Michael The Lion - Most Known Edits

My latest EP of edits under the Michael The Lion moniker are now available from London-based Giant Cuts Records. This vinyl-only release features four tunes which kind of showcase my MO - sampled grooves and lots of my own live instrumentation and percussion. Some of these tunes you may recognize from my live sets from over the years - strictly dancefloor jams - keepin it funky and uplifting as best I can!

Very flattered to have been asked to put these out. I never really intended Michael The Lion to be a project that was edit-oriented (stay tuned for more originals coming soon) but I'm very happy that amazing edit-oriented labels like Razor-N-Tape and now Giant Cuts have graciously put up their hard-earned money to press my tunes. No better feeling than holding a record of your jams in your hands.

Michael The Lion Edits Out Now On Razor-N-Tape

The major labels couldn't back up the presses forever - the Michael The Lion Edits are now available on 12" wherever fine records are sold! This record has a little bit of everything. Any Time is an edit of a loft classic that I did almost five years ago (as DJ Apt One). The Don is an italo/eurodisco joint reminiscent of my RCMP days. Get More is my multi-instrumental hard disco-funk take on a Philly classic (I play 4 guitar lines on it). Lastly 909s And Herb is a little collabo with my man 50 grand Sammy Bananas that has turned into a secret heater in Soul Clap's recent sets. Very excited and very honored to be a part of this label - which boasts a roster of top class editors like Dimitri From Paris, Ron Basejam and DJ Vas. High Steppin

Another very strong edit from the Pied Piper.  This is one of my favorite hard hitting productions from Barry White's Love Unlimited Orchestra.  Same nasty groove that made LUO a favorite for early 90's rap producers like the Beatminerz and Pharoahe Monch.  PP is one of the more prolific editors out there, so get familiar.

Sophisticated Cissy (DJ Apt One Edit)

This is a private stock edit I have been playing for years. The dudes from SF/LA/NYC crew MOM DJs convinced me to put it on their MOM Remixes Vol. 3, and some of the companion edits I have made will soon follow.  The Motown on Mondays dudes always put it down solid, so check them out at their events around the country.

Bobby Busnach 1980 Tape Edits

Boston's Bobby Busnach recently ripped and posted a 1980 reel-to-reel, cut-and-splice tape edit of the canonical Loleatta Holloway classic Love Sensation, recently transferred to digital format.  Check that and his long-burning cut-and-splice edit of the always amazing Eddie Kendricks jam Girl You Need A Change of Mind.

The Sound of Steve1der

One of my main man Angelinos Steve1der hit me up this week with a track he knew that I, as a Philly cat, would enjoy.  Steve doesn't tend to talk sideways so I knew he wasn't lying.

This is a graceful, break-beat laced version of the MFSB classic that most will remember as the theme to Soul Train (RIP Don Cornelius).  Whereas the OG version is a lush, string-driven track that evokes the sensibilities of the era, this one adds funky percussion giving it a sort of 1990s breakbeat feeling.

Any way you call it, it's a fuckin jam and you bet it will work on the dancefloor.

You can expect nothing but rare grooves & quality edits from Underdog, and this is no exception. BlackSmoke's vocalists are a force to be reckoned with. Fortunately for us, Underdog managed to squeeze a couple more joyful minutes out of the track.
