Happy United States Independence Day

I hope you all have a great 4th of July. For those of you who can, be careful with the fireworks.

And please, while you all are going about your day today, seeing friends, cooking out, whatever, take a moment and remember those who have served in our armed forces.  They have made, make, and will ensure that this day's celebrations remain possible. Also, please say a prayer for all those who have made the ultimate sacrifice in protecting our country and our way of life.

a couple of random thoughts on the state of our society.

So, I'm standing in line at the checkout counter at my local grocery store and I glance at the impulse rack. At the top is adult gummi vitamins.  And I'm left wondering why.

Have we sunk that low that we can't, as adults, suck it up and take simple vitamins without lacing them with a spoonful of sugar?  I mean, I can understand children's gummi vitamins.  It's hard enough to explain to a little kid that "because it's good for you" is a valid reason to take something.  But seriously, if we're at the point that we have to do that for supposed adults, maybe it's time to rethink how we're raising people.

I've been hearing a lot of talk from the once and current swamp that is our nation's capital about Immigration reform.  They're talking of this reform.

Now, I thought that if you were going about reforming some system, there was something broken with the system.  But the only thing that I can see that is broken is the government's willingness to enforce it.  The system was not and is not broke.  The system works absolutely as it should.  Which leaves me wondering what they're trying to cover up by calling it reform.

Random Thoughts

The Cricket World Cup roster is composed entirely of countries that used to be colonies of once Great Britain. And they complain about us calling it the Baseball World Series.

All the sports in the US have "ball" in the name. Baseball, Basketball, Football... None of them do outside of the US. Rugby, Cricket, Soccer... Were they worried we wouldn't know it was a sport if they didn't specifiy the ball? (While I'm all for the name Handegg, it just doesn't have the recognition that Football does, no matter how much more accurate and appropriate it is.)

Rugby RAWKS over Handegg, that is all.

Thoughts to Ponder

(Shamelessly stolen from Snig's e-mail)

Good health is merely the slowest possible
Rate at which one can die.

Give a person a fish and you feed them for a day,
Teach a person to use the Internet and they won't bother you for weeks.

Some people are like a Slinky ...
Not really good for anything, but you
Still can't help but smile when
You shove them down the stairs.

Health nuts are going to feel stupid someday,
Lying in hospitals, dying of nothing.

All of us could take a lesson from the weather.
It pays no attention to criticism.

Why does a slight tax increase cost you $200.00,
And a substantial tax cut saves you $30.00?

The right of...

The right of the people to keep and bear arms for self-defense and defense of the homeland shall never be infringed, limited, rescinded, interfered with, or prohibited by any decree of law, decision by court, or policy by the executive branch or any of its agencies. And this time, we mean it.

Tis the season.

Okay, it's rounding out to THAT time of year again. So, as I annually do, please accept the following.

To all my liberal acquaintances;

Please accept with no obligation, implied or implicit my best wishes for an environmentally conscious, socially responsible, low stress, non-addictive, gender neutral, celebration of the winter solstice holiday(tm), practiced within the most enjoyable traditions of the religious persuasion of your choice, or secular practices of your choice, with respect for the religious/secular persuasions and/or traditions of others, or their choice not to practice religious or secular traditions at all . . . and a fiscally successful, personally fulfilling, and medically uncomplicated recognition of the onset of the generally accepted calendar year 2010, but not without due respect for the calendars of choice of other cultures whose contributions to society have helped make America great, (not to imply that America is necessarily greater than any other country or is the only "AMERICA" in the western hemisphere), and without regard to the race, creed, color, age, physical ability, religious faith, choice of computer platform, or sexual orientation of the wishee.

By accepting this greeting, you are accepting these terms: This greeting is subject to clarification or withdrawal. It is freely transferable with no alteration to the original greeting. It implies no promise by the wisher to actually implement any of the wishes for her/himself or others, and is void where prohibited by law, and is revocable at the sole discretion oft he wisher. This wish is warranted to perform as expected within the usual application of good tidings for a period of one year, or until the issuance of a subsequent holiday greeting, whichever comes first, and warranty is limited to replacement of this wish or issuance of a new wish at the sole discretion of the wisher

And to all my conservative friends.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

Sign-o-the-times

While picking up batteries today, I noticed that the fun sized candy bars had gotten smaller.

Sign of the times or are people just more easily amused?

New Job...

I think I've figured it out. Tell me if I'm close. ahem....

My fellow Americans.

I don't want to run (insert industry here)

I inherited (insert mess here) from the previous administration.

It's not about me. It's about (insert current legacy media darlings here)

And to DO SOMETHING about it I plan to (insert socialist agenda here)

Because:

Emotionally based reason

Emotionally based reason

...

Emotionally based reason

Then ramble for a bit without really explaining anything or understanding anything.

I wonder if I can get a job working for the teleprompter?

Random Thoughts

On a gunboard I frequent on IRC we were discussing the availability or lack thereof of ammo. One of the regulars was whining about hoarders and blah blah blah.

I had to say the definition of hoarding anything is:

If someone buys it before I can, it's hoarding.
If I buy it first, it's just stockpiling.

Simple, no?

Offpilot

is off.

There's a park southeast of me that I want to check out. It has a nice hiking loop.

Slow day in Whoville.

Not much happened today. I ran my gun shop circuit. Picked up a new hand loader for the .308, some bullets and polisher and ogled a rather nice Mauser (carbine length). I'm about 2/3 done tumbling my .45 brass and if I can ever find some IMR3031 I'll load up some rounds using the A-Max and another set using the Nossler HP. Someday, I'll do a range report on those and the AR, I promise.

Are you sitting down?

North Carolina has Ammo! .45ACP, .223, .380, 9mm! Compared to the ammo dessert that was the DFW area last weekend, woohoo!

Leading man material....

Your result for The Classic Leading Man Test...

Humphrey Bogart

You scored 55% Tough, 10% Roguish, 29% Friendly, and 10% Charming!

You're the original man of honor, rough and tough but willing to stick your neck out when you need to, despite what you might say to the contrary. You're a complex character full of spit and vinegar, but with a soft heart and a tender streak that you try to hide. There's usually a complicated dame in the picture, someone who sees the real you behind all the tough talk and can dish it out as well as you can. You're not easy to get next to, but when you find the right partner, you're caring and loyal to a fault. A big fault. But you take it on the chin and move on, nursing your pain inside and maintaining your armor...until the next dame walks in. Or possibly the same dame, and of all the gin joints in all the world, it had to be yours. Co-stars include Ingrid Bergman and Lauren Bacall, hot chicks with problems.

Find out what kind of classic dame you'd make by taking the
Classic Dames Test.

I learned something new today...

Apparently, of all the types of elves out there. Santa Clause frowns the most on "Sexy Elf". I'm not mentioning any names... (Mostly 'cause redheads shoot first....), but someone got fired by Santa for being too... adult... an elf one Xmas.

Told ya I'd blog you about it.

Food for... thought?

Since it's friday and that means it's bad-for-you food night. I made nachos. Nachos Supreme to be precise. I took a short cut and used hamburger rather than a pulled roast. But there were diced roma tomatoes, diced sweet yellow onion, black beans, jalapenos, black olives. I made the basic cheese sauce. You know the one, butter, flour, salt, pepper, milk and a ton of cheese.

A nice red ale to cap it off and I'm in tummy heaven. And you might as well head over to Bear's or Brigid's. They'll have made something truely exquisite and they'll have pics too.
