Sentence Formation

Last Updated : 29 Nov, 2025

Sentence Formation can be defined as a type of test where you are asked to arrange a group of jumbled-up words to form a meaningful sentence. It is one of the basic types of verbal ability tests.

Types of Sentence

Sentences can be structured in four main ways:

1. Simple Sentence

It contains one independent clause.

Example: The sun shines brightly.

2. Compound Sentence

It combines two independent clauses with a conjunction (and, but, or).

Example: I wanted to go out, but it started raining.

3. Complex Sentence

It has one independent clause + one dependent clause.

Example: Although she was tired, she finished her work.

4. Compound-Complex Sentence

It combines multiple independent clauses + at least one dependent clause.

Example: I went to the market, and while I was there, I met an old friend.

Tips and Tricks to Master Sentence Formation

There are certain rules or tricks you should be aware of if you want to ace the sentence formation test:

1. The first step is to find the opening word of the sentence. To achieve this, try to get a basic idea about the sentence and what it is trying to say.
2. After identifying the opening word, find the closing word. Half the work is done when you correctly identify both the opening and closing words.
3. The final task is identify the pronouns, adjectives and verbs and arrange them in a sentence which is grammatically correct and gives a proper meaning.
