I’m a big Civ IV fan, and I’d like to download all of the Sample Game threads on this Civfanatics site: https://forums.civfanatics.com/threads/sample-game-directory.258697/

I’d like to have all of the posts and images from each sample game, each of which is a forum thread with multiple pages, posts, and images hosted from elsewhere.

Here’s the wget function I tried (which I mostly stole from here https://letswp.justifiedgrid.com/download-discourse-forum-wget/) :
wget –mirror –page-requisites –convert-links –adjust-extension –compression=auto –reject-regex “/search” –no-if-modified-since –no-check-certificate –execute robots=off –random-wait –wait=1 –user-agent="Googlebot/2.1 (+http://www.google.com/bot.html)” –no-cookies -r https://forums.civfanatics.com/threads/sample-game-directory.258697/

It gave me an index file that was way too small, and while it did take me to the index page, seemingly locally on my system, clicking on any of the forum threads took me to the actual website instead of a local mirror. Also I don’t think any of the images (which are linked from elsewhere) downloaded.

I’m mostly just interested in a subset of the sample games, so I’d be fine downloading each sample game forum post separately, but I haven’t been able to do that either.

Any help would be appreciated!

If you use FreeTube, you may be aware that it’s really been struggling with SABR reload requests lately. If you’re not familiar, what basically ends up happening is that YouTube will send a request to load an ad or whatever, and sometimes FreeTube will end up in a loop where it keeps reloading over and over.

In any case, FreeTube has an option to view videos in an external player, and this often helps whenever FreeTube itself is acting up. However, one big problem I have with this is that external video players like SMPlayer won’t grab subtitles when you feed them a YouTube URL.

What I’m wondering is if I can set up SMPlayer to automatically grab the subtitle files for the YouTube videos I watch. I imagine MPV can do it, since it’s very scriptable, and I do use MPV as my SMPlayer backend.

I’m using EndeavourOS with the latest KDE Plasma.

GNOME Boxes lead developer Felipe Borges has been overhauling the application with a major rewrite and today announced the new beta release. GNOME Boxes has migrated to using the GTK4 toolkit and libadwaita. The new GNOME Boxes code can also handle installing Microsoft Windows 11 now without needing any manual workarounds for Secure Boot or TPM requirements.

The new GNOME Boxes code also introduces a VSOCK device for accessing VM contexts and other improvements. With the revamped GNOME Boxes, it’s also shifting to a Flatpak-first and only model for distributing of new GNOME Boxes releases.

Just wondering if anyone else feels like this. Personally I’m following this community for interesting stuff around Linux and I don’t care too much for a lost percentage or another. Today’s an extreme example with 5 articles (steam share, 2x “10%”, 2x “not actually 10%). This horserace journalism is rarely doing any good imho.

Note, LLMs are very good at finding suspect “security issues” in kernel code these days. But even with the best of the current and next generation tools, at least 1/3 of the results they generate are flat out wrong or harmful. So, if you think your LLM-found/fixed issue in a drivers/staging/ file is really valid, it’s fine to submit it BUT you must have first tested it on the actual hardware for the driver, and described how you have done so, in order for us to be willing to take the change.
