Tangled Thursday - No Paper Allowed

This week's challenge is to use a medium other than a flat sheet of paper or a traditional Zentangle tile to draw your tangles.Go wild. Use fabric, flower pots, glass window, if you can draw on it, then it's fair game.

Last visit in New Zealand, we visited the Sculpture Gardens north of Helensville.
We learned about it from a random online search and were pleased to find this hidden gem.

This large installation, made of stone and wood chips, reminds me of Zentangles. It's kind of hard to see with the shadows and sunlight, but worth taking a look.

Welcome to Tangled Thursday.  A few of my online friends have joined me in an occasional Zentangle challenge.  We'll take turns choosing a theme which I'll post here on my blog.  At that time, I'll add Mister Linky and invite you to add a link to your drawing using that them.  I'll leave the linky open till the next challenge is posted, usually two weeks. Any one who participates could be contacted to decide our next challenge.

I didn't have a garden to play with, but the wooden dragonfly was fun.  I decided to use the same tangle, Fingers variation, on each wing. The central body is Twizted, from the challenge issued by Elaine two weeks ago.  To fill in between the wings, I used Florz.

I am quite pleased with how my Tanglefly turned out.

I have second one waiting to take flight, hopefully by next week.

Did you have a chance to tangle not on paper, Mister Linky is waiting below.  If you don't have a blog, email me your photo and I'll post it below.

Tangled Thursday - Time to try Twizted

Wow, time sure is flying when it's a holiday weekend and the kid(s) are home.  I had planned to have this ready on Thursday evening, but one thing after another, and family does come first...

Our challenge is to use the tangle Twizted . That's it, give it a try and use it somehow.  Thanks Elaine, I haven't tried this one. To me it looks like braided hair. This tangle looks like one where it will make a difference whether I do it large scale or tiny scale.

I'll leave this challenge up for two weeks and then we're on to another.  I'll give you a head start on that one.  Use any tangles you want, but use a medium other than a flat sheet of paper or a Zentangle tile.  Use fabric, paint, flower pots, wood, your window, whatever you want.  Have fun and play.  my plans are to work with these wooden dragon flies.  I bought them ages ago and have been holding on to them awaiting inspiration.  I'm sure I'll find it in the next few weeks.

Have fun playing with Twizted , create a post, them come back and link up with Mister Linky.  If you don't have a blog, then send me an email ( heatherdpear at hotmail dot com ) with the photo attached and I'll add it to this post.

Tangled Thursday - Time to give Zopfe a try

I can't believe how quickly the past two weeks have flown by.  It seems I was just playing with colours on a tile and now Carolien has a new challenge for us.  She wants us to use Zopfe in  a drawing.  Here's what she had to say:
I would love to see how you use Zöpfe in a drawing. I really love the look of it, but the outcome is never what I would like it to be when I draw it. Like it doesn't like playing with the other tangles I choose. lol. So I've been wanting to explore it further, this seemed like an excellent time for that :)

This wasn't and easy nor natural one for me either.  I gave it a couple of tries, and while I feel better about the later ones, it's still not sitting comfortably with me.  The one in the centre was my first attempt, the one on the right, my second, and the multiple ones on the left, my third.  By the third try I was getting the hang of it.   At first I missed that the ends of the strokes were supposed to lay on top of each other.

All are welcome to join in the fun.  If you are new to Zentangles, then visit the website for a complete explanation and all sorts of online resources.  I'm also a big fan of TanglePatterns

A bookmark featuring the tangle Zopfe

I'm still not sure about Zopfe, though it did go better on this tile.  I'll need to try it again on a smaller scale. Perhaps my base line was just to big making it hard for me to control the lines in the next step.  I have added teardrops, pokeleaf and a very poor rendition of Mumsy.

it was barely warm enough to stand outside on Sunday evening and capture the sunset.  It was such a lovely shade of pink.

Mister Linky is waiting below for a link to your post about Zopfe.

Tangled Thursday - Colours Abound

I'm wondering if Diane has been feeling the strain of so much winter white.  Her challenge this week is to use colour.
"I have been wanting to add just a touch of color to make a tile pop.  I have seen some spectacular ones that are in black and then have a couple fields of color - often red.  It might be some balloons, or the feathers or a bird - but some part of the entangle filled with color.  But only one part so it pops out.

If that doesn't float your boat, then add a little (or a lot) of color somewhere ... or else just make a tile!!  I sure want to see whatever you come up with.  Please no stress about this one .. it is something I have so wanted to try and have been hesitant."

I've used coloured markers previously and wanted to do something different.  I did all the drawing in ink that used pencil crayons to add that pop of colour.  Currently I am doing a colour theory class and a recent lesson dealt with complementary colours, hence my choice of yellow-green and red-violet.

Welcome to Tangled Thursday.  A few of my local and online friends have joined me in an occasional Zentangle challenge.  We'll take turns choosing a theme which I'll post here on my blog.  At that time, I'll add Mister Linky and invite you to add a link to your drawing using that them.  I'll leave the linky open till the next challenge is posted, usually two weeks.  All are welcome to join in the fun.  If you are new to Zentangles, then visit the website for a complete explanation and all sorts of online resources.  I'm also a big fan of TanglePatterns

This week I decided to use the book Zentangle 6 by Suzanne McNeill to find the tangles to use.  This small book considers using stencils instead of strings.  I am partial to the cowboy boot.

I used the following tangles: tire treads, star map, sponge, bristles, seed pods, and jagged.

I hope that you'll play along with use and draw your own colourful Zentangle inspired piece of art, post it on your blog then come back here and add your link to Mister Linky.  I'll be back in two weeks with our next challenge.

Tangled Thursday - W is where it's at

It has taken me a while to get my W challenge posted.  I did have it ready last week, though I couldn't figure how to get the image from my phone to my blog.

I drew this on my flight to visit my sister.  The lighting was coming from the wrong side, meaning I was drawing in shadow.  That is difficult to say the least and then there were the movements of the plane to consider.

I was also using a piece of water colour postcard paper.  I fell that a larger tip pen would have been better.  This paper really seemed to absorb the pen ink.

I am linking this up with last week's post where the rules of this challenge are written.  Be sure to visit there for links to the other W challengers.  You are invited to submit a link to your W drawing, see last week's post for the details.

I'll be back next week with our next challenge, which will be devised by Diane.

Tangled Thursday - A New Format

Welcome to Tangled Thursday.  A few of my local and online friends have joined me in an occasional Zentangle challenge.  We'll take turns choosing a theme which I'll post here on my blog.  At that time, I'll add Mister Linky and invite you to add a link to your drawing using that them.  I'll leave the linky open till the next challenge is posted, usually two weeks.  All are welcome to join in the fun.  If you are new to Zentangles, then visit the website for a complete explanation and all sorts of online resources.  I'm also a big fan of TanglePatterns

This weeks challenge was issued by Tami at Just One More Thing.  She and her husband have just started their business named Wabash Construction. You can read her post about the new business here.

Here's what Tami has to say about the challenge:
in honor of our new business "Wabash Construction" - the theme is the letter "W".  You can use patterns that start with W, use a W as your string, or any other way you can think of to include W in your drawing.  Let's try to post these on Thursday, February 12th.

I have been busy getting ready for a trip to visit my sister and haven't drawn a thing, yet.  I still have time right. Actually, I left yesterday and scheduled this post ahead of time.

ps. feel free to grab a copy of the Tangled Thursday button and add it to your post.

Mister Linky is waiting below.

Tangled Thursday - Winter how ever you want it.

Thanks to Marie for challenging us with the theme of Winter.  How ever we wanted to approach it, as long as it conveyed winter.

Few years ago, I bought some snowflake cookie cutters. I haven't used them to make any cookies.  Today they stood in as a template for my tangles.  I traced the two different sizes, divided them in six sections and picked up my blue pen.

i should have left a bit of a margin around the smaller flake as I don't think it stands out enough from the larger one.  I did shade around it to show that the smaller flake is in front of the larger one.

Tangles used in the smaller flake: rain variation, knights bridge, floating disks, cheese cloth, weave and chartz.  larger flake: cuddles, cadent, flying geese, papyrus, nippa, and asian fans.

Welcome to Tangled Thursday.  A few of my local and online friends have joined me in an occasional Zentangle challenge.  We'll take turns choosing a theme  and them post our drawings in about 2 weeks time.  All are welcome to join in the fun.  If you are new to Zentangles, then visit the website for a complete explanation and all sorts of online resources.  I'm also a big fan of TanglePatterns

I hope that you had a chance to do some tangling this week.  Mister Linky is waiting below for a link to your current Zentangle post.

Tangled Thursday - Playing with Arukas

When I first saw the tangle Arukas back in the fall, I could see the potential for lots of fun.  Life didn't allow time for much tangling and it sort of drifted to the side.  I still wanted to get back to try it so I issued
a challenge to my tangling friends.  Use Arukas any way you want, though draw it out on it's own first.

Here's my first attempt.

Next up, mulitiple Arukas. I started with a simple thread with 4 areas and drew Arukas in each staying within the thread.  In the upper left,  as I was filling in, I ended up with an open space and decided to fill that with a smaller Arukas.  I need to shade that one a bit more so it recedes further.
In this case, I didn't start with a thread.  I drew the 4 centre circles and lightly numbered them with a pencil.  Number 1 is in the upper left.  I draw all 5 of it's rays radiating out past all the other circles.  Number 2 in the upper right, also drew all it's rays out fully, breaking the lines when they passed below the existing lines from one.  For the next 2 circles, some rays I extended and others I stopped when they reached another ray.  I used only brown marker for number 1 and both brown and pink for the others.    Needs more shading to better show depth.

I hope that you have played with Arukas.  Mister Linky is waiting below for your link to your current Zentangle related post, or your Arukas post.

Tangled Thursday - The surprise that I received.

A year ago I gave my niece a gift of Zentangle supplies with the hopes that she would find it interesting.  She studied fine arts and literature at university and is poised to begin her teaching career.  I felt that Zentangles was something she could do with her students.  I was surprised when I opened a Christmas card from her with this lovely tile inside.  Having no idea how long she has been tangling, I think she did a terrific job.

I'm also a big fan of TanglePatterns

i took a bit of a break from tangling at the end of last year; now I am feeling ready to leap back in again.  Look forward to a new challenge next week.

Tangled Thursday - Negative Space

It's been far too long since I tangled anything.  Diane has nudged out group back on track by challenging us to use negative space.

I tried this once before and was unhappy with my results.  I didn't outline my space and then the tangles I selected had too much open spaces with in them.  This time I outlined my space with a black pen and then tangled away.  I am happy with the results though I have some ideas on how to improve next time.  Always a learning opportunity.

Thanks to Diane for the challenge.

My post from yesterday is looking for photos of your Advent or Countdown to Christmas Calendar

Mister Linky is waiting below for a link to your current Zentangle related post or a negative space tangle from a previous post.

Tangled Thursday - The Letter P

The Letter P.  That was our challenge by Elaine, tangle the letter P in any way you want.  I took it literally and purchased a small wooden letter.  It's just over 6 inches in height and  2 1/2 inches wide.  Tangles used: papyrus, wud, intersection, floating disks, paradox and zedbra.

This was a fun challenge having so few instructions/rules. It gave me the freedom to do a letter shape, something I've been wanting to do for a while.

I'll be giving this letter to my nephew Paul.

Did you play along this week and tangle with 'P'.  Add a link to your 'P' post, or your other current tangle related post to Mister Linky below.

Tangled Thursday - Patterns inside Patterns

Tami, at Just One More Thing, challenged us to create a pattern within a pattern.  She posted a good example to illustrate. This led me to think of some quilt blocks I have been working on over the past year.  The blocks are made up of diamonds and triangles. Perfect for this challenge.  (I have five blocks sewn and many more pieces cut, but still a long way from revealing my progress).
I'm also a big fan of TanglePatterns.com.
After a bunch of playing around to lightly draw some pencil lines for guidance, I started in the middle with the mooka.  Since I am still not comfortable with that tangle, I kept them simple.  Next I did the outside points. I worked all same triangles/diamonds at the same time in an attempt to keep them as identical as possible.

This was worked on a 9 x 12 inch piece of multi media paper.  It was very flat looking before I added the shading.  #Zentangle

One of my earlier thoughts on creating this piece, was to draw each different triangle/diamond once in a larger size, photo copy and then cut and paste to make a very large piece of artwork.  That way I could include lots of detail in each segment.  I may still do that at a later date.

thanks to Tami for the fun Challenge. Elaine is up next and then it's Diane's turn.

I'm looking forward to seeing some other pattern within a pattern drawings.  Leave a comment below and/or add a link to Mister Linky and I'll be sure to drop by for a visit.

Tangled Thursday - getting back on track

It's been a few weeks since I picked up my pens and tangled.  Thanks to Marie of Daisy's Book Journal, we have a fun challenge this week.  This is what she had to say:

Since I haven’t been drawing all summer and don’t even know when my zentangle-ing gear is,  the challenge is just pick up your supplies and create a zentangle related drawing.  That’s it!  Any size, any patterns.  Fun shape or square.  On paper or on anything you want.  Totally open.   No rules, other than you have to use zentangle patterns in some way.

No time to draw??  Create a quick post pointing to your favourite zentangle related blog or website.  If you have time, you can tell us a little about it.
Don’t like that idea??  How about posting a previous drawing that you did?  One that you haven’t shared before.

I guess the main idea is to post something zentangle related...for everyone to get back into this.
I needed a challenge like this to get me moving.  I have been buying small wooden shapes and objects from Michaels and it was time to put them to use.  The first is a wooden tag, measures about 2 x 3 inches.  I coated it with a silver metallic paint and drew one tangle.
I'm also a big fan of TanglePatterns.com.

I was shopping with daughter, and she has a continuing fascination with all things Halloween.  She keeps it pretty much in check, but it gets the better of her at time and led her to select this little coffin.  It's about 5 inches long and 1 1/2 tall.  I painted it with a bone white acrylic paint. I knew I wanted to border the lid so it would be clearly defined, and the rest I went with the moment.  i still have a bit more work to do on the top.

Marie also asked up to talk about a site we really enjoy.  Ornation Creation is the brain child of Ben Kwok.  He has made the most wonderful outline drawings which he freely posts on the Facebook Group.  You can then print them out as a very pale 'string' and then tangle till your hearts content.  I have printed out several of the files onto all purpose art paper and am looking forward to filling them in.  You must go visit this site and check out the amazing work.

Are you tangling this week?  Mister Linky is waiting below.  Leave a comment and I'll be sure to drop by for a virtual visit.

Tangled Thursday - Duos

I may be a bit late today in posting my Zentangle tile, though I did spend a lot of time thinking about how I wanted to approach this challenge from Diane.  She proposed that we choose two tangles that were new to us, and use them and more if wanted on the same tile.

I choose seven new to me tangles, drew them in my sketch book and then gave it to my daughter.  I asked her to draw lines connecting the ones that I should use together.

So far, I have completed one of these and more will follow through out the weekend.

Checkered Zag & Eye-wa

Update: August 15 at 8:03pm.

I finished two additional tiles with combinations chosen by daughter.

Drup and Warped Eggs

Yincut and Kitchener
I couldn't resist Kitchener since it is a town next to where I live.
I hope that you had a change to try some new to you tangles this past week.  Mister Linky is waiting below for you to add a link to your current Zentangle related post.

Tangled Thursday - Bring on Zeta

You're getting a twofer today.  My mom broke her leg last week and I am at her house offering care.  Yesterday we sat together on the sofa and worked on Zeta.  This is a new tangle to both of us.  We included purple since that is the colour of her new cast.  You can see a good picture of it in my Tuesday Needlework post.   isn't she a beauty and she gets to keep it for at least 4 weeks.

This first tiles is Elaine's.  A much more open feel than mine.
This second tile is mine.  i used the following tangles: zeta, swirls, knightsbridge, kings crown, growth, and port holes.  I found zeta not the easiest.  It was difficult to keep the proportions the same from zed to zed.  And as I said earlier, it's a more open and free tangle which I'm not as comfortable with.

I also brought with me my tin of zendalas, so they are next on our list of things to attack in her convalescence.

I'm also a big fan of TanglePatterns.com.

Did you get a chance to work with Zeta?  Mister Linky is waiting below for your link.  Please leave a comment and I'll be sure to visit.

Tangled Thursday - Making use of Negative Space

This week's challenge was from Marie at Daisy's Book Journal, to use negative space. Please drop by Marie's blog this week and leave her a message of encouragement.  The river behind her house is flooding and it's expected to be bad.  It flooded two years ago and that was supposed to have been a 300 year storm.  This could easily be worse.

I started by drawing a five point star and then tangling around it.  At first I was going to let the tangles define the edges of the star, but then realised that wouldn't work because I started with Questing, which is a very open tangle.  After adding dots along the sides of the star I felt much better about it's visibility.  Additional tangles used: Hair, Firecracker, Fog Horn and Traffic.  This is my first time using pink and I find I love the combination of it with black.  I'll be using this one a lot more.  Shading is important in this tile.  The pink section of Hair was very boring, then I lightly shaded in some folds and it's much better.

I'm also a big fan of TanglePatterns.com.
Our previous challenge was from Elaine to use String 109.  I finally have some photos to share.  This was a fun colour pen to use.  Tangles used: Hypnotic, Angel Fish, Zedbra, Bunzo, Fence, Banner and Echoist.
This same string looks totally different on this tile.  Tangles used: Citrus, Knightsbridge, Cadent, Cartz, Paradox and Keeko.

Have you been tangling with negative space this week.  Mister Linky is waiting below for a link to your post.  Any current post is welcome as well as links to earlier posts that show negative space.

Tangled Thursday - String 109

Elaine challenged us to use string 109 this week, which can be found at Tanglepatterns.com.  Unfortunately, life got in the way and I haven't finished mine.  I am hemming daugther's prom dress.  I figured it would take a couple hours and then I could get on to my tangles.  oops.  Little did i know that my sewing machine can't handle the sheer fabric of the skirt.  I was able to hem the satin layer, no problem.  But sheer was absolutely a no go.  It slipped all over the place, the feed dogs just couldn't seem to hold on to it.  eeks.  What to do.  I called my mom in a panic, after she calmed me down, we decided that a hand rolled hem was the way to go.  trouble is, there's 16 metres to hem.  **update - I just cut the extra from the top layer, and it is 13 metres itself, so 21 metres to hem.  It's a very full double layer of sheer over the satin kind of skirt.  It took eight hours to do one layer.  today the second layer. Thank goodness prom isn't till tomorrow.   After that, I'll continue with my version of string 109 and I'll be back and update my post.

I'm also a big fan of TanglePatterns.com.
