The strict ban is not just discriminating; it is also useless. New technologies make HIV-testing faster, cheaper and more precise. They would help to erase suspicion by ensuring a 100% safe blood supply.
Other countries are much further ahead. In Australia, Great Britain and Sweden the blood ban has been replaced by a deferral program. While Austria, Spain and Poland have eradicated all bans and special programs for bisexual and homosexual men.
The ban is sustained by the German Medical Association’s unilateral decision against the modernisation of the hemotherapy guidelines.
These guidelines were implemented in response to the 1993 blood scandal, when it came out that earlier reports of potentially HIV infected blood units had been downplayed. Today, these same guidelines place bisexual and homosexual men in the same risk group as prostitutes and drug addicts.
The high demand of plasma and blood units is good for business but bad for Max and thousands of people in need.
‘Bunt Spenden’ is more than a petition. ‘Bunt Spenden’ is a good cause. And good causes need a lot of good press and support. Here you can find everything you need to know like why you should help and how you can get involved.
The LSVD is Germany’s biggest gay and lesbian organisation. We support and aid the gay and lesbian community with issues of legal and social discrimination, marginalisation and violence. Our organisation is convinced that fighting for the interests of gays and lesbians means organising political and societal majorities and being visible in the media.
We support a full integration of the rainbow family throughout society.
Berlin’s CSD e.V. is a lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender human rights organisation fighting against social and juridical discrimination and supporting personal development. The society organizes the annual Christopher Street Day Parade in Berlin and several other performances to encourage the politicisation of the LGBT community and resistance against discrimination.
DDB Berlin is a communication agency linked to one of biggest creative networks in the world - DDB Worldwide. We use Social Creativity to define brands and engage with socially relevant topics.
And like our founder, Bill Bernbach, we still hold: the future, as always, belongs to the brave.
