Trophy Wife

I would say I am excited about Trophy Wife, but that kind of emotion doesn't fit well with the band's ethos. The promotional literature from this Oxford trio tells me they regard their sound as "ambitionless office disco". As Self-depreciating as this may seem, it happens to be a neat way of packaging the bands creatively sparse take on the indie-disco genre into one sound bite. If you can imagine Swedish band Studio covering a Vampire Weekend track, you won't be far off.

Trophy Wife have signed up with label of the moment Moshi Moshi Records, and released their single Mircolite/Take This Night via download and 7" on 8th November.

Help, I'm Alive (Acoustic Version)

I posted Help, I'm Alive, back before Christmas. It's been on heavy rotation since, justifying my excited anticipation of the release of Metric's fourth studio album, Fantasies (due 14/04/09). Bridging the gap between then and now, The Band have kindly distributed an acoustic version of Help, I'm Alive via their website. Thanks guys. Dare I say I prefer this to the 'plugged' version:

Born Ruffians

I fucking LOVE Born Ruffians. I got hold of their debut L.P., Red, Yellow & Blue the other day and I'm still grinning. The band, comprising of Luke LaLonde (guitar/vocals), Mitch DeRosier (bass/vocals) and Steve Hamelin (drums), make lovably energetic guitar music, utilising vocal harmonies, minimal production and sporadic hootin' to memorable effect. I caught them at Korova the other week in what must have been one of the hottest gigs I've ever been to, both literally and metaphorically.

If you happen to be in the North America area (I hear there's 300 million of you), they're playing a shit load of shows with Plants and Animals throughout October, so be sure to catch them.

Daniel Rossen -Too Little Too Late (JoJo Cover)

In 2006, JoJo released her single Too Little Too Late, a pop highlight of the year. In late 2007, Daniel Rossen of Grizzly Bear covered it. Disposing of the beats and synthesised strings, Rossen strips To Little Too Late back to basics, filling it with sweeping harmonies and an all acoustic accompaniment. The resulting sound is uncannily similar to the music of Cat Stevens, instrumentally, yes, but it's vocally were this comparison is most pronounced. And while the original was an uplifting affair, Rossen's cover makes for a more sombre listen, highlighting the downbeat nature of the songs subject.

Advert Music

The cynical (and perhaps sensible) part of my personality believes music in adverts to be little more than a marketing ploy intended to endear the viewer to the product featured. Nonetheless, those annoying bits in between television programs have included some great music of late, whose quality (in the UK at least) has indeed endeared me to the products featured. Not that I could afford any of them.

Bag Raiders - Acoustic Cover

Have Fun Club posted this the other day. It's...get this... an acoustic cover of Bag Raiders Punch Fun by 19 year old, Sydney based Cassian. The fact that it sounds like it's been layed down using the most rudemetory of recording equipment, and that the timing is sometimes a little off, only adds to the tracks overall charm.

Q Magazine

Q Magazine's review of Feist's album, The Reminder:

"Considering the more daring company Leslie Feist keeps...her own work in suprisingly conventional. There are moments of creative flair on The Reminder, notably Sea Lion Women...and I Feel It All. She can certainly sing, but sadly the bulk of her introspective ballads to acoustic guitar accompaniment falls short of giving KT Tunstall any reason to look over her shoulder" (May 2007)

Fair enough. Their opinion is as valid as mine. But as we fast forward 8 months we find that as the magazine has become aware of Feist's appeal, all notions of intergrity are flung right out the window:

"Recorded in an old Parisian manor, it channels immediate emotional depth through delerious layers of jazz, pop and gently textured electronica"

Oh, and let's not miss My Moon, My Man featuring at number 11 in it's 50 Essential Tracks To Download This Month list. Little wonder music fans are shunning their once beloved print press. To hell with 'em.

Graduation: Samples

I think there's a general consensus about town, that Kanye West's latest album, Graduation, is consistent with the high caliber of previous efforts, College Dropout and Late Registration. Although, (in my humble opinion of course) it sags a little in the middle, I am in overall agreement with the prevailing reaction. But look, we all know that Kanye's work relies heavily on samples (not that I'm complaining like), so here's a comprehensive list of tracks used to make Graduation. Please note the ironic lyrics of Labi Siffre's My Song: "This is my song and no one can take it away"...'cept Kanye mate.

Feist

I was severely 'miffed' when my constant putting-off of purchasing tickets for Feist's Manchester gig inevitably led to the familiar "Sorry love, we're all sold out" line from the box office attendant. So in desperation I've bought tickets for the Nottingham show on 23RD September...111 miles away!!! Now, as happy as I am to be going, I own a 988cc 1992 Nissan Micra, so you can appreciate my concern about actually making it there. Any auto-mobile donations would be most appreciated.

Jumping On The Bandwagon

Check The Availability has given in to peer pressure and has jumped on the Myspace bandwagon. In fact, I suppose I'm a little late on this one as there seems to be a mass exodus to competitor social networking site, Facebook. I've joined with the aim of making it easier for individuals to draw my attention to great tracks as well as allowing artists to promote their music. Please feel free to add the blog as a 'friend' at: www.myspace.com/checktheavailability.

While musing about the site, I've realised that there is a considerable lack of acoustic/folk music featured, a genre which I have a genuine affection for. Then I recalled receiving an e-mail from Norwegian singer-songwriter Sebastian Waldejer asking me to consider blogging his music. Clearly inspired by the likes of Sufjan Stephens and the late Nick Drake, together with traces of Radiohead, Waldejer takes advantage of minimalistic production and delicate harmonies to enhance his beautifully fragile voice. A pleasant alternative to the faddy James Blunts and Damien Rices of the world. New single Touch Of Soul is available now. Well worth a listen.

Trocobrahma

As skint as I was, I managed to get myself to the New Picket to attend the Trocabrahma Culture Jam, an event that I hoped would "synthesise the finest in established and emerging UK and Brazilian music talent for an incandescent must-see live show, urban art and truly exclusive collaborations".

Now, I'll be open with you, I think of this event as nothing more than a cynical marketing tool to embed the Brahma brand into youth culture, developed by a brewery with a 2006 market capitalisation of $41.7 billion dollars. But we'll push that aside for now. Although I didn't see the full line-up, what heralded unfortunately did not live up to its own hype: Romulo Froes, King Creosote, Tony Da Gatorra, Gruff Rhys and Tita Lima. I don't know if it was just the mood I was in, or maybe the beer I was drinking, but none of what I saw even hinted on the flair that one associates with Brazilian music. This chiefly demonstrated by Gruff Rhys (who's solo stuff isn't bad) and Tony Da Gatorra's collaborative set, who's mind numbingly arid sound seemed hopelessly monotonous and unfitting. One guy I missed, Ben Westbeech, from what I've heard, would have enthused life into what should have been an invigorating experience.

Anyway, as cynical and despondent as I may sound, money permitting of course, I hope to go see Diplo (as part of the same event) for a dose of grizzly hip-hop. Brahma anyone?

Odds n' Ends

This is just a small selection of some really great, quirky music that has been collected over recent months. Apologies for the Inspector Gadget theme tune. It just has so many memories of my youth associated with it. Thanks to The Pelican's Perch for drawing my attention to the quintisentially French, La Noyee, composed by avant-garde musician Yann Tiersen. A song featured on the equally French, Amelie.
