eclipse

ok so ive tried several time to get eclipse running on my ubuntu instalation
normally i end up with java errors, library errors and best of all NOTHING happening

the ubuntu software center gives me a very old version and getting a newer version has been a ball ache
my linux foo is on the decline a little. the old versions are great accept all the documentation thats helping me is done using the latest versions of eclipse

using eclipse and the android development tools under windows is SLOW! i feel very sorry for the current second years doing their group project on android
admittedly im running in  a VM with 5Gb RAM but the Android virtual device was taking in excess of 20min to load, i dont know an exact time because i kept giving up aroung 20min and it never once managed to boot

nayway, my linux foo is weak however my other half has epic linux foo and i begged him to get the latest version of eclipse (indigo) working under ubuntu…. 15min later victory!
another 30min to install and set up the sdk and adts

run my test program again and my android virtual device boots and loads the application in under 30seconds 😀

i now have a development environment that works and has access to the full resources of my laptop. have a feelign that progress on my project is likly to increase 😀

SourceForge

After having a look at Github and SourceForge, I’m going to be using SourceForge.

SourceForge is nice, shiny and doesn’t appear to have any nasty reputations.
It has been mentioned by several coders that GitHub has lead to joining unwanted projects, and receiving abuse from misc users. This isnt something i like the idea of so…. SourceForge FTW

SourceForge is also rather nice that it gives me several additional tools such as a Forum, Bug Tracking and Wiki.

At the moment there isn’t a lot on there but I will be adding all my current documentation over this afternoon and weekend.

By the end of next week I hope/plan to have some code up, although I make no promises to its quality

Settle Sunday

Well the last month has been a little hectic from start to finish and I’ve finally had a lovely relaxing weekend.
Breakfast in bed, retail therapy and baking life is good 😀

On the note of baking here’s the pictures of the finished master piece.

The recipe came from the Humming Bird Bakery. My mum has their book and well its amazing, if anyone wanted to buy it for me they would be welcome to borrow it at their pleasure 😛

Anyway yes, a weekend of pleasure is very nearly over, and after and earlier screw up with Eclipse I should probably do some catch up work.

The Eclipse website leaves a little to be desired and as much as I understand Androids Vagueness when installing the SDK etc, it would be useful if
A) Eclipse actually told you what their latest release is
B) Android had a section for those who didn’t have Eclipse pre-installed with details like we advice you use this Eclipse for Java Developers Edition

With any luck installing the correct release eg Indigo instead of Gallieo, the instructions found on the Android site will hopefully make a little more sense.

Nothing

Well yes the title about says it all, this week i have achieved nothing.

In my defence FLU, damn you freshers. With a lot of light and sound sensitivity to boot, so coding from bed wasn’t even an option.

On the bright side i am now feeling a lot better if a little hungry 😛

Oh tell a lie, ive managerd to get my prject outline to its second draft, and had it proof read, now time to make amendments, put it all into a lovely LaTeX template and hand it in next wednesday.

oh and thanks to my lovely supervisor Rich Shipman, i now have the clangers, bagpuss and ivor the engine on dvd  😀

Time Leak

So at the moment I’m taking a little break from the technicalities of my project, my little break is proving to be almost as annoying as getting Eclipse to work.

I’m currently writing a detailed requirement specification complete with acceptance test for each little task, this is where the time leak is occurring.

One of my modules, Agile Methodology, has spent the last week telling us that humans are poor at estimating time! Well I’m now discovering this first hand.

How can it be so hard to break down generic tasks into simpler smaller ones, just breaking down my “too generic” tasks is taking forever, deciding on suitable tests that show i have done the work and typing this all up in to a lovely little table is taking forever and a day!

Think I might have chosen too much work to do this week, might need to scale back the amount I try to achieve per week.
This weeks aims are :

Creating 3 UML diagrams (Use-Case, Class and Database)
Finishing Project Proposal and LaTeXifying it
Redoing my Gantt chart and accompanying requirement specification
Justifying Java as a programming language and SQLlite and as a database
and
Writing Hello World to run on the devices already mentioned

Seems so simple till you try to do any of it 😛

Android SDK + Eclipse

So… One-Post is an android application, that gives me only one option for development:

The Ecplise IDE with all the Android plugins (SDK, ADT)

This seems fairly simple but not really
If you go to Eclipse which version am i meant to download?
The Android developers site does have a step by step guide and this is very helpful, but simple things like “we advise you download x version of eclipse” would have been helpful

My challenge today is to make sure that i have set up the ADT correctly and that my version of ecplise will support development for the following environments:

Sony Ericsson X10 running 2.1
HTC Senstation running 2.3.4
HTC Desire running 2.3
Galaxy S2 running 2.3.1
and an
EE Transformer running 3.1

More updates later on whether this works, if i have the right components installed, and by friday, if i can get hello world to run on each device.

Blogging Ahhhh

Well this is my second attempt at a blog, I lost my previous one.
Guess what now I need a blog I cant find my old one, ahhh well!

So yes…
Q. Why do I suddenly need a blog?
A. For my dissertation.

Q. What is my dissertation?
A. One-Post, an Android application to aggregate updates to various micro/macro blogging sites automatically.

So for those who are still a little confused.
Most people use twitter and facebook and similar. To update everyone you know you have to login to each site and update that site (OK i know simplified alot)
One post aims to do the logging in and posting to each site for you, so that you dont have to go around typing the same thing over and over 😛

One post will with any luck be aggregating posts to:

Facebook
Twitter
AudioBoo
LinkedIn
Wordpress Blog
Flickr
Twitpic

A lot of work to do, but the above list covers the most popular micro blogging sites as well as the most commonly used blogging format.
It also covers each aspect of micro blogging from photos to text and all the way over to the mythical audio.

One-Post is going to be an open source application and I hope to have a release candidate available asap. This will be open for all of my friends to test and for anyone who is interested in it to test. Keep your eyes open.

I don’t ask for anyone to pay, I like free software :P, but feedback will be much appreciated in all formats.
