A new Thomistic view of the Trinity

I think the historical Aquinas’ solution to how God is one in three persons is a relative identity view that posits two kinds of identity:

  1. Individual identity: the lack of a real distinction, where real distinction might come from a difference of matter (as in material substances), a difference of form (as in angels) or an opposition of real relations (as in the Trinity).

  2. Sameness of essence: having the numerically same substantial form.

While this is a relative identity account, it has an advantage over more standard relative identity accounts in that it nicely explains our intuitions about absolute identity. For on Aquinas’ solution, as far as we know, except where God is involved, the two identities are co-extensive. For Aquinas (like perhaps Aristotle) believes in individual forms of creatures, so all creatures that are distinct by individual identity have numerically distinct substantial forms, and conversely there are no mere creatures with two substantial forms. Thus when we are not dealing with God, we can afford to be ambiguous between the two kinds of identity, and hence talk as if there was absolute identity. (As far as I know, Thomas never makes this point.)

The point of this post, however, is to offer an alternative version of Aquinas’ two-identities account. The alternative is thoroughly Thomistic, but it’s not what Thomas has. Here it is. We have two kinds of identity. The first is individual identity, as in the historical Aquinas’ solution. The second is:

  1. Sameness of esse: having the numerically same esse or act of being.

Just as in the historical Aquinas’ solution, the alternate account has the feature that apart from theological cases, the two kinds of identity are co-extensive. Distinct individual creatures have distinct acts of being, and no creature has two acts of being.

A disadvantage of this view is that “sameness of esse” doesn’t fit quite as well as “sameness of essence” with the Nicene Creed’s “homoousion”. But some things are worth noting. The previous English translation of the Nicene Creed in the Catholic Church actually had “sameness of being”. The word ousia is the abstract form of einai, to be. And in God essence and act of being are the same by divine simplicity. So I think the disadvantage can perhaps be overcome.

An advantage, however, is that sameness of esse seems even more identity-like and unifying than sameness of form. If x and y have the very same act of being, it is hard to deny that there is a real unity between x and y. Here is one way to see the point. On Platonist metaphysics, unlike on Thomastic metaphysics, you and I have sameness of form: we each have the numerically same Form of Humanity. Granted, Platonist metaphysics may be false. But the fact that you and I count as having sameness of form on Platonist metaphysics should make a little less happy about using that as an account of the unity in the Trinity. On the other hand, once we supplement Platonist metaphysics with an act of being, it is clear that you and I will get different acts of being, since each of us can exist without the other doing so.

Moreover, this account may help cast a light on the thorny question of why Aquinas at one point posits a human esse in the incarnate Christ distinct from the divine esse (though elsewhere he denies it). For suppose that there is only one esse in Christ and we accept the sameness-of-being account. Then we would be able say that the Jesus Christ as human is God, since the one and only esse in Jesus Christ, whether as human or as God, is the divine esse, and this we shouldn’t say (and indeed Aquinas denies it). Thus if we accept the sameness of esse account, we get an argument for the two esse view of the Incarnation. Of course, we can turn this around. We might say that the two esse view is false, and hence the sameness of esse account is false.

Existing and existing at a time

If we accept growing block or eternalism as our theory of temporal reality, we have to make a distinction between existing simpliciter (i.e., being in the domain of unrestricted quantifiers) and existing-at-a-time (including tensed existence at the present). To exist at time t is not the same as its being the case at t that one exists simpliciter.

Suppose, for instance, closed-future growing block. Then we can say the following about Bucephalus (circa 355 BC–326 BC):

  1. In 330 BC: Bucephalus exists-in-330-BC.

  2. In 330 BC: Bucephalus exists simpliciter.

  3. In 2025: Bucephalus exists simpliciter.

  4. In 2025: It’s not the case that Bucephalus exists-in-2025.

  5. In 3000 BC: Bucephalus does not exist simpliciter.

  6. In 3000 BC: Bucephalus exists-in-330-BC.

Existence-at-a-time is not really existence—it is just spatiotemporal locatedness. (Of course, we have a grounding problem about how on closed-future growing block facts about the future are grounded, but bracket that.)

Now, on both growing block and eternalism, if something exists-now it exists simpliciter. Could one have a theory on which this inference is denied?

Perhaps Platonism denies it. Only timeless and unchanging things really are. Changing things in time become rather than really are. Similarly, it is said that God said to St Catherine of Siena: “I am he who is and you are she who is not.”

But is there a theory of time on which the inference is denied? I once explored a version of B-theory like that. Now I want to consider a version of A-theory like that.

Consider pastism, on which to exist simpliciter is to exist pastly, and take a version of pastism on which there are moments of time (probably the best version of pastism on offer is one where there are no moments). Suppose t1 is the first moment of Bucephalus’ life. Then on pastism, at t1 Bucephalus doesn’t exist, but Bucephalus exists-at-t1. Is this coherent? It does have this odd consequence. Suppose t1 is also the last moment of time (so Bucephalus exists at exactly one moment). Then Bucephalus exists-at-t1, but it is never the case that Bucephalus exists simpliciter. Still, it’s not clear that a logical contradiction has occurred.

Nonetheless, it does seem absurd to suppose that something exists-now but doesn’t exist, even if it’s not strictly contradictory.

What is an existential quantifier?

What is an existential quantifier?

The inferentialist answer is that an existential quantifier is any symbol that has the syntactic features of a one-place quantifier and obeys the same logical rules of an existential quantifier (we can precisely specify both the syntax and logic, of course). Since Carnap, we’ve had good reason to reject this answer (see, e.g., here).

Here is a modified suggestion. Consider all possible symbols that have the syntactic features of a one-place quantifier and obeys the rules of an existential quantifier. Now say that a symbol is an existential quantifier provided that it is a symbol among these symbols that maximizes naturalness, in the David Lewis sense of “naturalness”.

Moreover, this provides the quantifier variantist or pluralist (who thinks there are multiple existential quantifiers, none of them being the existential quantifier) with an answer to a thorny problem: Why not simply disjoin all the existential quantifiers to make a truly unrestricted existential quantifier, and say that that is the existential quantifier? THe quantifier variantist can say: Go ahead and disjoin them, but a disjunction of quantifiers is less natural than its disjuncts and hence isn’t an existential quantifier.

This account also allows for quantifier variance, the possibility that there is more than one existential quantifier, as long as none of these existential quantifiers is more natural than any other. But it also fits with quantifier invariance as long as there is a unique maximizer of naturalness.

Until today, I thought that the problem of characterizing existential quantifiers was insoluble for a quantifier variantist. I was mistaken.

It is tempting to take the above to say something deep about the nature of an existential quantifier, and maybe even the nature of being. But I think it doesn’t quite. We have a characterization of existential quantifiers among all possible symbols, but this characterization doesn’t really tell us what they mean, just how they behave.

Inferentialism and the fictitious isolated hydrogen atom

This is another attempt at an argument against inferentialism about logical constants.

Given a world w, let w* be a world just like w except that it has added to it an extra spatiotemporally disconnected island universe containing exactly one hydrogen atom with a precisely specified wavefunction ψ0. Suppose that in in the actual world there is no such isolated hydrogen atom. Now, given a nice first-order language L describing our world, let L* be a language whose constants are the same as the constants of L with an asterisk added to every logical constant, name and predicate. Given a sentence ϕ of L, let ϕ* be the corresponding sentence of L*—i.e., the sentence with all of L’s logical constants asterisked.

Let the rules of inference of L* be the same as those of L with asterisks added as needed.

Let the semantics of L* be as follows:

  • Every predicate P* in L* means the same thing as P in L.

  • Every name a* in L* means the same thing as a in L.

  • Any sentence ϕ* in L* without quantifiers means the same thing as ϕ in L.

  • But if ϕ* has a quantifier, then ϕ* means that ϕ would be true if there were an extra spatiotemporally disconnected island universe containing exactly one hydrogen atom with wavefunction ψ0.

Thus, ϕ* is true in world w if and only if ϕ is true in w*.

Observe that because L contains only names for things that exist in the actual world, and hence not for the extra hydrogen atom or its components, an atomic sentence P(a1,...,an) in L is true if and only if the corresponding sentence P*(a1*,...,an*) is true in L*.

Logical inferentialism tells us that the logical constants of L* mean the same thing as those of L, modulo asterisks. After all, modulo asterisks, we have the same inferences, the same meanings of names, and the same meanings of predicates. But this is false: for if ∃* in L* were an existential quantifier, then it would be true that there exists an isolated hydrogen atom with wavefunction ψ0. But there is none such.

Inferentialism and the completeness of geometry

The Quinean criterion for existential commitment is that we incur existential commitment precisely by affirming existentially quantified sentences. But what’s an existential quantifier?

The inferentialist answer is that an existential quantifier is anything that behaves logically like an existential quantifier by obeying the rules of inference associated with quantifiers in classical logic.

Here is a fun little problem with the pairing of the above views. Tarski proved that, with an appropriate axiomatization, Euclidean geometry is complete and consistent, i.e., for every geometric sentence ϕ, exactly one of ϕ and its negation is provable from the axioms. Now let us stipulate a philosophically curious language L*. Syntactically, the symbols of L* are the symbols of L but with asterisks added after every logical connective, and the sentences are of L* are the sentences of L with an asterisk added after every connective and predicate. The semantics of L* are as follows: the sentence ϕ of L* means that the sentence of L formed by dropping the asterisks from ϕ is provable from the axioms of Euclidean geometry.

Inferentially, the asterisked connectives of L* behave exactly like the corresponding non-asterisked connectives of L.

Consider the sentence ϕ of L* that is written *x(x=*x). This sentence, by stipulation, means that x(x=x) is provable from the axioms of Euclidean geometry. According to the Quinean criterion plus inferentialism, it incurs existential commitment, because ∃*x, since it behaves inferentially just like an existential quantifier, is an existential quantifier. Now, it is intuitively correct that *x(x=*x) does incur existential commitment: it claims that there is a proof of ∃x(x=x), so it incurs existential commitment to the existence of a proof. So in this case, the inferentialist Quinean gets right that there is existential commitment. But rather clearly only coincidentally so! For now consider the sentence ψ that is written *x(x=*x). Since ∀*x behaves inferentially just like ∀x, by inferentialist Quineanism it incurs no existential commitment. But ψ means that there is a proof of x(x=x), and hence incurs exactly the same kind of existential commitment as ϕ did, which said that there was a proof of x(x=x).

What can the inferentialist Quinean respond? Perhaps this: The language L* is syntactically and inferentially compositional, but not semantically so. The meaning of p*q, namely that the unasterisked version of p*q has a proof, is not composed from the meanings of p and of q, which respectively mean that p has a proof and that q has a proof. But that’s not quite right. For meaning-composition is just a function from meanings to meanings, and there is a function from the meanings of p and of q to the meaning of p*q—it’s just a messy function, rather than the nice function we normally associate with disjunction.

Perhaps what the inferentialist Quinean should do is to insist on the intuitive non-inferentialist semantic compositional meanings for the truth-functional connectives, but not for the quantifiers. This feels ad hoc.

Even apart from Quineanism, I think the above constitutes an argument against inferentialism about logical connectives. For the asterisked connectives of L* do not mean the same thing as their unasterisked variants in L.

Modal details in Unger's argument against his existence

Unger famously argues that he doesn’t exist, by claiming a contradiction between three claims (I am quoting (1) and (2) verbatim, but simplifying (3)):

  1. I exist.

  2. If I exist, then I consist of many cells, but a finite number.

  3. If I exist and I consist of many but a finite number of cells, then removal of the least important cell does not affect whether I exist.

Unger then says:

these three propositions form an inconsistent set. They have it that I am still here with no cells at all, even while my existence depends on cells. … One cell, more or less, will not make any difference between my being there and not. So, take one away, and I am still there. Take another away: again, no problem. But after a while there are no cells at all.

But taken literally this is logically invalid. Premise (2) says that I consist of many but a finite number of cells. But to continue applying premise (3), Unger needs that premise (2) would still be true no matter how many cells were taken away. But premise (2) does not say anything about hypothetical situations. It says that either I don’t exist, or I consist of a large but finite number of cells. In particular, there are no modal operators in (2).

Now, no doubt this is an uncharitable objection. Presumably (2) is not just supposed to be true in the actual situation, but in the hypothetical situations that come from repeated cell-removals. At the same time, we don’t want (2) to be ad hoc designed for this argument. So, probably, what is going on is that there is an implied necessity operator in (2), so that we have:

  1. Necessarily, if I exist, then I consist of many cells, but a finite number.

The same issue applies to (3), since (3) needs to be applied over and over in hypothetical situations. Another issue with (3) is that to apply it over and over, we need to be told that removal of the cell is possible. So now we should say:

  1. Necessarily, if I exist and I consist of many but a finite number of cells, then removal of the least important cell is possible and does not affect whether I exist.

Now, I guess, we can have a valid argument in S4.

Is this a merely technical issue here? I am not sure. I think that once we’ve inserted “Necessarily” into (4) and (5), our intuitions may start to shift. While (2) is very plausible if we grant the implied materialism, (4) makes us wonder whether there couldn’t be weird situations where I exist but don’t consist of many but a finite number of cells. First, it’s not obviously metaphysically impossible for me to grow an infinitely long tail? That, however, is a red herring. The argument can be retooled only to suppose that I necessarily have many cells and I actually have a finite number. But, second, and more seriously, is it really true that there is no possible world where I exist with only a few cells? In fact, perhaps, I once did exist with only a few cells in this world!

Similarly about (5). It’s clear that right now I can survive the loss of my least important cell. But it is far from clear that this is a necessary truth. It could well be metaphysically possible that I be reduced to some state of non-redundancy where every cell is necessary for my existence, where removal of any cell severs an organic pathway essential to life. I would be in a very different state in such a case than I am right now. But it’s far from clear that this is impossible.

Perhaps, though, the modality here isn’t metaphysical modality, but something like nomic modality. Maybe it’s nomically impossible for me to be in a state where every cell is non-redundant. Maybe, but even that’s not clear. And it’s also harder to say that the removal of the least important cell has to (in the nomic necessity sense) be nomically possible. Couldn’t it be that nomically the only way the least important cell could be removed would be by cutting into me in ways that would kill me?

Furthermore, once we’ve made our modal complications to the argument, it becomes clear that of the three contradictory premises (1), (4) and (5), premise (1) is by far the most probable. Premise (1) is a claim about my own existence, which seems pretty evident to me, and is only a claim about how things actually are now. Premises (4) and (5) depend on difficult modal details, on how things are in other worlds, and on metaphysical intuitions that are surely more fraught than those in the cogito.

(One of the things I’ve discovered by teaching metaphysics to undergraduates, with a focus on formulating logically valid arguments, is that sometimes numbered arguments in published work by smart people are actually quite some distance from validity, and it’s hard to see exactly how to make them valid without modal logic.)

Existence and causation

Start with these plausible claims:

  1. If x causes y, the causal relation between x and y is not posterior to the existence of y.

  2. A relation between two entities is never prior to the existence of either entity.

So, the causal relation between x and y is neither prior nor posterior to the existence of y.

But the causal relation is, obviously, intimately tied to the existence of y. What is this tie? The best answer I know is that the causal relation is the existence of y or an aspect of that existence: for y to exist is at least in part for y to have been caused by x.

Substances and their existences

I used to think that:

  1. x is a substance just in case  <x exists> is not grounded in any fact about any other entity other than x.

But it is plausible that a finite creature’s existing is its being created. And that Alice is created seems to be grounded in God creating Alice, which seems to be a fact about God.

There is a nice response to this worry. On standard medieval views, creation is a one-way relation. When God creates Alice, there is a relation of being-created-by-God in Alice but no relation of creating-Alice in God. We can say, then, that in an important sense the fact that God creates Alice is not a fact about God, but about Alice, where we say that a fact is about x provided the fact is in part a fact of x’s existing or there being some property or relation in x.

It’s interesting that the very plausible account (1) of substance combined with a theistically plausible view that the esse of a finite thing is its being-created yields the rather abstruse one-way relation thesis.

This line of thought does not, however, fit well with the claim that I made in The Principle of Sufficient Reason that for a caused entity, its esse is its being caused. For Alice is also caused by her parents. And while divine causation may be a one-way relation, it seems unlikely that creaturely causation is.

There are three ways out of this worry. (i) We could say that creaturely causation is also a one-way relation. (ii) We could say that I was slightly wrong, and for a caused entity, its esse is its being primarily caused, i.e., caused by God. (iii) We could modify (1) to:

  1. x is a substance just in case  < x exists> has a grounding in a fact that is neither about any entity other than x nor grounded in a fact about any entity other than x.

For we can then say that while Alice’s being-caused is grounded in her parents’ activity, which is a fact about her parents, it is also grounded in God’s causing Alice, which is not a fact about God in the sense of being grounded in a relation or property of God’s.

I like both (ii) and (iii). What is especially attractive about (ii) is that if the esse of Alice is her being caused, then the esse of Alice is highly disjunctive, being multiply grounded—in God’s causing Alice, in her parents causing her, in her parents’ gametes causing her, maybe even in her grandparents’ causing her, etc. But it doesn’t seem right to say that Alice’s esse is highly disjunctive. So a focus on primary causation seems attractive. And I think—but without a careful examination—that the arguments in Principle of Sufficient Reason work with that modification still.

Thomism and presentism

According to Thomism:

  1. That I exist is explanatorily prior to all the other facts about me.

Obviously:

  1. That yesterday I safely crossed a street is explanatorily prior to the fact that I presently exist.

  2. If presentism is true, the fact that I presently exist is the same fact as that I exist.

  3. There are no circles of explanatorily priority.

  4. That yesterday I safely crossed a street is a fact about me.

It logically follows from these that:

  1. Presentism is not true.

(For from 2 and 3, if presentism is true, that I safely crossed a street is prior to the fact that I exist. But by 1 and 5 that I exist is prior to the fact that I exist. If presentism is true, we thus have a priority circle, so by 4, we don’t have presentism.)

What I think is wrong with the proof of the Barcan formula

The Barcan formula says:

  1. xϕ → □∀xϕ.

The Barcan formula is dubious. Suppose, for instance, that the only things in existence are a, b and c, and let ϕ(x) say that x = a ∨ x = b ∨ x = c. Then the left-hand-side of (0) is true, since necessarily a = a, b = b and c = c. However the right-hand-side is not true, since it’s false that necessarily everything is one of a, b and c: even if there are only three things in existence, there could be more.

The Barcan formula can be proved in the Simplest Quantified Modal Logic (SQML) with S5.

Recently, a correspondent asked what I do about the fact that I accept S5 and yet presumably reject the Barcan formula. This gnawed at me for a bit, and I thought about the proof of the Barcan formula as presented by Menzel. I think I now have a pretty firm idea of where I get off the boat in the proof, and it has nothing to do with S5.

The first two steps of the proof are:

  1. xϕ → □ϕ (quantifier axiom)

  2. □(∀xϕ→□ϕ) (from (1) by Necessitation).

Claim (1) is hard to dispute. But claim (2) isn’t right. Let ϕ be the formula D(x), where D(x) says that x is divine. Then (2) says:

  1. □(∀xD(x)→□D(x)).

By Generalization, which I think is hard to dispute, we get:

  1. x□(∀xD(x)→□D(x)).

But (3) is false. For let a be me. Then (3) says the following about me:

  1. □(∀xD(x)→□D(a)),

i.e., that in the possible worlds where everything is necessarily divine, I am necessarily divine. But that’s just false. For I don’t exist in possible worlds where everything is necessarily divine. Only God exists in those worlds.

So I think the problem lies with Necessitation, which is the rule that says that theorems are necessary and yields (2) from (1). Here is my story as to what the problem with Necessitation is. Some logics have presuppositions. We can, for instance, imagine a theological logic that presupposes the existence of God. If a logic has presuppositions, then unless we have established that the presuppositions are themselves necessary truths, we are not entitled to assume that the theorems of that logic are themselves necessary. Instead, all that we are entitled to assume that the theorems of that logic necessarily follow from the presuppositions.

Now, infamously, classical logic has an existential presupposition: all the names and terms are names and terms for existing things. Because it has an existential presupposition, unless we have established the necessity of the existential presupposition, all we can say about theorems is that they necessarily follow from the existential presupposition, not that they are actually necessary.

Assuming we have a name for me in the language, it is indeed a theorem of classical logic that if everything is necessarily divine, then I am necessarily divine. But we cannot conclude that it is necessary that if everything is necessarily divine, then I am necessarily divine. For that would imply that in the world where only God exists, I would exist as well and be God. Rather, all we can conclude is that:

  1. It is necessary that: if I and all the other things whose existence is presupposed exist, then if everything is necessarily divine, I am necessarily divine.

And that is trivially true, because in the worlds where everything is necessarily divine, I don’t exist.

An omnipotence principle from Aquinas

Aquinas believes that it follows from omnipotence that:

  1. Any being that depends on creatures can be created by God without its depending on creatures.

But, plausibly:

  1. If x and y are a couple z, then z depends on x and y.

  2. If x and y are a couple z, then necessarily if z exists, z depends on x and y.

  3. Jill and Joe Biden are a couple.

  4. Jill and Joe Biden are creatures.

But this leads to a contradiction. By (4), we have a couple, call it “the Bidens”, consisting by Jill and Joe Biden, and by (2) that couple depends on Jill and Joe Biden. By (1) and (5), God can create the Bidens without either Jill or Joe Biden. But that contradicts (3).

So, Aquinas’ principle (1) implies that there are no couples. More generally, it implies that there are no beings that necessarily depend on other creatures. All our artifacts would be like that: they would depend on parts. Thus, Aquinas’ principle implies there are no artifacts.

Thomists are sometimes tempted to say that artifacts, heaps and the like are accidental beings. But the above argument shows that that won’t do. God’s power extends to all being, and whatever being creatures can bestow, God can bestow absent the creatures. If the accidental beings are beings, God can create them without their parts. But a universe with a heap and yet nothing heaped is absurd. So, I think, we need to deny the existence of accidental beings.

If we lean on (1) further, we get an argument for survivalism. Either Socrates depends on his body or not. If Socrates does not depend on his body, he can surely survive without his body after death. But if Socrates does depend on his body, then by (1) God can create Socrates disembodied, since Socrates’ body is a creature. But if God can create Socrates disembodied, surely God can sustain Socrates disembodied, and so Socrates can survive without his body. In fact, the argument does not apply merely to humans but to every embodied being: bacteria, trees and wolves can all survive death if God so pleases.

Things get even stranger once we get to the compositional structure of substances. Socrates presumably depends on his act of being. But Socrates’ act of being is itself a creature. Thus, by (1), God could create Socrates without creating Socrates’ act of being. Then Socrates would exist without having any existence.

I like the sound of (1), but the last conclusion seems disastrous. Perhaps, though, the lesson we get from this is that the esse of Socrates isn’t an entity? Or perhaps we need to reject (1)?

Eternalism and future non-existence

I go back and forth on whether this is a strong argument against eternalism:

  1. Given eternalism, it is guaranteed to be eternally the case that one exists simpliciter, even if one’s existence comes to an end.

  2. Given eternalism, one’s existence coming to an end is just finitude in the forwards temporal direction.

  3. If it is guaranteed to be eternally the case that one exists simpliciter, finitude in the forwards temporal direction would not be something to be dreaded.

  4. So, given eternalism, one’s existence coming to an end would not be something to be dreaded. (1–3)

  5. One’s existence coming to an end would be something to be dreaded.

  6. So, eternalism is false. (4–5)

(As a theist, I think our existence does not come to an end. Hence the hypothetical “would” in (5).)

The intuition behind (3) is that finitude in the forwards temporal direction, given that one exists simpliciter, is akin to finitude in the backwards temporal direction or along a spatial axis, and these are clearly not to be dreaded.

But, on reflection, I think the eternalist can make very good sense of the appropriate attitudes to an end of existence. Consider this: If I were threatened with amputation of the part of me below the head—i.e., with being reduced to a head in a life-support tank—that would be something to be dreaded. It would be something to be dreaded, because the kind of functioning that is natural to human beings requires the below-the-head portion of the body. On the other hand, we could imagine sessile aliens that are very much like human heads, and there is nothing dreadful about the life of these aliens. These aliens’ lack of the below-the-head functioning normal humans enjoy would not be a deprivation.

Thus, human flourishing has spatial requirements: we require all of our body to fully flourish. Similarly, human flourishing has a robust temporal requirement: it requires an eternal future. This is because of the nature of human flourishing. Plausibly, human flourishing has a drive to infinity, requiring endless growth knowledge of reality and relationship with others. (This is probably not the whole story, but it will do for this post.) But our flourishing does not require spatial unlimitedness—on the contrary, there is a maximum size along each spatial axis such that a human being that is too big along that axis is not a fully flourishing human being.

We are four-dimensional beings, and we require a specific four-dimensional shape to flourish: a shape that is not too small and not too large in the three spatial directions and that is infinite in the forwards temporal direction. A finite future is a terrible truncation.

Now not every animal is like humans. Brute animals do not require an eternal future to be fully flourishing: they can achieve complete flourishing in a finite life, say because the lack the drive to the infinite that humans have. If we were like that, it would not be appropriate for us to dread future non-existence. Not being inclined to dread future non-existence is hard for us to imagine, because the drive to the infinite arises from such deep features of our nature. But philosophically, it makes perfect sense to think that there could be beings that can complete their flourishing in a finite compass.

The eternalist’s seeing a future end of existence of a human as a terrible truncation, but as not necessarily a terrible truncation in a non-human, seems very compelling. On the other hand, I think it is harder for a presentist to make sense of the difference here. Future non-existence seems really bad, because future non-existence on presentism would imply that eventually one will not exist simpliciter, and that seems dreadful. But the dreadfulness of this seems to have to do with the value of existence simpliciter, and not with our nature. Thus, we may have a story as to why it would make sense for a presentist to dread an end to existence, but that story proves too much: for that story would apply even if the presentist were the kind of non-human that doesn’t need an infinite future for flourishing.

Existential inertia and relativity

According to the doctrine of existential inertia, objects have a metaphysical tendency to continue existing absent interference. Existential inertia differs from ordinary physical inertia, in that existential inertia is supposed to come from the metaphysics of time and existence, while physical inertia comes from the laws of nature.

Let’s now imagine that Bob is a physical object that pops into existence at some point z0 in spacetime, in a universe with nothing that would annihilate Bob (and with Bob lacking any means of self-annihilation). Then according to existential inertia, Bob will continue to exist. But what does that mean in a relativistic setting? Times correspond to spacelike hypersurfaces. A time is future with respect to z0 provided that it corresponds to a spacelike hypersurface intersecting the future light-cone centered on z0. Thus, what we get is:

  1. If Bob exists at z0, then for every spacelike hypersurface H that intersects the future light-cone of z0, Bob exists at some location or other on H.

This is strange on two counts. First, it seems odd that for every spacelike hypersurface that intersects the future light-cone of z0, we have some sort of a metaphysical guarantee that Bob is somewhere on it—not at any particular place, mind you, but somewhere or other on it. Maybe it doesn’t seem as odd to you as it does to me, though.

Perhaps more seriously, however, (1) describes a metaphysical tendency that makes crucial reference to the speed of light.

In fact, (1) seems to somehow make speed-of-light limits have some sort of metaphysical force. For suppose that Bob faster-than-light travels from z0 to some point z1 outside the light-cone of z0. Then after that episode of faster-than-light travel, Bob could continue living a normal slower-than-light life, while violating (1) with respect to a number of hypersurfaces (that intersect the future cone of z0). Thus, while violations of existential inertia are supposed to come from destructive powers, a violation of (1) can come from simple faster-than-light travel.

If we suppose that the metaphysics of time requires a privileged reference frame, the above problems disappear. They also disappear if we think that objects come along with a privileged internal time sequence, and that existential inertia is defined with respect to that internal time sequence.

Existence

In his famous critique of the ontological argument, Kant said that existence is not a property. Frege and Russell gave a very influential response to Kant (though not framed as such): the existence of an object is not a property of the existent object, but it is a second-order property of an abstract object. Thus, the existence of Biden is the second-order property of being instantiated possessed not by Biden himself but by the abstract object Bidenness.

But now consider this very plausible principle:

  1. The existence of an object is explanatorily prior to all the (other) properties of that object.

The parenthetical “other” is included to make (1) acceptable both to Frege-Russell and to “pre-Kantians” who think existence is a property of the existent object.

But combining (1) with the Frege-Russell account leads to an explanatory priority regress:

  • Biden’s maleness is posterior to Biden’s existence.

  • Biden’s existence is Bidenness’s being instantiated.

  • Bidenness’s being instantiated is posterior to Bidenness’s existence.

  • Bidenness’s existence is Bidennessness’s being instantiated.

  • Bidennessness’s being instantiated is posterior to Bidennessness’s existence.

  • Bidennessness’s existence is Bidennessnessness’s being instantiated.

How can we arrest this regress? A natural move is to restrict the Frege-Russell view of existence to contingent entities. Thus, Biden’s existence is the instantiation of Bidenness, but Bidenness is a necessary entity, and its existence is not the instantiation of some further entity. Indeed, perhaps, the pre-Kantian view holds of Bidenness: Bidenness’s existence could just be a property of Bidenness.

Note that if the pre-Kantian view holds of necessary beings, then Kant’s critique of the ontological argument falls apart, since God is a necessary being.

But let’s think through the pre-Kantian view a little bit. Suppose that x is an object and e is its existence, and suppose e is a property of x. But how can x possess e without already existing prior to having e? (I.e., surely, (1) is true with the parenthetical “other” removed.) There seems to be one possible move here: perhaps x = e. That would be a view on which some objects are identical with their own existence—a view very much like St. Thomas’s, who held that God, and God alone, was identical with his own existence.

So, interestingly, thinking the Frege-Russell view through leads fairly naturally to a view like Thomas’s.

I am attracted to this variant of the Thomistic view:

  1. Uncaused objects are identical with their existence.

  2. The existence of a caused object is its being caused.

The worry that an object cannot possess a property without “already” existing does not appear pressing when the property in question is being caused.

Moreover, we might even more speculatively add:

  1. An object’s being caused is its cause’s causing of it.

On this view, a contingent thing’s existence, like on the Frege-Russell view, is a property of something other than the thing: it is a property of the cause (perhaps an extrinsic property of the cause, when the cause is God, so as not to violate divine simplicity).

Theism and qualia

The following six premises are logically incompatible:

  1. Pain is intrinsically bad.

  2. Pain is a quale.

  3. Qualia are real entities.

  4. All real entities are God or created by God.

  5. God isn’t intrinsically bad.

  6. Nothing created by God is intrinsically bad.

A theist could turn this into an argument against qualia.

I myself am inclined to deny premise (1).

Uncontroversial examples of truthmaking?

I used to think that the following would be an uncontroversial example of truthmaking:

  1. Any elephant is a truthmaker for the proposition that there are elephants.

But that’s only true if every elephant is essentially an elephant, i.e., couldn’t exist without being an elephant. For if x is a truthmaker for p, then x’s existence has to entail p. If Jumbo were accidentally an elephant, then Jumbo’s existence wouldn’t entail that there are elephants.

Given that essentialism is controversial, it seems that if we are to give uncontroversial examples of truthmaking, they have to be something like;

  1. Jumbo is a truthmaker for the proposition that Jumbo exists.

  2. Alice is a truthmaker for the proposition that at least one of Alice, Bob and Carl exists.

Ordinary language and "exists"

In Material Beings, Peter van Inwagen argues that his view that there are no complex artifacts does not contradict (nearly?) universal human belief. The argument is based on his view that the propositions expressed by ordinary statements like “There are three valuable chairs in this room” do not entail the negation of the Radical Claim that there are no artifacts, for such a proposition does not entail that there exist chairs.

I think van Inwagen is right that such ordinary propositions do not entail the negation of the Radical Claim. But he is wrong in thinking that the Radical Claim does not contradict nearly universal human belief. Van Inwagen makes much of the analogy between his view and the Copernican view that the sun does not move. When ordinary people say things like “The sun moved behind the elms”, they don’t contradict Copernicus. Again, I think he is right about the ordinary claims, but nonetheless Copernicus contradicted nearly universal human belief. That was why Copernicus’ view was so surprising, so counterintuitive (cf. some remarks by Merricks on van Inwagen). One can both say that when people prior to Copernicus said “The sun moved behind the elms” they didn’t contradict Copernicanism and that they believed things that entailed that Copernicus is wrong.

People do not assert everything they believe. They typically assert what is salient. What is normally salient is not that the sun actually moved, but that there was a relative motion between the rays pointing to the elms and to the sun. Nonetheless, if ordinary pre-Copernicans said “The sun doesn’t stand still”, they might well have been contradicting the Copernican hypothesis. But rarely in ordinary life is there occasion to say “The sun doesn’t stand still.” Because of the way pragmatics affects semantics (something that van Inwagen apparently agrees on), we simply cannot assume that the proposition expressed by the English sentence “The sun moved behind the elms” entails the proposition expressed by the English sentence “The sun doesn’t stand still.”

Something similar, I suspect, is true for existential language. When an ordinary person says “There are three chairs in the room”, the proposition they express does not contradict the Radical Thesis. But if an ordinary person says things like “Chairs exist” or “Artifacts exist”, they likely would contradict the Radical Thesis, and moreover, these are statements that the ordinary person would be happy to make in denial of the Radical Thesis. But in the ordinary course of life, there is rarely an occasion for such statements.

This is all largely a function of pragmatics than the precise choice of words. Thus, one can say: “Drive slower. Speed limits exist.” The second sentence does not carry ontological commitment to speed limits.

So, how can we check whether an ordinary person believes that tables and chairs exist? I think the best way may be by ostension. We can bid the ordinary person to consider:

  1. People, dogs, trees and electrons.

  2. Holes, shadows and trends.

We remind the ordinary person that we say “There are three holes in this road” or “The shadow is growing”, but of course there are no holes or shadows, while there are people (we might remind them of the Cogito), dogs, trees and (as far as we can tell) electrons. I think any intelligent person will understand what we mean when we say there are no holes or shadows. And then we ask: “So, are tables and chairs in category 2 or in category 1? Do they exist like people, dogs, trees and electrons, or fail to exist like holes, shadows and trends?” This should work even if like Ray Sorensen they disagree that there are no shadows; they will still understand what we meant when we said that there are no shadows, and that’s enough for picking out what we meant by “exist”. To put in van Inwagen’s terms, this brief ostensive discussion will bring intelligent people into the “ontology room”.

And I suspect, though this is an empirical question and I could be wrong, once inducted into the discussion, most people will say that tables and chairs exist (and that they have believed this all along). But, van Inwagen should say, this nearly universal belief is mistaken.

This story neatly goes between van Inwagen’s view that ordinary people don’t believe things patently incompatible with the Radical Theory and Merricks’ view that ordinary poeple contradict the Radical Theory all the time. Ordinary people do believe things patently incompatible with the Radical Theory, but they rarely express these beliefs. Most ordinary “there exist” statements—whether concerning artifacts or people or particles—do not carry ontological commitment, and those of us who accept the Radical Theory normally aren’t lying when we say “There are three chairs in the room”. But the Radical Theory really is radical.

Creation and artifacts

Analytic metaphysics is widely thought a dry discipline. I want to show how it could be used to connect with some deeply devotional theological claims.

Here is a valid argument:

  1. If artifacts exist, we created them.

  2. Only God creates.

  3. So, artifacts don’t exist.

This argument suggests that there can be a deeply devotional connection to the arguments of those metaphysicians, like Merricks and van Inwagen, who deny the existence of artifacts.

Here is another devotional line of thought towards this. Some radical theologians say that God doesn’t exist. They do this to emphasize the radical difference between God and creatures. But they do so wrong. The right way to emphasize this difference is to say that we don’t exist. (Recall how God is said to have told St. Catherine of Siena: “I am he who is and you are she who is not.”) Only God exists.

So, the things that God creates don’t exist—at least not in the same sense in which God exists. By analogy, it should be no surprise if the things we make don’t exist—at least not in the same sense that we exist.

Objection 1: We can create organisms in the lab, and organisms surely exist.

Response: Maybe we should say that their life comes from God.

Objection 2: The distinction between God’s creating and our making is sufficiently accounted for by noting that God creates ex nihilo and we make things out of preexistent stuff.

Response: God doesn’t always create ex nihilo. He made Adam out of the dust of the earth. And anyway the more differences we see between God and us, the more God’s transcendence is glorified.

Anselm's ontological argument

Here is my favorite version of the “existence is not a property” objection to Anselm’s first ontological argument.

It makes no sense to talk of the greatness of a nonexistent being except hypothetically as the greatness it would have if it existed. When we compare the greatness of things, we compare what the things would be like if they existed. Thus, when we say that Thor is greater than Hermes, we mean something like this: if Thor existed, he would be greater than Hermes would be if Hermes existed. And to exist is to exist in reality.

But now take the crucial claim in Anselm’s argument that it is greater for x to exist in mind and in reality than just in mind. This claim is simply false when we understand it in the hypothetical way. For we need to compare the greatness of the x that exists in mind and reality to the greatness that the x that exists only in mind would have if it existed in reality. But that’s the same greatness!

Anselm’s second argument makes no such slip, for it is based on a comparison between contingent and necessary existence, and that comparison survives the criticism.

Theories of time and truth-supervenes-on-being

Truth supervenes on being is the thesis that if two worlds have the same entities, they are otherwise the same. I just realized something that should be pretty obvious. One cannot hold on to all three of the following:

  • A-theory

  • eternalism

  • truth supervenes on being.

For according to eternalism, at any two different times, the facts about what exists are the same. So if truth supervenes on being, at any two different times, all facts are the same—and in particular the facts about what time is objectively present will be the same, which contradicts A-theory.

In other words, just as the best version of presentism (that of Trenton Merricks) rejects that truth supervenes on being, so does the best version of the moving spotlight theory. Moreover, closed-future growing blockers—and, in particular, classical theist growing blockers—will also want to reject that truth supervenes on being since substantive truths about the future won’t supervene on being given growing block.

All this suggests that we are left with only two major theories of time available to those who accept that truth supervenes on being:

  • B-theoretic eternalism

  • growing block with an open future.
