One of the killer features demoed at Google I/O, on Android 2.2, was the OS’ ability to install pushed applications right from Google’s Market website. Unfortunately, Google has yet to update the Android Market (or its website) with this functionality, however the underlying code that makes this possible is ready to go in Froyo. AppBrain, “a website which makes sense out of the high number of apps available in the Android market,” has developed its own application titled Fast Web Installer that will provide this functionality for your Android 2.2 device right now. Install and authorize the app, visit appbrain.com, click install, and you’re done. The client will fully install requested applications without user interaction; applications still have to be uninstalled directly from the handset. Now, AppBrain’s utility may be short lived — since Google will definitely be rolling out the exact same service — but if you have a 2.2 device, and can’t wait for this feature give AppBrain Fast Web Installer a shot.

Nexus One Froyo update gets update, FRF91 available OTA

A few days ago, Google officially released Android 2.2 (Froyo) Build FRF85 to its army of Nexus One owners. Yesterday, Google began making a small update to 2.2 — labeled with build number FRF91 — available via an over-the-air download. The update, which weighs in at around 2 MB, is labeled as being “security fixes”; no further information is available. If you get the OTA notice on your N1 let us know if you find anything visually different, and if you don’t feel like waiting for the OTA push, you can always grab the files here.

1.4 million Nokia Ovi Maps downloads since the service went free

More than 1.4 million users have downloaded Nokia Ovi Maps since January 21 – when Nokia decided to offer free walk and drive navigation.
1 million downloads were provided within a week from launch, and now Nokia’s serving one download per second.
Most users are installing Ovi Maps with free navigation on phones like Nokia 5800 XpressMusic, Nokia 5230, Nokia N97, Nokia N97 mini and Nokia E72.
According to Nokia, the top five countries downloading Ovi Maps are China, Italy, the UK, Germany and Spain.
As previously announced, all new Nokia GPS-enabled smartphones launched starting March will include Ovi Maps with free navigation, plus free access to Michelin and Lonely Planet travel guides.
Although this sounds great, it looks like the upcoming smartphones will be a bit more expensive than they would have been if free navigation had not been included. Tera Ojanpera, Nokia’s Executive Vice President Services, recently told Reuters that Nokia believes customers are “willing to pay more for a phone that included a navigation package” and that “most of the additional revenue was expected from the pricier phones.”
So free isn’t exactly free, since you have to pay more for a phone. But that’s still OK.

Since WordPress is one of the world’s most popular blogging platforms and Android will soon be one of the world’s most popular mobile OSes, it was only a matter of time until an official WordPress app for Android would be developed.
Well, the official WordPress Android app is here now to let you manage your WordPress blog(s) directly on your Android smartphone.
With WodrPress for Android you can configure and manage multiple blogs, create and edit posts, create and edit pages, moderate and reply to comments, and get notified when new comments appear.
The WordPress Android app uses the source code of wpToGo – which will be discontinued. To download the new app you must visit the Android Market, or scan this code.
Beta testers for future builds of WordPress for Android are needed – more details here.

DirecTV's DVR Scheduler app may have just arrived on Android and WebOS devices but it's been around on iPhone for nearly a year and has now been downloaded by over 1 million users. Next up? The ability to order PPV without a home phone line, recommendations and ratings, and even direct to mobile video trailer streaming. Unfortunately not mentioned? When we'll see the promised Blackberry edition. Still, congratulations DirecTV.

Nokia’s Gig Finder Symbian touch app lets you find live music events

The Nokia Beta Labs team has launched a new Symbian application, called Gig Finder and aimed at helping users to easily discover nearby live music events.
Apart from letting you find events and providing directions, the new app also allows you to purchase tickets and quickly share the info you find via Facebook, email or SMS. Moreover, Gig Finder provides music recommendations (based on your searches) and includes links to download music via the Nokia Music Store.
The Gig Finder application is compatible only with Symbian S60 5th Edition (i.e. Nokia’s touchscreen devices: X6, N97, N97 Mini, 5800, 5530 and 5230). Also, note that, for the moment, the app includes info about events in the US, Canada, UK and Ireland only.

HTC HD2 Messaging Update

The HTC HD2 has been updated once again. This time it is to do with messaging. The official description reads:-
This update for HTC HD2 messaging lets you reach out to your friends and family with instant notifications. Keeping in touch has always been very important, and this update delivers just that: fast and reliable SMS messaging.
Some users have complained about not being notified audibly or visually when a new SMS was received.

Update: Following on from the Camera Update, and Messaging Update for the HTC HD2, HTC are back once again with another hotfix to improve the performance of the HD2.
This time is addresses an issue with SD Card Storage card capacity. It is not totally clear as to what this Hotfix does.
This update for HTC HD2 further extends support of the SD Storage Capability. Taking pictures with your 5 Megapixel lens and dual LED flash can only truly be appreciated at the maximum quality, and now with this update, you will be able to appreciate how much more you can store in your 8GB or more SD Card.
Is it enabling the device to take larger size SD Cards (16/32Gb+), or is is making some registry tweaks, which have improved the quality of camera images, decreasing compression and increasing file size?
Ill apply the update and see if I can work it out.
Note: This update is only applicable to Camera versions equal to Version 6.26 (Build 1921.1625), or lower. You can check the Camera Version under HOME > Start Menu > Camera> Settings > Advanced > Page 5> About> Version information.
