Problem with Account Info - Phone Number

I recently have gotten 15,000 microsoft redeem points and wanted to redeem the League of Legends giftcard.

When trying to redeem the 575 RP giftcard, it said that phone verification is not available, however my friend who lives close to me was able to redeem the same giftcard so I know it is not a regional problem.

I looked into my account information and the phone number previously there is not there anymore, and I cannot add a new phone number, I can only add email addresses. Moreover when trying to login, phone verification by SMS or Call is no longer an option.

I seek help as I have redeemed the giftcards multiple times and this issue has come up now.

Hey there! Nice to meet you!

Unfortunately, it is no longer possible to add a phone number because Microsoft has already phased out this option, as stated in this article: https://support.microsoft.com/accounts-billing/manage/microsoft-account-security-info-verification-codes

As a new option to redeem in Microsoft Rewards, you will need a QR scanner and the Bing app on your phone.

Once you have them, please redeem your rewards by following the instructions under "Verify with the Bing app" > Scan the QR code to open the Bing app and proceed with the verification > Sign in to the Bing app on your phone and provide the 6-character codes from your Microsoft Rewards redeem page. > Once it's done, your redemption will be verified.

Kindly wait a few minutes to 24 hours for your order confirmation via email.

If the issue persists, please contact Microsoft Rewards Support for further assistance:

Thank you for your understanding! Please let me know if you need anything else.

    Best regards,

    Darhyl

The behavior matches a phone/SMS verification issue on the Microsoft account rather than a League of Legends–specific or regional problem.

Based on the context, the most likely causes and steps are:

    1. Check why SMS/phone verification is unavailable
      • VOIP numbers cannot be used for verification or Rewards redemptions. If the removed number was VOIP, it will not be accepted again. Add a mobile or landline number instead.
      • Microsoft may temporarily block sending verification codes if there is unusual activity, too many verification attempts, or heavy compromised traffic from the region. In that case, codes may not be sent and phone options may disappear until the block clears automatically.
    2. Re-add a valid phone number as security info
      • Go to the Microsoft account “how you sign in” / security info page:
      • Select Add phone number and follow the steps to add a mobile or landline number.
      • Notes from the documentation:
        • VOIP numbers cannot be added as a way to sign in or get verification codes.
        • Verification codes sent by email can only be sent to the primary alias or another email added as a way to verify sign-in.
    3. If “We cannot send a text message to this number” or no SMS option appears
      • This can mean:
        • The number or account is temporarily blocked due to unusual activity.
        • There have been excessive or repetitive requests for codes.
        • There is heavy compromised traffic from the geographical location.
      • These blocks are automatic and clear after some time. Avoid repeatedly requesting codes while blocked.
      • Ensure the number being added is a mobile (not VOIP) and is entered correctly.
    4. Rewards-specific checks
      • Microsoft Rewards redemptions require a working non‑VOIP phone number and must be done from the same region as the Microsoft account, without VPN or proxy.
      • If phone verification is not available:
        • Confirm that the account is not using a VOIP number.
        • Confirm that no VPN/proxy is in use and that the account region matches the physical location.
      • If the phone number has been used across many accounts, note that there is a limit (maximum 6 accounts per household) that can be associated with one phone number for Rewards.
    5. If the phone number cannot be added at all
      • First, verify that email-based verification still works and that security info (emails) is correct.
      • If the account cannot add a phone number despite using a valid mobile/landline and waiting for temporary blocks to clear, contact Microsoft account/Rewards support using the official support channels referenced in the Rewards articles (for example, Microsoft Rewards Customer Support for redemption issues).

Once a valid mobile or landline number is successfully added and any temporary block has cleared, SMS/phone verification should reappear as an option, and Rewards redemptions (including League of Legends gift cards) should work again, provided all Rewards program conditions (region, no VPN, non‑VOIP, phone-number usage limits) are met.
