All that to say opinion pieces are not subject to the same journalistic rigor as a standard article, though proper NYtimes journalism leaves a lot to be desired, especially when discussing the genocide in Palestine.

If you don’t want to spend a premium on a commercial product or a large computer monitor (which will be more expensive than an off the shelf modern tv if you want high resolution), then I’m sorry to say your best bet is to simply never connect your tv to the internet. I have a Hisense U8H 55” tv, and it’s amazing. It has all the stupid shit included, but I literally never see any of it, because it’s not connected to the internet and my input is either set to my Apple TV or my computer’s HDMI port.

It’s 4K, has Dolby Vision, HDR10, filmmaker mode, etc., all the bells and whistles and it has never touched the internet, despite being capable of being a huge piece of shit if I ever did connect it, so I just don’t. It’s also about 4 years old at this point, and its software has never been updated (because I won’t connect it to the internet), still works like the day I bought it.

I don’t see anyone ignoring this kind of violent rhetoric. In fact, the very article you posted is from a left-leaning organization attempting to shine a light on it.

What do you suggest, specifically? If your answer is the same kind of rhetoric and advocating for violence against the right, then you’ve already lost me. It’s a common issue for me, connected to some other common issues. I lose my place multiple times a day, lose entire drafts when the app decides to blank itself out and reload the feed on its own, and still have the problem of accidentally going to the communities list and then losing my place in the feed when it forces a refresh. And yeah, good luck finding your drafts, I never can.

I’ve liked this app for the most part, and have been using it since I came over from reddit years ago, but frankly I feel like it has not improved over time, and has in fact gotten noticeably buggy and counterintuitive as it has matured. Might be time for me (and you) to try out some others, I’ve been off the market for Lemmy apps for so long that I have no idea how the other apps have progressed.

Edit: I’m on iOS, iPhone 16 Pro, no shortage of memory as far as I know.

It’s a good question. I’m not totally confident either way, but I remember that debacle, and bought mine after they said it was fixed. They posted somewhere that they hired an independent security researcher to audit everything and he was satisfied that it was resolved. Can we trust that? I really don’t know. I only trust them as much as I trust any tech company, which is very little, but it is was it is.

I have 4 total Eufy devices: the latest base station, a doorbell cam, a separate cam in my kitchen pointing at my cat’s food, and the smart display. They’re all connected to the base station which is hardwired to my gigabit connection. The base station is about 10 feet from the doorbell and smart display, and the kitchen cam is about 10 feet in the other direction. That standalone kitchen cam is the most reliable of my Eufy devices, and it still randomly disconnects, only works some of the time, and streams really jankily.

I wonder if I ended up with a bunch of lemons, it sure sounds like my devices are not working as intended.

I have a Eufy. The only good thing about it, IMO, is the local storage and no required subscription. That’s exactly why I bought it. Aside from that, I find it’s incredibly unreliable and frustrating to use and configure. I also have the Smart Display, which is supposed to integrate seamlessly and turn on automatically when someone rings the doorbell, and it simply doesn’t. It often turns on minutes later, if at all, well after the person left.

The doorbell’s video quality, while supposed to be 2K, is crap. It’s completely jittery, not smooth at all - which means I’ll see a person approach my door, start walking away, and then they’ll simply disappear because of how inconsistent and jittery the stream is. Useless if you care about actually seeing what’s going on outside.

When someone presses the button to ring the doorbell, it rings maybe 50% of the time. The other times it doesn’t make a sound, but still registers the person in the log. Which is completely useless for a doorbell.

On paper, Eufy checks all the boxes. In practice, I’ve been entirely unhappy with it.

That’s true, and Axios is especially terrible with this—it’s a worthless biased rag IMO. But the party leadership’s silence and unwillingness to endorse the winning candidates when it’s obvious how popular they are, is quite loud in and of itself.

The people have been extremely clear about what they want, and what they want is not in the personal best interests of those in power. So it’s safer for leadership to stay quiet because they know that’s how they get more money (read: corruption) and the corporate interests will do the talking for them anyway, that’s one reason they were corrupted in the first place.

It could do quite a bit, in theory, but I’m skeptical that the very regions that would most benefit from the new opportunities and funding, would bend over backwards to find ways to refuse the money and loosened zoning laws etc that this bill provides a “framework” for. It’s all pretty weak and feels like a messaging bill to me. I really hope I’m wrong, I’m trying to buy/build a house myself so I’d love it if these things end up working in parts of the country where it’s almost impossible to get a house without being a millionaire.
