BEYOND SURFACE: CLOSE READING & RESPONSE BASED ON SOUND, SHAPE & SYMBOL In this workshop we will read a poem aloud & explore its non-semantic attributes to glean elements that resonate in order to write poems in response or simply to appreciate it. Too often in poetry, readers are focused solely on semantic surface meaning rather than considering other elements that make up a poem’s music, and mood. Let’s see what happens when we focus on sound, shape (including line break, punctuation, line length), symbol (including imagery, free association with Jungian archetypes, mythology). Each participant will write something (a line, a poem, an image) inspired by the source poem and will share the results with the group.

Poet,  publisher, fiction writer, Amanda Earl is the managing editor of Bywords.ca , and the fallen angel of AngelHousePress. Her books include Kiki (Chaudiere Books, 2014); A World of Yes (DevilHouse, 2015);  and Coming Together Presents Amanda Earl (Coming Together, 2014). She was inducted into the VERSeOttawa Hall of Honour in 2014, and two of her manuscripts have been shortlisted for the Robert Kroetsch Innovative Poetry Award. Pearl Pirie runs a poetry workshop at The Wesboro Brainery (Ottawa), Wednesday, June 4, 2014;

The Westboro Brainery is a social recreation program where the community teaches and learns together. Classes are inexpensive, a couple of hours long, and taught by hobbyists, experts, nerds and academics. They can be mainstream, slightly strange or downright wacky; as long as the subject is interesting to some, a class will run.

Another Notch Up - Poetry Workshop, Wed. Jun. 4, 7-8:30pm, $8

Poetry is learning to refine your words. A poem from each participant will get detailed comments for density, sharpness and energy. A reading list of links to tips to tighten and torque, and to poetics articles will be handed out. Each participant gets a chance to consider what shines or needs polishing in each other's work in a cooperative environment moderated by the workshop leader Pearl Pirie. They'll be time to do an exercise together to (optionally) share. Pearl Pirie has two poetry collections (Thirsts, 2011 and been shed bore, 2010), and a third forthcoming with BookThug in 2015. She has a few chapbooks, a micro press, several blogs, a gig as literary radio host for Literary Landscape and irregular gigs to teach poetry. She has run the Tree Seed Poetry Workshops series since 2009.

Paying Attention: Poetry and Spirituality : a workshop by Anne Le Dressay

Chaudiere Books author Anne Le Dressay will be teaching a workshop on Poetry and Spirituality through the new SpiritArt program sponsored by the Anglican church. The workshop takes place at All Saints Sandy Hill, 317 Chapel Street, Ottawa on Saturday, November 16, from 9:30 to 12:30. Here's the description:

Paying Attention: Poetry and Spirituality
Poetry is a close relative of prayer and mystical writing. It is a tool for self-knowledge and for connection to the world and its maker. Explore its possibilities  by reading, hearing, meditating upon and especially writing poetry. We will use some of the psalms in Leonard Cohen’s Book of Mercy as well as other poems as a framework for this workshop. If you have a favourite short poem (on any topic), please bring it along.

Chaudiere Books authors rob mclennan and Monty Reid will be reading as part of a group reading (along with Chris Jennings, David Groulx, Rhonda Douglas and Deanna Young) at the Main Branch of the Ottawa Public Library (120 Metcalfe Street) on Monday, October 7, 2013 at 7pm. In partnership with Versefest.

Also, rob mclennan will be running a poetry workshop at the Rosemount Branch of the Ottawa Public Library (18 Rosemount, at Wellington Street West) on Saturday, October 19, 2013 from 1-3pm. Pre-registration required.

Your poems will be read and discussed in a supportive small-group environment, facilitated by award winning and widely published poet Monty Reid. Participants will be encouraged to provide constructive feedback, and will get a chance to discuss the technical aspects of one another's poems. Once registered, submit up to five pages of poems, two weeks in advance. There will be time for each participant to workshop at least one poem on the day of the workshop.
