The pleasure of finding out about Feynman's pleasure of finding things out

My first impulse was to start with "Wonderful Feynman". Well, I changed my mind. Just Feynman!

I find it hard to describe the delight that watching Feynman talk brings to me. A strong and lively mind always clicking effortlessly at maximum speed, describing its contents and its own processes at the same time. Pure joy...

I find it infinitely better than many hours of teaching and equivalent to many hours of the deep pleasure that learning is...

Stephen Colbert Interviews Neil deGrasse Tyson at Montclair Kimberley Academy

A really enjoyable interview between two persons that are both brilliant and highly entertaining in whatever they do. Tyson also takes questions from the audience and answers all of them with his characteristic passion for science.

My advice is just go watch it and forget about the rest of this post. Still, just in case you' re not convinced yet, read on...

The english are very clear and no specific or deep scientific knowledge is required to enjoy it.

Unfortunately it only lasts for around 80 minutes... :-)

Some of the questions Stephen Colbert posed during a discussion that is informative, hilarious and just plain interesting all the way, include:

1. Is it better to know or not to know?
2. Should scientists be allowed to do whatever they want?
3. Why is science distrusted?
4. What is the most beautiful thing that you know in science?
5. Is science a "thing" or is it a way to look at the world?
6. Is there any science fiction that you enjoy?
7. What is the lastest discovery in astrophysics that we should all know about?
8. Have there been discoveries that have changed how we view the world, without us realising this change?
9. How do you figure all this out? (posed by person in the audience)

Topics that come up in the interview include, Titanic the movie and how its decade post-release is changed to be more scientifically accurate, farts on Mars, us humans are just hosts for bacteria to live, what Hubble was before becoming a telescope, Nemesis, Pluto, who are the two people that will die if an asteroid hits the earth, woolf moon, the Large Hadron Collider, parallel universes, black energy, the Higgs Boson, Black Holes, national science policy, etc.

A great highlight, and an excellent icing on the cake is Tyson meeting Steven's challenge to answer in less that 10 words the question: "Why is there something rather that nothing?" As much as I'm tempted to copy his answer, I won't spoil it for you. If, on the other hand you choose not to wait, you can find it here.
