Helicopters Rescue Nepal Flood Survivors, With More Than 1,400 Still Missing

Officials said hundreds were killed in Nepal and Tibet. Our reporters flew with rescuers to remote areas where shocked survivors described a torrent of mud.

The Nepali Army’s search and rescue base at Dhunche was packed with army personnel and survivors they rescued. The area had no electricity or phone networks, so soldiers and other rescuers used military radios to communicate.

The helicopters taking off or landing around every 15 minutes ferried injured people rescued from villages and towns nearby the base or rations of dried food like instant noodles.

Dawa Lama, who lives in a village by Nepal’s border with the Tibetan region of China, told me a wave of muddy water slammed into his home on Wednesday, carrying away his wife and daughters.

Lama said he was able to outrun the water by climbing up the valley, but his family was not. “They all died and I lived,” he said, adding he still clung to hope they had survived.

The Nepali Army has been running search and rescue operations in Dhunche, a town in one of the worst-hit areas. By mid-afternoon, around 500 survivors had been rescued.

I flew over the Bhotekoshi River in a Nepali Army helicopter to see the devastation. Scars on hillsides showed that in some places, the river had risen as high as 200 meters.
