A Letter

Dear Friend,

I just wanted to thank you for NOT cleaning up after your dog on your last visit to the park. It really made my night when my son climbed into the van after playing at the park oblivious to the fact that his shoes were covered in dog leftovers and smeared those leftovers all over the seat. I am grateful for the opportunity I had to clean that mess up. My husband also wants to thank you for allowing him the opportunity to clean off our son's new school shoes. I didn't want to be selfish and have all the fun.

Sorry we could not thank you in person. We hope this letter will suffice. We hope you have a wonderful day too.

The Ballifs

P.S. If anybody needs a ride somewhere, just let us know!

Canning Season

The canning is done! When I'm looking at the boxes of waiting fruit I wonder if it really is worth it, but to see it all done now feels good. And now I can clean up my kitchen that has been a disaster area for the past two weeks. That will just add to the good feelings.

35 jars of peaches

4 jars of pearsauce

10 jars of raspberry jam

21 jars of pears (not all pictured--I can count)

Happy Birthday Anyway!

I had it all planned. I was going to be a "super-wife" and stage the best birthday yet so you would know just how much I love you and apppreciate all that you do for us.

Things started out okay. Caleb and I got the homemade (from scratch) chocolate cake made while Paige and Jane napped in the afternoon and the older boys were still at school.

Things went downhill fast from there. I just couldn't manage to do piano lessons, get the house all straightened up, get Cade to soccer practice, go to the store for party decorations (I could not for the life of me find our regular birthday sign and we were all out of ballons of course) and get them up all before you came home from work. Some days are just like that no matter how hard I try and I'm just sorry that it happened on your day.

So instead of a wonderful evening of celebrating you, you came home to a wife in tears because she had failed her own expectations. You of course are always and forever understanding and said that the only important thing was getting to spend time with your family.

We eventually did go out to dinner and after waiting for our food for almost an hour had some good burgers. They tasted even better after they told us they would be free for having to wait for so long.

I guess in the end all that really mattered was that we got to spend some time together as a family, enjoy a meal together and some delicious chocolate cake. Thanks for taking us as we are, flaws and all.

We do love you!

Happy Birthday Anyway!

Soccer Debut

Caleb waited patiently all last year to have his turn at soccer. I made him wait until he was in Kindergarten. Today was his big debut.

A fabulous corner kick.

A more appropriate name might be mob ball at this age. The kids were cracking me up.

He's a natural. It must be the German blood.

Cameron and Cade were able to attend a week of soccer camp this past August and unfortunately Caleb couldn't because he had broken his arm the week before. He still insisted on dressing the part down to his shin guards everyday while his brothers were off practicing.
His willingness to go to practice is a welcome relief around here.

Canning Helper

When I asked the boys to help me can the peaches Cameron and Cade disappeared but Caleb was eager to help. I was pleasantly surprised at how helpful he really was. Here he is removing skin and pits and slicing up those peaches. He even filled several jars with peaches for me. It was one of those happy mommy times for me. While we were working together I was telling him how glad I was that he was helping me and he responded (partially in reference to his brothers) with "I'm trying something new and I'm enjoying it!"

The Boy Who Broke His Arm

August 5th:
Blake and Kara decide to join a small group of friends for a little date night including dinner out at Boston's and a free movie (thanks Emily and Eric) afterwards. We had a nice evening with no frantic phone calls as you might suspect from the title of this post. When we got home the boys were all snug in their beds for which we were grateful (Paige was probably still awake because despite her having always been an excellent sleeper she has been giving the babysitters a tough time lately). As I'm driving Jayna home she mentions as an afterthought that Caleb had fallen off of the swing set down at the park and had cried for awhile but she had been able to distract him and he had settled down. To be honest I didn't think anymore of it. Because she said swing set I was thinking that he fell off of one of the swings and was crying so much because he had been really tired that evening. He was after all asleep in his bed at home.

August 6th:
Early the next morning I get up and go out for my morning run before Caleb wakes up. When I get home Blake says that he thinks Caleb might have broken his arm as his wrist is swollen and it hurts him to move it. I then remember what Jayna had mentioned. The boys clarify that he actually fell off of the YELLOW TUBE not the swing.

We finally made it to the urgent care later that day (after a morning of piano lessons and finally finding someone home to watch the other kids--I had to actually call my visiting teacher and ask for help...they always say "if you need something, just call"). Turns out he had broken BOTH his radius and his ulna. He had slept through the night and hadn't once complained all morning. He just wouldn't use the arm that was hurt. Tough kid.

Here he is with his splint and sling which he wore for a week while the swelling in his wrist subsided.

August 12th:
A visit with Dr. Brickner who outfits Caleb with a hard cast. I thought this was so interesting as I had never actually seen a cast be put on someone. He told us he would only need to wear it for 2 weeks as compared to the 6 to 8 weeks we were told at the urgent care.

Caleb modeling his new cast. Do you see a future career?

August 26th:

Back to Dr. Brickner to have the cast removed and more x-rays taken. The x-rays showed that the wrist was healing well but the tenderness Caleb was feeling told us that the bones weren't quite done healing. Dr. Brickner gave him a wrist guard to wear until it no longer hurt to push on the bones. This also meant he could take it off to bathe and we could go swimming at Silverwood. He ended up wearing the wrist guard for about 3 more weeks.

First Day of School

Cameron off to 4th Grade!

Caleb off to Morning Kindergarten!

Cade off to 2nd Grade!

My handsome boys. Growing up too fast.

Cameron and Cade will be attending the same elementary school while Caleb will be attending the Kindergarten Center.
They all catch the bus together and ride to the elementary school. From there Caleb will ride another bus with all the other Kindergarten students to the Kindergarten Center. When he comes home from school he just rides a bus directly from the Kindergarten Center to the bus stop right by our house where I meet him. To me it seems like a lot of bus riding to get to school for a such a little guy, but every time I question him about it he insists on riding the bus to school. True to form he was VERY disappointed that I insisted on taking him to school on his first day. Maybe I need to adopt the practice of following the bus to school on the first day and meeting my child there. Then we would all be happy, right?

Back to School Haircuts

It was two days before school and the boys still needed haircuts. I wasn't really feeling up to doing it myself this time(for SOME reason) so I decided I would splurge and spend some hard earned piano lesson money on haircuts. I was feeling it was definitely worth not listening to all the crying and complaining and avoiding the big mess while our house was still up for sale (those people can call at any moment you know). The boys of course weren't so sure that they needed or wanted to take time from their busy schedules to get haircuts but I insisted and loaded them, Paige and Jane, the neighbor girl that we watch 4 days a month, into the van and headed to the salon.

Caleb NOT very grumpy about getting his haircut:

Cade pretending to be grumpy about getting his haircut. He actually was a little grumpy but once I told him to get ready for a picture he got a little silly and couldn't keep a straight face.

Cameron truly grumpy about getting his haircut. He apparently had much better things to do with his time.

The "after" shots. No major tragedies at the salon and Cade and Cameron were actually happy about their new looks.

Cameron most happy that he now had time for one of those more important things in life.

Caleb now feeling genuinely grumpy about getting his picture taken for an "after" shot.
