Creative Vision / Rationale / How Did You Incorporate the Theme
Why did I make this, over all?

There were two strong motivators to make this game. One, to simply practice game dev work so that, when the time comes to make a game for my PhD, I have practiced some of the skills necessary. However, when the theme was revealed, I realised I could get two birds with one stone here. My PhD very broadly focuses around meaning and virtual pets. The theme - an image of two hands coming together - fills me with the sense of connection. So where is the overlap here?

What are some of my most meaningful connections?

My partner, my family and my friends, for sure. But who else? Who is *constantly* there for me, with *zero* expectations of me, and zero reservations from giving me the entirety of their heart?

It’s my little spaniel, Tienie. And before it was Tienie, it was my little staffy, Honey.

Tienie has had a rough journey with me. I have had her as a puppy and I have always tried to do the right thing. But Tienie was a difficult puppy: she had a lot of fear, and that fear could sometimes realize itself in biting others. There were points at the deepest pits of despair within our journey that I thought the only thing to do was to put Tienie to sleep.

But thanks to support from the many other people that Tienie had impacted in her four short years of life, I was told to keep trying. We went through different trainers, different techniques, and became inseparably close. My heart beats where Tienie is.

It was my therapist who asked me one day what I liked about my dog. After I finished my list, my therapist asked me, “well, have you told any of this to her?” and that is why I made this game.

I have written the message for my dog. And after I submit for this game jam, I will read it out to her.

Congrats on finishing your first Godot game! 🎉

As a fellow pet owner, I honestly hesitated at first—I thought, "I can't bear to watch this, it might be too painful."

But playing through it, I realized your message is beautiful: Love connects us, and healing is mutual. It's not just us saving them; they save us too.

Thank you for being brave enough to give my game a shot! And thank you for the congratulations. I really enjoyed Godot and I'm excited for the next game 🫡

I’m so glad to have stumbled upon the heartfelt bond between you and your dog within this game. I believe this is one of the most vital meanings of games as a medium of expression—they help us preserve the unique moments and spaces where our emotions reside.

I am so glad this has resonated with you Shangti. It's my wish to make small games like this that can remind us how games can be so powerful in telling stories that can touch many.

Brilliant usage of basic platforming mechanics to lead the player through a story, especially the slowed down movement broke me 😭 Best of luck with your PhD 🙏

Hey thank you so much! Because I'm new to dev work, I had to try to think of how I could communicate story with a very simple suite of mechanics. I am glad that it worked...even though the outcome is a little painful :'). I found that sequence especially hard to design and make, but also really healing. I definitely cried a lot.

Well done for a first game! The illustrations are great and the narrative is very nicely put together. I particularly liked how when I ran up to the illustration of the person (you) it looked like they were hugging Tienie.

Thank you! I was hoping it would flow well.

This is a cute game! I loved the art style, my wife and I had a dog that passed recently after 16 years and we recently had it in us to get a new puppy. So short story shorter, this hit home - thanks for sharing!

Hey, I am sorry to hear about the mutual pain but I am so glad that the message can resonate. The dog "after the dog" has big shoes to fill, but they are so extraordinary too.

Thank you! It certainly was a very personal project so it feels quite weird and quite cool to be sharing it. :-)
