Cute Randomness

Grandma and Grandpa Southwick Come to Visit

We are always excited when Grandma and Grandpa Southwick come to visit! We had a blast going to the Olive Garden, playing at the park and going to the zoo. Thanks for all your thoughtfulness!

I didn't get a lot of pictures but I'm grateful Grandpa Southwick did! I will add them to the post when he sends me some.

Kara's Story

Kara was born July 26th 2010. She was almost born on the 23rd, though...

My doctor told me at the very beginning of my pregnancy that he would probably start me a week early as long as everything went ok. I was so glad! I have a problem with dilating and looked forward to getting the meds needed to start me sooner rather than later.

When 39 weeks came my doctor went out of town! I was so bummed. By this time I was having contractions every 2-4 minutes for about a a week and a half but since I wasn't dilating they wouldn't start me. My doctor got back the Friday of my 39th week. I was so excited! I went into the doctor for my weekly check up and expected him to send me right over to the hospital. Unfortunately he was already at the hospital doing 3 C-sections so I had to see a nurse. I was still only dialated to a 2 but I told the nurse that they needed to start me soon as my contractions were really bad. They tried to contact the doctor but he was still in surgery. So we hung around town--went to get some ice cream--and then stayed at the doctor's office until they could get a hold of him. He finally came back to the office and told us that he had to head out of town again in a couple of hours so there was no way he could take care of me today. I would have to wait until Monday.

The 24th of July was the most uncomfortable I have ever spent. It was a bummer because Dan had his family reunion and we couldn't go because I was so close to having the baby. So instead we went to my family's 24th breakfast. It was fun for Dan and Lily but I spent most of my time trying to get comfortable in the hammock.

Monday morning at 6am I called the hospital to see what time I could go in to have the baby. The doctor had told me on Friday that there were 5 people before so I may have to wait quite awhile. When I called the hospital they said I could be there at 7:15 am!! We rushed Lily to my parent's house and headed to the hospital. I don't remember when I have been so excited (probably not since they started Lily).

They gave me the pitocen at 8:30 am and the epidural (I was so tired of the last 2.5 weeks of pain that I was dreaming about the epidural!) at 8:40 am. Kara was born at 11:53 am. She weighed 7 lbs 15 oz and was 20 inches long.

NICU nurses immediately took her after she was born to such the meconium out of her lungs. They determined that it would be best to have her in the NICU for a bit.
She ended up staying for 3 days while they tried to figure out what was wrong with her lungs. We ended up bringing her home on oxygen for a week.

A lot of Dan's family came to visit us at the hospital on the way home from the family reunion. How grateful we were to be able to see them! We hadn't seen Dan's sister in 2 years since she lives back east so we were so glad they were able to stop by. None of the pictures I took turned out Southwicks! Sorry! But thanks so much for coming!

Lily was so sad she couldn't see Kara right away! She could only see her through the NICU window. She kept telling Dan and anyone who would listen "I just want to pet her." The picture above shows Lily sitting below the NICU window eating a rice krispy treat right before we were able to take Kara home. When we opened the door to the NICU to bring her into the waiting room, Lily ran in and said really loud "I just want to hold her!" The nurses thought she was so cute!

We are sure happy to have her! Lily just loves being a big sister and only covers her ears every once in awhile when Kara screams too loud. How blessed we are to have two healthy little girls!
