oh, well let me help you there. we usually teach this to kids between the age of 4 and 6, but better late then never.
so you check the corresponding lane for incoming cars. if there are none, or you see they are clearly slowing down in a way that they will safely stop before they reach you, this direction is safe and you can repeat the process with the lane in the other direction.
if both directions were declared safe, you can cross the street. if there is a car whose driver is clearly not slowing down because they are trying to kill you, they don't see you, or it is impossible for them to stop in the remaining distance between them and the crossing due to laws of physics, then you DO NOT ATTEMPT to cross the street and wait for the car to pass.
if you are struggling with some other skills because you weren't paying attention in the kindergarten, don't hesitate to ask!
