I use to live near Santa Barbare for 16 years. I use to love to fly in and out of Santa Barbara as it is a small airport and a very cute airport too.

Every Vow You Break by Peter Swanson

 

I read The Kind Worth Killing by Peter Swanson back in 2022. I really enjoyed this novel and have wanted to read another novel by Peter Swanson ever since. 

Earlier this month, I decided to listen to the unabridged audio version of Every Vow You Break by Peter Swanson, which was nicely narrated by Karissa Vacker. 

The narration for Every Vow You Break by Peter Swanson is the most positive thing I can say about this suspense/thriller novel! The first half of Every Vow You Break is sooooo painfully slow and things didn't pick up until the second half of this novel. 

Additionally, I can't say as I liked any of the characters either for Every Vow You Break. The storyline and plot weren't that engaging either. Most of the storyline and characters seemed so two dimensional at best. 

I was tempted to 'dnf' this book on several occasions, but since I really enjoyed the first novel I read by Peter Swanson, I pushed forward in hopes it would turn out to be a better read. I liked the premise of this novel, but sadly, Every Vow You Break wasn't a winner in my eyes.

Well, I am an avid reading and have read 41 books this year already. Apparently, I am not part of the above demographic mentioned in the above video.

According to writer, Rose Horowitch from The Atlantic, reading has declined by 40% in the past 20 years! Scary news for sure!

Resist by Tom Palmer

 

After reading and reviewing Over The Line by Tom Palmer earlier this month, I decided to listen to the unabridged audio version of Resist by Tom Palmer. Resist by Tom Palmer is well narrated by Anna Gilthorpe.

I loved listening to Resist! It's a well written novel set in Nazi occupied Netherlands during World War II. The story is inspired by the real life events of Audrey Hepburn as a teenager. Audrey Hepburn lived in the Netherlands during WWII with her family. She took part in helping with the Dutch Resistance in an effort to thwart the Nazi occupation of The Netherlands. 

I truly enjoyed reading about Audrey Hepburn's life during this time and how it affected her life and the life of others. Resist is a middle schooler read. It's an excellent historical fiction novel.

Blue Note Records - Enter the Blue by Dave Chisholm is my 39th read of 2026. I read the ebook edition of this graphic novel and thoroughly enjoyed it from start to finish! Dave Chisholm is super talented. He is both the writer and illustrator for Blue Note Records - Enter the Blue. Dave Chisholm is also a new to me author.

If you are a jazz music enthusiast or a lover of graphic novels with a great storyline and artwork, then Blue Note Records - Enter the Blue is the read for you! Jessie Choi is the leading character/protagonist for Blue Note Records - Enter the Blue. Jessie is a trumpet player. She's really good at playing the trumpet. But Jessie freezes up when she plays at live venues. Jessie doesn't feel like she's good enough and keeps comparing herself to another student at her music school. 

Jessie eventually becomes a music teacher as she doesn't think she's good enough to play the trumpet professionally. Jessie's mentor, Jimmy Hightower, keeps encouraging her to play the trumpet.

The New York International Antiquarian Book Fair

 

What an interesting video on the wide world of collecting antiquarian books and documents! 

The above YouTube video highlights "inside the secret world where the rarest books on Earth are bought and sold."

It would be interesting to attend this book fair in person simply to view what they have for sale and to gawk at the rare objects on display.

Over the Line by Tom Palmer

Earlier this month, I made a list of books that covered the topic of 'soccer' in some way as a way to tie it in with the 2026 FIFA World Cup games.

I am not a soccer fan, nor did I watch any of the 2026 FIFA World Cup games. With the 2026 FIFA World Cup happening, I decided to search for books that discuss soccer in some way. My hope is to inspire readers who are also soccer fans to read more books on a topic they like.

One of the books I discovered was Over the Line by Tom Palmer. Tom Palmer is a new to me author. Initially what attracted me to Over the Line by Tom Palmer was the fact that it features a large chunk of its subject matter to soccer. I soon learned that this children's/middle school novel is a work of historical fiction set in Europe during World War I. The events are inspired by real life events, which makes for good reading.

So, within a few minutes after learning about Over the Line by Tom Palmer, I downloaded and began listening to the unabridged audio version. Essentially, I finished listening to this book 2 hour, 10 minutes in one sitting.

The writing is good and so is the storyline for Over the Line. I was impressed with how much I enjoyed Over the Line. Perhaps, I'll have to give another one of Tom Palmer's novels a try in the future.

When I Arrived at the Castle by E. M. Carroll

 

I read the ebook edition of When I Arrived at the Castle by E. M. Carroll. It's a 72 page comic book that falls into the horror genre and involves a vampire.

When I Arrived at the Castle by E. M. Carroll is a super quick read.
I didn't enjoy this book. The artwork was so-so and the storyline was boring. This is the 1st book I've read by E. M. Carroll and it may just be my last read.

Last week, I made a post about discovering a 'sharing library' at the Oakland Airport. I found it very cool to see a reading library within a coffeehouse near a Southwest Airlines gate. 

Since making this post, it got me thinking about whether other airports across the nation have Little Free Libraries within them. Sure enough, there are other airports that have Little Free Libraries!

The Vaster Wilds by Lauren Groff

 

I listened to the unabridged audio version of The Vaster Wilds by Lauren Groff, which is nicely narrated by January LaVoy. The Vaster Wilds is the second novel I've read by Lauren Groff. I read Lauren Groff's novel, Matrix, back in 2021 and thoroughly enjoyed it. I've been meaning to read more of Lauren Groff's novels since then. This month I made it happen by finishing The Vaster Wilds.

I enjoyed aspects of The Vaster Wilds, like the fact that it is a very descriptive novel in almost every way as only Lauren Groff can do. This novel touches upon religion, the circle of life, nature itself, and more. I found the section on naming of things to be an interesting discussion. Also, the brutality and beauty of nature is described in much detail in this novel as well. But, overall, I wasn't in love with this novel as I'd hoped I'd be.

The Vaster Wilds is a work of historical fiction set in America during the time of early colonialism. The protagonist is a young servant girl, whom flees a colonial settlement suffering from the plague. It's the dead of winter and the climate is cold and harsh. She must go it alone and try to survive the vast wilderness on her own. As she journeys on her own, we learn more about her life and how she came to the American Colonies. Essentially, we learn of the world solely through the servant girl's eyes and it's the only perspective we have. I would have liked to see her interacting with others throughout this novel to give it more depth.

Underrated American Authors - These Writers Are Gems!

With it being the 250th anniversary of the United States of America this month on July 4th, it occurred to me to promote a few American authors that need more love! 

I came across this idea from a YouTuber. I decided to make my own list of underrated American authors that perhaps need more attention. Sure it's easy to list Octavia Butler, Joyce Carol Oates, Toni Morrison, Mark Twain, Louisa May Alcott, Pearl S. Buck, Kate Chopin, and so on. But who are some other, not so well known American writers who are gems?

I had a difficult time making this list because it's difficult to come up with American authors that I have read and consider underrated gems! It's a tall order for sure. I've added links to most of my reviews for each novel below. Check out the list below.

A Sharing Library Inside the Oakland Airport!!

 

I was scrolling through my photos on my phone, when I came across the above photo I had taken last month while waiting to board our flight to Las Vegas, Nevada. 

I'd forgotten all about taking this photo! My goal was to share it here in a blog post last month after returning home from our trip.

I thought it was super neat that this particular coffee shop offered a sharing library with books to read for those waiting to board their flights. I hope to see more airports offer either a sharing library or a Little Free Library in them.

 I watched this video yesterday on YouTube and loved it! Ann Patchett discusses her love of reading. It's an important message and one worth hearing. This video is almost 15 minutes. Check it out.

Me & Patsy Kickin' Up Dust: My Friendship With Patsy Cline by Loretta Lynn

 

I've had Me & Patsy Kickin' Up Dust: My Friendship With Patsy Cline by Loretta Lynn on my reading wishlist for quite a while. It's the 35th book I've read this year. I'm happy to have finally read Me & Patsy Kickin' Up Dust: My Friendship With Patsy Cline.

I remember first learning about Loretta Lynn when I watched the movie, 'A Coal Miner's Daughter', starring Sissy Spacek and Tommy Lee Jones with my parents when the movie first came out in 1980. I'm not a huge country western music fan, but I did enjoy the songs from this movie. 

Later in life, I became quite a Patsy Cline fan. I love her songs/singing to this day. What a beautiful voice Patsy Cline had. She died way too young. When Loretta Lynn wrote a memoir about their friendship, I couldn't resist reading Me & Patsy Kickin' Up Dust: My Friendship With Patsy Cline.
