Oakland Charter School to Applicants: "No Oppression Liberators" Wanted.

(Special Thanks to Merv for putting me on to this).

What would you do if you stumbled across a job posting for a teaching position at an Inner City High School that warned its applicants: "DO NOT waste your time if you are a multi-cultural specialist, ultra-liberal zealot, college tainted "Oppression Liberator."

Well, that's exactly what one "progressive" blue-ribbon Oakland Charter School is telling its potential job-seekers. Take a look:
NO LIBERALS ALLOWED!!

Poor babies. I cant help but assume that this is this school's way of discouraging applications from the local Berkeley grad student crowd ("oppression liberator"-types par excellence).

Hilarious. Well not really. But still.

Liberal Zealot,
Frankie

Mourning the Megastore.

Yesterday while having a quiet, solo dinner at Planet Hollywood in Times Square, I learned that the world famous Virgin Megastore is going out a business. What a sad testament to these rough economic times (not to mention the death of the Cassette Disc). For as long as I can remember, The Virgin Megastore has been the emblematic sign of Times Square. I can remember spending countless hours in the store as an undergrad just roaming through the floors and listening to music. I also remember the days when thousands of fans would line up in front of the megastore for album signings by superstars like Janet Jackson, Whitney Houston, and Mariah Carey.

Another element of the late nineties/early 00s that has now passed on.

Explicit Ills opens at the Angelika Film Center in New York

The story of poverty, drugs, depression, and unequal access to health care among a group of neighbors in an inner city Philadelphia ghetto. The trailer is provocative, and the Angelika tends to bring in exceptional independent films. Opens March 6, 2009, starring Rosario Dawson.
