btw, this change should be considered a duct tape temporary patch on as we really, *really* need to upgrade the whole repo to use a higher version of python. something like python 3.11 or 3.12

This PR should be considered a temporary fix, as we really need to upgrade the whole program to use a higher version of Python (>=3.12).
