Dipping My Toes in Video Gaming World

I have been watching the gaming world as an outsider, all my life. My wide-eyed moment was in 2011 when I saw a Games store in mall and big posters about Gaming awards. I was stunned - so gaming is a parallel world - like cinema, TV and so on !

Now that my kids are full on into it, I was very curious. I mean, my kids played games like their peers. At one point, as any parent, I considered Gaming as a big bad place for kids, so I had rules in place. Then came short videos/reels/shorts, and kids were spending unlimited time there. Heck even I was addicted, spending 6 continuous hours watching non-stops short videos. Upon realization I started coaxing kids to play video games. (See how the cookie crumbles - said my kids looks).

For last years Black Friday, I bought XBox for myself. To step into the world of Video Games. It was almost Valentines day, by when I connected the Xbox and switched it on. By "I", I mean my kids, cause they couldn't stand it anymore ! That a perfectly good equipment was gathering dust..

I also did a round of Gaming Arcade along with my kids & nephews. The Gen Z is the most caring of all generations. They taught me the steps, rules and looped me in their world - no judgements for a noob. Pinballs in arcade were nostalgia overload, though I don't remember if I played the real one in past or only digitals ones on the old keyboard and large box monitors. And Pac-man are so additive - I want one home console now to play Pac-man non-stop.

Arcade is how I learnt the basics of gaming - games get faster with time, more balls etc on next level and the basics of scoring. Some experience in steering and controller functions in driving games coz those are way different from real-world car driving. Anyway, those were the best few hours in spring break.

Tetris book was another nostalgia overload. With the books thriller pace, it made me want to play again. Google search showed a paid version on Xbox. And they have a mobile version too. Quick download, few games & deleted it. The unpaid one had ads ofcourse. Then it was in COLOR ! And the phone screen made it different. The experience was totally different. During the peak years, I used to even dream of those B&W bricks in my sleep. And here these are in color. And that it dawned on me, Candy crush is a version of Tetris - arghhhhh what a let down. Thankfully Amazon still sells the handheld version and I need to get my hands on them soon.

The ads in free games are such a nuisance. Now I feel bad for all the years, kids had borrowed parents phone and waded through ads, to play nonsense games. It doesn't mean I am a convert & will start paying everywhere for games. Just saying, I now know the pain.

Back to X-Box, how I fell in love was when my kids & nephews let me handle the BMX game. That was my initiation to the sensitive controller and how things are not as easy as it looks. In the meantime, I have graduated to car-football game () and floppy-jumping game. I am yet to enter the world of Fortnite or any multiple-player games.

With my past experience being limited to Tetris and Minesweeper, I decided to read up on games before I started. I got hold of many books, but eventually finished these.

Press Start to Play - Short story collection

Wide variety of short stories. Lot of them sci-fi and some in twilight horror category.
Notable ones - Andy Wiers, Anda's Game by Cory Doctorow.

The Tetris Effect - The Game That Digitized The World - Dan Ackerman

Got to see the Tetris movie released recently. Book was better. I mean, the movie is thriller format with lot of physical action. Same events & situations happen in the book but in a realistic fashion; and yet they were no less thrilling.

Covers a lot on how software business deals happened, atleast in 80s & 90s. Communication might be faster now ofcourse, but people dynamics still are the same. One book about current s/w business world was in the Instagram book. Other insights were about the beliefs and philosophy of the coding world - about the passion for free nature of open code and it becomes a sin when its popular, sharing via floppy disks and 80s & older models of desktops.

Movies

Might I add some movie recommendations as well.

Ready Play One - 2018 movie, based off of 2011 book, I read in 2016, set in dystopian future 2045 but totally living in the 1980s.

1Up - 2022 movie, small budget but well made.

Roadtrip - Packing List 101

My updated Roadtrip - Packing List 101. Which is different from Camping or Theme Park or Air-travel. These are essential items. You anyway need other regular use stuff.

Factors for this list:

  1. Breakfast, lunch & snacks could be covered by many drive-throughs. But one meal needs to be home-cooked. Its not just financial, it's also gut-driven decision.
  2. Meals in the Park - So if you are in a city or even village, you can step out to buy some lunch. Even that takes away 2-3 hours sometimes. But if you are going to park, there is no other option but to pack your lunch. There is no question of skipping it, coz you need to consider how long you can suffer, till you breakdown. I mean you will have to stay in the park till nightfall at worst case. And stepping out 50 miles for a meal is not worth it.
  3. Cooler - to store yogurt cups, frozen peas or frozen parathas
  4. Pack or shop what you left behind. Not all states have frequency of Targets & Walmart as your state. You might find local grocery stores for the staple items. But it could be few & far in between. Until then rely on gas-stations & their inventory.
  5. Overnight bag - so packing might involve separate bags for each family member. But if you are going to move from hotel to hotel for night-stays, you need a overnight bag. Be flexible to move stuff around to one bag with only overnight supplies. That will reduce the headache of lugging multiple luggage to the room after a tired day of driving and getting them back to car again next morning.
  6. Cold weather layering - need the hoodies & winter jackets. No matter how south, and which month; it's gonna be windy or cold and we end up needing some of those.

Clothing

  1. Winter Jackets - coz no matter which month of the year and any corner of the country - its going to be cold or windy at best.
  2. Gloves - for the same above reason.
  3. Hoodies - coz maybe its not bitter cold, but its still cold.
  4. Socks - you need clean ones after wading through sand.
  5. Swim bag with all the paraphernalia - to utilize the hotel pool

Grocery/Ingredients list

  1. Rice - count the cups based on people & nights to feed. And add more cups to that.
  2. Dal (Moong/Toor)
  3. Pickle bottle
  4. Turmeric, Chilli powder & Salt in zip-locks
  5. Jeera in ziplock
  6. Ghee / oil - small bottle
  7. MTR Puliyogyre paste
  8. MTR Bisibelebath paste
  9. Maggi
  10. Fruits, bread, jams, chips - shop along the way as you need.
  11. Yogurt - shop along the way as you need.
  12. Crate of water bottles - buy more every gas station

Cooking & Serving kit

  1. Rice cooker
  2. InstaPot - 3 qt
  3. Cooler - small one will do
  4. Griddle - lightweight for Paratha. Or can also be bought at the nearest Walmart/Target/etc
  5. Paper plates, cups, spoons, forks (for Maggi)
  6. Ketchup packets collected every drive-through
  7. Tissue roll

Recipes

  1. Peas-Rice
  2. Dal
  3. Frozen Parathas
  4. Puliyogyre - White rice (w/ peas) mixed with MTR Puliyogyre paste
  5. Bisibelebath - White rice & dal with peas mixed with MTR Bisibelebath paste
  6. Maggi
  7. PBJ - Peanut Butter Jelly Sandwiches

Toiletries kit or Shaving Kit

  1. Nail-cutter - someone in your large party is going to need it someday; for sure.
  2. Travel size shampoo, conditioner, soap - coz all hotels can't be trusted to have the right one
  3. Medicines - Volini (for leg pain), Disprin (for headaches), Aquapor (for skin)
  4. Rest you know

Others

  1. Book bag - with book, book-light, pencil-case. A kids joke-book that I took, was a hit for all of us.
  2. Neck-pillow - how can it not be part of a car !
  3. Marker pen - to add name initials on  the disposable water-bottle cap, so we don't drink each others backwash - argh. And hence we don't discard perfectly good water, because we forgot whose is which. Ofcourse such water can be used to wash hands & such.
  4. Scissor or cutter - coz someone need it someday.

Running Fuel

On the topic of nutrition for a long run, a whole lot of articles have been written in detail. I don't want to copy-paste any, so have the links in below section.

Here I will just summarize the points which I would usually say verbally to anyone in concise manner. But reading about fueling, is very good for the understanding this concept and then come up with your own solution for your long runs.

Any run beyond 1 hour means blood sugar/glucose is exhausted and you are running on empty tank. Since the wheels are still rolling you don't notice. And then suddenly legs and brain come to a stand still and you wonder what happened ? Sheer will-power will get you only so far. This is the reason to eat up something before that 1 hour is up. And then every 30-40 minutes.

And that something is at least 200 calories with sufficient carbs in it.

If you run in loops, then leave the food/nutrition with water at your rest stop. If its a no-repeat trail, then many belts & backpacks are available to carry nutrition with you.

Nutrition choices are enormous. It can be locally available fruits (banana, figs, dates, candied pineapple, Agra petha) and/or processed options (Clif bars, Gu, beans, gels, electrolyte/Gaterade/Powerade).

Getting an electrolyte drink along with water is crucial. It will refill the electrolyte lost in sweat. And it will help body absorb the plain water you are drinking.

The glucose-dense food will quickly nourish, after the stores are exhausted after 1 hr run. They give the jump needed to go the extra mile.
The main tip here is, to remember to refill before your body exhaust. Cause the newly ingested food will take sometime to kick in.

This covers for runs which last longer than an hour.
If your intention for running is weight-loss, then these food items are not the ones you want to skip. You can skip carbs from some other meal. But you need these run-nutrition, simply to finish your long runs in good shape and mood.
For short runs, lasting below 1 hours, there is no need to indulge in these supplementary foods (candies really).

Steps to Yoga Addiction

How to go from 0 to feeling-like-an-expert type in Yoga.

To begin with, as a non yogi, all your life, feel left out or inept when the neighbourhood aunty says she can touch her toes or when told the legend that Rekha & Dr Raj Kumar owe their suppleness and health to Yoga.

Take the first step and do yoga along with a Youtube video. Here is the tiny video which is sold as stretches, but is actually is a gem collection of key poses.

If you are still unsure about joining others, then start doing more in your own privacy. But first get new gear - comfy yoga pants and the all important, colorful Yoga mat. Blocks & Straps are good too. But if not ready to invest in one, then make your own with left-out straps and folded towels.

Next thing for DIY Yoga - are the videos. There are loads of channels to follow on Youtube.
Just take your time out, lock yourself in a room with a large display screen for the Yoga videos. With a calming background music, step by step instructions, these are the best to work out a session with.
  1. Psyche Truth
  2. Yoga With Adriene
  3. Soft Music & Yoga ~ Yoga Yak
  4. Shilpa's Yoga

Now that you are comfortable doing Yoga by yourself, it's time to get out there, do it with others, I mean in a Group. Whether it's a group class in your generic fitness gym or a Yoga specific studio. It doesn't hurt much or cost much, to try out a few weekly sessions.

I can guarantee you, by week 4, you will proficient in knowing what is cat pose ? How different is it from cow pose ? The dog pose, cobra, warrior, even Vinyassa.

It's admirable how the Yoga instructors calmly lead us through each step. And given the finite number of poses, they structure every class different from the other to keep challenging muscle memory. That alone is enough to make us come back for more.

That and the last 5 minutes of Shavasana. Nothing can beat that.

Pre-Bedtime Bored Jar

Week day evenings are so chaotic. There is this rush to cook, feed, eat and packup so we can go to bed as soon as possible. But because we parents are so busy with these main chores, week after week go away and we spend a small % of the day doing some quality stuff with the kids.

I truly like the idea of Bored Jar. Here is my tailored version, for those Weekday evenings. This will help me when my brain can't step away from the chores to think of some short activity with kids. These things are lying around neatly organised. All kids need is something interesting to get started and then they are off doing more by them-self.

Arsenal for Kids studytime

My arsenal for kids homework. It make kids homework time , a lot more fun - for Parents ! And this is focused on Pre-K, K and 1st grade kids.

Half the time, kids give ideas on how to use the same-old tool in different way. Nothing can beat our jaded brains than the freshly minted creativity of a kids.
And the other half-time, I rely on homeschool blogs. They have done so much hard work and shared their knowledge. Hats off to those home-schooling parents.

What better tools to learn new words than flash cards, magnetic letters or Scrabble letters and Marker pens.

Here I enclosed Read-Build-Write printouts in plastic.

Eventually practice with spelling tests.
Name-Place-animal-Things game - nostalgic and awesome tool for all round development of language. Older kids have to brain-storm through their data mine and achieve speed. But younger kids can hunt the right word on maps or books and write the entries. that will build their database.

Number grid - the most powerful tool of all. Can teach a variety of things - like count by 2,3,4,5,10; additions, subtractions. Because seriously, how many times can you write these things, over and over again ? And how will it reveal the stuff between the lines ?
By using it like a board games - that's how !
So we used:
  1. 2 players
  2. pair of dice (pink ones at that)
  3. printed number grid
  4. Barbie shoes for keys
And practice additions, subtractions & mystery numbers with pebbles, toy-cars and other small objects.

    Pregnancy & Delivery

When I went through pregnancy and new motherhood , every single moment was a learning experience. I wanted to share and document those profound instances. I was sure I would write a book on it. And with passing time, I hoped to atleast blog some of them in a series of posts. Eventually they were limited to discussions, with others who were in the same boat and those were going to ride one soon. Before all my knowledge evaporates in the heat of daily fire, I need to log them in any manner, in any size post.

Every woman has a very different experience and new things can be learnt from each woman. There are so many things common, it makes sense to do what others did, rather than spend energy inventing the wheel. The best woman to start with is, your own mother. Talk to her about how pregnancy and delivery went for her. Genetics plays an unimaginable role. Your own experience could be a variation of it, because you are your own person and technology has totally changed in the last few decades. But it’s a great starting point to learn. If I were to share my learning's with you here it is.

    Pregnancy and Delivery

Maternity clothes do need attention. Loose or non-constricting clothes do matter. In the country of saree & salwar suit, I wished they would categorize nightie as office professional wear. This was before I discovered Maxi. Not to forget comfy underwear, nursing bras and front opening nighties. Buy them in bigger size, because the privates are going to be bigger than usual for the 2 trimesters plus the baby-feeding months.

If you are considering new house, ensure hospital, grocery, laundry and elevator are nearby. If not, then know the easiest routes to those important places,

The wait in the last month is just endless. Do maintain your body flexibility. Go for walks when you can. Do checkout the permitted exercises. Ex: being on your fours (palms and knees) is good, as it takes the pressure off back. There are a lot more safe Yoga exercises.

I drank lukewarm water during the winter months, as I was down with cold and during the last month. I do not have any scientific evidence, but it relaxed my insides.

Swollen feet is a painful problem. Maybe it’s unavoidable in the last 2 months. It gets fine immediately after delivery. But it’s best to push it’s onset as late as possible. I went on overnight bus journey in my 5th month and my feet ballooned up. It made walking painful. Bones in my own feet felt like pins on my cushiony feet muscles. I used to rest my feet on 3-4 pillows while in bed; so the bloating could flow down. Or soak in in a bucket of hot water with salt.

Back pain is something we should strive to avoid. Eventually in pregnancy, back distress is going to come up. After delivery, take bed rest for the whole 2 months. Stay home with kid for 2 months. Sleep when she sleeps. Don’t do any extra work for the 2 months. After that anyway there is endless work. These 2 months of rest will let your back and body repair, and become stronger. It will also help avoid back-pain in older age. Such 2 months of bed-rest sounds like a luxury of ladies who can afford maternity leave or those who have help at home. Ladies who need to get back to work soon, those with older kids or someone who needs daycare will find it impossible to take this kind of downtime. It’s only a guideline to give your body some well-deserved rest for a stretch of time immediately after delivery. Body has been through a major change for 9 months and a major upheaval during delivery. Since everything looks the same from outside and everyday someone delivers a kid or because memory of our own experience has faded, it’s easy to under-estimate the whole thing. But it is not something to kid about. Blessed are the countries who have implemented ‘Right to Payment while on Maternity Leave’ policies. A mother gives birth not just for her own motivations. New life brings new hope for the entire society.

Topic of Epidural is way more complicated than to be tackled in a blog post. It’s best to discuss it with Doctor. My personal experience - I did not receive any epidural as my kids arrived before their due date. One thing I would recommend is HOT shower when contractions start mildly. I took HOT shower, changed to nightie and left for hospital. That hot shower helps in body relaxation.

My kids were born way before date. It was amazing time. I followed the “What to Expect when Expecting” book and was sure the delivery would be on the exact date. I refused to believe that what I felt were contractions, because the book did talk about false alarm. I refused to go hospital to avoid any embarrassment of being sent back. I stayed home till I actually started screaming loudly without any care. And then it was a rush to hospital. Hubby drove and he stopped the car every single time I strong contraction came along; because the road bumps were added discomfort for me.

With this surprise, I did not have a Hospital bag ready. Hubby had to go back and forth a lot to get my stuff - toothbrush, camera, few clothes for the time of stay. Hospitals do give a lot of stuff like diaper, thermometer, etc. So check with yours. Afterwards for home you will need diapers, sanitary napkins, breast-pads, nursing bras, etc.

Another preparation you need, is to stockup on the post-partum nutrition. Traditionally in India, a lot of energy balls (laddoos) are made to provide energy and aid digestion (which is pretty messed up in a new mother). My Mom made them and kept it going for 2 months. I did not note their recipes. My MIL made Jirvani and Meva ka laddoo. USA equivalent of it are the good quality energy bars, snacks, dry and fresh fruits. Its good to stockup on those. Immediately after delivery, you might get hungry at midnight too. This is apart from your regular meals. Every morning, my MIL gave me a glass of warm milk mixed with sugar, turmeric, cashew, raisins, almonds & coconut flakes. Key thing being items high on nutrition and energy.

Don’t worry about weight. After delivery, you keep losing weight for next 5-6 months. Actual weight gain will happen around 8-12 months. Persistent late nights, odd hours snacking and out-of-control emotions upset any decent control we have on our food and exercise. You have nothing to worry till 6-8 months after delivery. Just relax and enjoy your time with baby!

    New Mother

In this chaos and elation of delivery, all undesirable thoughts get pushed away. We might refuse to believe anything bad exists in the universe or refuse to see it at all. This is the situation when we may write away cheques to relatives or friends looking for loan and regret later. This is the time we might choose not to take baby studio pictures and regret having missed the moment. In this moment of elation, we may give away our choice of name, middle name or last name, and later wish we did not. Sometimes this life event may get timed along with other life events like a job change, new house,  country movement, higher education or financial status change either-way. Life will have its other ups and downs.

In hindsight, all this may seem funny. But this range of event , combined together in this happy stage of life, could bump up the pressure, shoot up the stress level and really overwhelm both parents. And that means, not to be shy or frugal about taking help. Those who said "it takes a village.." were not kidding.

Here are some of my learning's, which I usually talk about in person. So here it goes:

IGNORE the pressure & guilt that comes with motherhood. Just focus on the baby & related responsibilities. Everything else can come back on track gradually, after baby is 2-3 years.

Pressure: like societal pressure of how mother should be, how to look, how the baby should look or be taken care of, etc etc. In movies & popular culture, they show all lovey-dovey mother & infants. It is not always like that. It is okay if you are not all gushing with love after delivery. And that is because your physical & chemical changes are way too much. Its okay for others in the family, to fawn over baby for that month or so, while you cant.

Guilt: that anything happens, its mothers fault. You do this,  mother is wrong. You do that, mother is wrong. Every tiny thing is scrutinized and judgement passed by every moving ant.

A sample of how I felt - here.

Basically relax and handle the job at hand. All this pressure & guilt are useless. Because there is never a right answer; just immense choices.

Next step, network with other young mothers. The more you all talk, the more tips you get on how to handle certain things. It lets you let off some steam. Its always helpful. Usual group dynamics will be there. You may not like some of the ladies. But it's always better than being by yourself. No matter who the lady (your circle, your distant relative, colleges, their wife, anyone), just talk, talk & talk :) We learn from others experiences, other learn from ours. Its not possible to invent solution every single time. When baby throws up, or doesn't drink milk from bottle or so many other situations. Talking with other young mothers gives you tips, which you can't think up, in the heat of situation. Esp when the infant is crying, my brain just shuts down. Only thing which helps me is what my mom or other mothers that I know, did in a similar situation.

Be one step ahead. Babies cry only if they hungry or sleepy or tired or need diaper change. If those things are taken care of in advance, then they cry less. Even now that my kids are 4-7, anytime they look cranky, I drop everything else and make them eat or sleep. :D

Then there will be times, when they cry for no reason. Esp when we are in hurry or in some embarrassing situation (like a shop or plane or restaurant). Our brain will freeze. But can’t help it. Just be patient. Its okay if they cry. Everybody around us know kids cry, even they would have gone through it.

About messy house, oh kids house & single/bachelor house are totally different. Its fine to have a messy house - that's how a kids house is supposed to be. Things are not going to be in their place. Take help when needed - cleaners, babysitter, anybody.

Setup playdates. Even young infants like to be among people, to see the blue sky. Isolation is very unhealthy. Be among people.

There is lot of online help. So many mommy-blogs where they share their experience. Babycenter site send weekly mail, which is a blessing. I registered for both of mine. And I still get these mails. It always has accurate info for the kid, at that age in that week. More specialized online training must also help. There are so much overwhelming feelings, there are so many physical, chemical and schedule changes after baby, that unpredictable things can happen.

After few months, even if you don't have free time, indulge in a hobby. Online activity does not count. Write a diary, or train for some competition (photography, art, music, flash-mob dance, race, anything). Join any association which has some activities. Bring your old forgotten hobbies back.

Be ready to take a million photos of the toothless mouth smiling & laughing. It is the cutest, most beautiful thing in the whole world ! :)

Pregnancy, delivery and new motherhood are a building block of every society and also the most taken for granted ones. Those going through it will have their minds blown (and other parts too). Eventually the pain and experience dims. And it enriches us along the the way.

How to get started with Running - 101

I started running in this year and here is all that I learnt in 2014.

    1. There is lot of material on running on the internet. And a great place to start is about.com.
    2. And here is the great glossary for the running catchwords: http://greatist.com/fitness/ultimate-guide-running-lingo

    3. Training plans:

    4. Once you start running, it makes sense to fix a goal and train for it. Every running site provides it own training plan and guidance, for free or fee. Here is one I used. It has a variety from Couch to 5K to 10K to Half and then Marathan. http://www.coolrunning.com/engine/2/2_3/181.shtml
    5. Hal Higdon - Marathon Training Guide - Novice 2
    6. In general all training plans suggest workout for 4-5 days a week, with other days being rest days. And if you want to up your level, target a weekly increase by 10%. So the guideline is always your own capacity.
    7. Many runners and running websites have created Facebook pages. They are great to follow for daily dose of Motivation, Inspiration and Information. Just create a Running interest page on facebook and add them. It won't clutter your regular newsfeed. On a mobile device, I find this a very powerful tool.
    8.

      Stretching:

    9. If you plan to run 2-3 times in a  month, then not-stretching is not an issue. But if you want to run the day-after as well, its better you stretch before and after every run. Otherwise the shin pain, maybe hip pain won't let you go again. And that is discouraging. Stretching videos I would recommend:

      Cross-training:

    10. Practically every training plan accounts for rest days. And those are the days to cross-train. Chose your favorite. Here is a list to help you with that: http://www.runnersworld.com/photos/16-cross-training-activities-to-try

    11. Run gear:

    12. Once running catches up, nothing can stop from spurlging on the running gear.
    13. Fit: Its better to have comfort fit shirts & pants. That good old image of loose cotton t-shirts and slack pants are best left out. All those loose clothing will flop over our head in case of yoga and provide added resistance incase of running. No use.
    14. And cotton is a sin, go for wick-dry stuff. See next section for details. I haven't run in summer yet, but I plan to use wick-dry, 1 layer with shortest possible sleeve.
    15. Yoga mat - awesome for stretching or doing shavaasan (i.e. legit way to nap; just don't snore). Links: Flipkart, Amazon
    16. Sport bra for ladies. Stock up on those and get the right match. Guys use bandaid I think, if they need really really long run. I won't write the details, please google.
    17. Rash cream - for chaffing that will happen after you try anything new (new speed or distance or new clothes or shoes)
    18. Chapstick or lip-balm
    19. Hankerchief or Kleenex - for the snot
    20. Phone, ipod, water bottle - depending on your needs.
    21. Shoes - this shouldn't be the last in the list, but .... Get running shoe which fit correctly, maybe with a gap in the front. Try out a run in the store. And it needs replacement every 300-400 miles in general.

    22. Winter running gear:

    23. This video is the best resource I could find about the right clothing for cold weather running or snow running: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8eC5toC0vms

    25. Here is the list for running in sub 30F weather:
      • Tech shirts - Layering tech shirts is very useful. In sub-30F, 2-3 shirts and in sub-10F, 3-4 shirts will be needed. What is different about tech shirts, is that they are made of synthetic material and designed to wick the sweat away from your skin. If the cloth touching you skin is wet, pretty soon it will freeze up and frostbite that area of your body. On those lines, cotton is sin in cold weather running. Because cotton absorbs the moisture and keeps it there. So always look for "wick dry". (Target Tech t-shirts)
      • Wind-sheeter jacket - to stop wind from entering inside and cooling your core.
      • Compression tights - those pants are a blessing to run outside in temps below 60F
      • Neck gaiter - protects neck from cold wind. Also from breathing in that freezing air.
      • Cap
      • Chapstick or lipbalm
      • Here is my updated list in new blog post.

      Summer Running tips:

    26. I totally love the outdoor runs in spring & fall; even winter. Its summer that I am scared of. The increased heat can tire us easily. Cloth choice should be using current temp + 10F as guideline. Water & electrolyte replacement is important. So is the time of day and location of run.
    27. Both the below articles are very useful giving details to all these choices. Do read through them before start the summer runs.

    28. Running in Rain:

    29. 10 Tips for Running in the Rain - How to Dress for Wet Weather Runs

    30. Race info:

    31. Race is such a moral-booster to participate in a race. Numerous website maintain the schedule location-wise. Find one for your location:

  1. Race day gear should be as per the weather of the race day. Be prepared for all variations (like heat & rain on the same morning), coz it can be very unpredictable.
  2. Likewise, ensure your cheering squad is dressed for the day. They may have to wait out in the open, exposed to all elements. So they should not forget their umbrellas, wind-jackets, caps and more.

  3. Nutrition:

  4. General rule is to have some nutrition if the run is last more than 1 hour. And then every 30-40 minutes. This will help sustain the run and not hit a wall, which pretty much makes us give-up on the long run.
  5. If you run in loops, then leave the food/nutrition with water at your rest stop. If its a no-repeat trail, numerous belts & backpaks are available to carry nutrition with you.
  6. Nutrition choices are enormous. It can be locally available fruits (banana, figs, dates) and processed options (clif bars, Gu, beans, gels, electrolyte/gaterade/powerade).
  7. The glucose-dense food will quickly nourish after the stores exhausted after 1 hr run. They gives the jump needed to go the extra mile.
  8. Long Distance Nutrition Planning

  9. Breathing & Posture:

  10. Breathing: Inhale thru nose & exhale via mouth. Beginner tendency is to breathe from mouth. In the long run, it dries up the mouth & throat. So practice to inhale via nose & exhale via mouth.
  11. Breathing: The recommended way to breathe is from diaphragm, and not just inflating chest. So the trick, is to tummy-out when inhale and tummy-in when exhale. This needs practice in 3 steps - in daily life, while practice runs and then graduating to when hard runs.
  12. Breathe Like A Pro
  13. The Simple Technique That Will Help You Run Longer
  14. Running form - in simple terms
  15. And then there are whole lot of instructions about body posture. Numerous bloggers & run magazine write about them regularly. Here is a helpful pictorial:

  16. Other tips:

  17. While running watch the horizon. Not on the ground or sky. Helps keep the focus. In winter, snow or black ice made me watch the ground a lot and as much I loved the crunch of snow, in spring I realize it's so much freeing now to look away from ground.
  18. Mucous generation increases. So carry tissue or hankie to clear nose when needed.
