Excel copilot is generating download links that have either expired or are in plain text.

I have tried using CoPilot within Excel, Microsoft Edge and the downloaded app on my computer to create a spreadsheet.

A spreadsheet has been created and according to CoPilot, it is a downloadable file. The instruction is to "Click/open the card above to download the Excel workbook."

When I click on the file/card I get the following message. "File unavailable. Generated files expire after a short period. Please regenerate if needed." I have clicked on it within a second of it being generated and available but the result never changes.

I have tried the copy and pasting of the link into a browser and I get the 404 error message.

I have auto saved turned on in Excel.

The file is not available in One Drive.

I upgraded to Microsoft Premium 365 as I thought that my request to CoPilot may be more than my current subscription would support. That didn't work either!

If someone has a fix to this issue, I would be very happy to hear it.

Thank you

Hi, this usually happens because Copilot generated files are temporary and expire very quickly, even if you open them immediately. In most cases, the link becomes invalid once the session is refreshed or if OneDrive sync doesn’t properly attach the file.

A simple thing you can try is:

    • Close Excel and reopen it
    • Make sure you are signed into the same Microsoft account everywhere
    • Try generating the file again in a new session instead of reopening the old card

Also, some users face this issue when the browser cache or Edge session conflicts with Copilot’s temporary file storage.

If you are still stuck, I found a detailed step-by-step guide that explains similar Microsoft file issues and fixes here: https://tomatoapkbr.com/
