Post-social distancing, we were easily taxed by too much
talking yet talked even more, our tongues unleashing
oceans of words, clogging the throats of coastal roads
with seaweed and sand. Remember the joke about
the boy who didn’t speak for years, then complained about
burnt toast? We are all raising a child ghost in the dark
rooms of ourselves. In the silences we say the most.

      Tribute to Invented Forms

      Erin Murphy (Demi-Sonnet)

“Demi-sonnets are seven lines, end with a full or slant rhyme, and have no set meter or syllabic count. They tend to be aphoristic and gesture toward a larger narrative or idea. Because of the shorter runway, there is a quicker pivot to the volta, or turn, than you find in a traditional sonnet. I created the form in 2009 while experimenting with writing shorter poems. I like the challenge of packing philosophical or emotional resonance into such a compressed space by paring down all the available information to just a few potent images. It has been gratifying not only to write in this form but also to read demi-sonnets written and published by others.”
