November 2015-the Box Month

Somehow I can't find any pictures of Thanksgiving, but I recall we had it with my Aunt Dede and Uncle Chan, as well as a friend named Mark that we know from church.  I know I have a picture somewhere, but I did find some other awfully good pictures.

First, here is Hannah in a cute Halloween skirt made for her by Grandma T.

We have a picture from a few years ago of either Sam or Thomas with their head in a box.  The next few pictures are an attempt by Thomas and Hannah to reenact that.

Thomas's first lost tooth!

Hannah in a different box (Thomas' treasure box).

And now Hannah in another box.

Oh, look, Hannah made a box to sit in out of the stool turned upside-down.

Leaves, leaves, leaves, and more leaves.  This was just the back-yard!  We have one less tree this year.

And, surprise, Hannah is in a box!  (With a giant bag of craisins.)  All of these box pictures were from the month of November.  I guess she had a thing for boxes that month!

October 2015

Last October's Halloween Festivities.  Hopefully you can tell what they are, but Thomas went with the fireman costume, Hannah was a lady-bug, and Sam was a ghost.

We took these pictures on a Saturday night close to Halloween.  I found out that there was a free Halloween event at the YMCA so we decided to get costumed and go!  The boys were excited, Hannah was confused but willing to go along, and I was excited.  Dave was gone...out of town maybe?  I can't remember now.  Anyway, we got dressed, face-painted, took pictures, and got in the car.  Then we drove 15 minutes to the YMCA!  Then we wondered why it looked dark and the parking lot was empty.  Uh oh.  Turns out I mis-read the information.  The Halloween event had be the night BEFORE!  So we got donuts instead!  And actually it was good we got pictures on this night because we didn't get any on Halloween night. :)

 Pumpkin guts are always gross!

The finished products!  (Sam didn't want to be seen for some reason.)

Mackinac (pronounced Mackinaw) Island

Last October my friend Paula told me she and her family were going to Mackinac Island, so naturally I invited myself and my family to join them.  She graciously accepted the self-invitation.  Then again, they had to cancel in the end, but I'm pretty convinced it's not because of me.  Anyway, we went to Mackinac Island, and I'm so glad we did.  It was our first trip "up north" as Michiganders call that part of the state.  We stayed in Mackinaw City and caught the ferry over to the island.  It was lovely!  While we waited for the ferry we entertained ourselves by trying to make facial expressions to match feelings I named.  I can't remember what feelings I named that elicited these faces.  They bring to mind "overjoyed" and "up to no good".  Ok, that last one isn't a feeling, but that's what comes to mind. :)

It's fun when they learn to smile for the camera.  Here's Hannah on the ferry boat.  I should probably apologize now to teenage Hannah for my lack of understanding of what to do with little-girl hair.

We rented bikes and biked around the island.  Dave was heroic and pulled Thomas and Hannah (screaming half the time) in a trailer. Sam rode his own bike.  I think it's 8 miles around the island.  Pretty good for a 7 year old! We stopped to take a break and climb up to a scenic overlook, pictured below.  There were many stairs to climb.  I loved this picture of Hannah and Dave ascending the stairs together.

We made it to the top!

Scenic overlook.  Was it worth all those stairs?  Maybe.

We couldn't resist the chocolate and fudge that was everywhere on Mackinac Island.  If you ask the boys, candy apples are a right, not a privilege.  They really were delicious.

I threw this one in for kicks and giggles.  Thomas is making some facial expression that I can't put into words (if you can, feel free to leave a comment), and Sam is too busy eating to be bothered with pictures.

August/September 2015-Visits!

This post is just about regular life, plus some fun visits from family. Here's one of my favorites of Hannah in the bath.

Sam and his beloved legos!

Thomas and his beloved legos!

One of the great things about living here is that we live an hour and a half from my Aunt and Uncle.  They are always giving us good ideas of things to do in the area.  And another perk is that when Heidi visits them, she visits us too!  Last summer Heidi and Jason visited us for a couple of days.

Here are Jason, Sam, and Thomas at their best.

Hannah being Hannah...cute!

It's funny because Heidi actually just visited us this year too, and Hannah was quite taken with her.  I guess she was just as taken with her last year.

My Dad at the Henry Ford Museum.

Soon after Heidi's visit my parents came.  I think these two are the only pictures I got while they were here!  I'll have to do better next time.  Sam really enjoyed helping my dad with some projects.  I have fond memories of tagging along with my dad as he did projects around our house growing up.

July 2015-Ezra

Ok, this one is pretty heavy, and personal.

On the last couple of days at Oak Cove I had left my phone in the car and didn't check it or charge it.  I figured I was on vacation, and really, who ever calls me about anything important?

We returned home on July 5th, which was a Sunday.  Sometime in the late afternoon Dave got a phone call from my mom, asking to speak to me.  She had been calling my phone for the last day, but it was still dead.  I immediately knew this call wouldn't be good news.  She told me that Ezra, my nephew, had drowned in a pool on the 4th of July, and most likely wouldn't be able to revived.  She went on to explain the details and that there was still the chance that he could live, but it would take a miracle.  At that moment I knew he wasn't coming back to us--that he was gone.  Even as I write about it a year later, I still feel shocked.  It's hard to express the feelings that accompany an unexpected death, and I am definitely not able to do so adequately.  The only thing I can say is that my heart broke for my sister and her husband, and their two daughters.

I also felt grateful for the memories I have of Ezra.  We lived in California for all of his life, so we didn't see him often.  But we saw him when we visited Utah, which was at least once a year.  So I have impressions of him, that came with family get-togethers that included, but were not focused on him.  But I do have one very distinct memory for which I am very grateful.  A few months before Oak Cove we went to Utah for the wedding of my sister-in-law and her husband, Rachel and Lucas.  We stayed at Dave's parents house, like we always do, but this time I did something I don't normally do.  I took an afternoon by myself to go visit my family in Utah county.  It was time when I could give undivided attention to my family, without being distracted by my family (i.e. my kids).  I'm grateful to Dave for helping me take this chance.  Anyway, I remember Christy was out running errands, so I met her at Target.  She had her kids with her, and they were boisterous and excited to see me.  I was delighted and a little surprised because I figured they didn't really know me too well, so why would they be excited to see me?  But they are kids, and they were excited.  I remember Ava had lots to say to me.  Ezra didn't have quite as much to say, but he still was eager to tell me what was on his mind.  It was fun to just pay attention to them.  And they rode back to their house with me in my car.  It's a simple, uneventful memory, but it's special to me because it was just me and them.

I also remember when their family got a kitten...I think it was for Christmas the year before?  I think I remember Ezra just carrying that kitten around like it was a sack of potatoes, without any degree of gentleness at all.  As I recall, the kitten was tolerant, but not too eager to be picked up or even noticed by Ezra, in particular.

I also felt touched by the out-poring of kind thoughts and words and monetary donations from so many friends and acquaintances.  I was especially touched by friends of mine who reached out to my sister's family, whether financially or through a few words of sympathy, even though they don't know them personally.  I felt in awe of the goodness of people.

I am grateful that Dave, the kids, and I could all go to Utah for Ezra's funeral.  My faith was strengthened as Christy and Ryan bore powerful witness of their faith and assurance that God was with them and that Ezra is in good hands--His hands.  I don't know how to express my feelings, except that it was powerful, and I came away comforted.  It's not that the sadness was removed or replaced, but it was joined by feelings of faith and comfort in the promises of God.  I saw with my own eyes both the strength and humility of relying on God's grace.  It's my testimony that no matter what life brings, it's going to be ok because of His grace.

July 2015--Oak Cove

At the end of June/beginning of July 2015 we went with Dave's family to a delightful little place in west Michigan for a week of relaxation and fun.  It was nice and quiet and we didn't have to cook!

Duke composed a little song with a verse about each member of the family.  It was not to be forgotten. :)

A family picture is always a good idea.

I'd never played shuffleboard until this trip, but it was pretty fun.  Sam and Thomas were both pretty good at it!

Tetherball! Thomas beat himself every time!  (Sam is commenting that it's hard to play against an adult, but he was still good enough they didn't beat him right away.  So he still enjoyed it a little.)

Baby Duke and Hannah Mae.  An adorable duo.

It's hard to know what to do with a one-year-old's hair.  I'm sure there are many better solutions out there, but Hannah made do with the rhino horn.

Hannah and Grandma T.

Emma and Grandpa Duke looking out over the beach.  It really was a peaceful place.

We went to an air museum in...Kalamazoo?  Air museums aren't about air, by the way, they are about air vehicles--airplanes and rockets.  We got to go in a flight simulator which was probably the highlight.  I love this picture of Sam.  Sam also says he doesn't really remember taking this picture, or some parts of the museum.

Sam's 7th Birthday

I've decided to catch up, starting with Sam's 7th birthday in 2015.

Sam loves presents!
(And he loves giving them too!)

Dave always does a good job buying presents for the boys, and this birthday was no exception.

Sam's party was a firefighter theme.

We started with "Stop, Drop, and Roll" when the music stops.

There was also a game involving water balloons...

Firefighters have to catch pets that get thrown out the window!

And the fire-truck pinata.

Attendees were Ben, Nate, Jennifer, and Jacob.

CAKE!
