What’s in a Name, Anyway?

God. Goddess. Universe. Life Force. Prana. The Absolute. Reality. Brahma. Beauty. Truth. Time-Space. The Void. Any of those oft capitalized attempts at assigning a definite label to an infinite indefinite. Borrow one from another language; it still doesn’t quite capture something you can’t contain, identify, prove, or physically touch.

I wish there was a word more useful, less loaded with pretense and individual meaning (or lack of meaning to be honest) and a little more ACTUALLY universal instead of implied and generally thought to be universal.

It absolutely should NOT be a name. Let’s start with that. That gives it form. It is formless. It doesn’t need a personality. It IS all personality. Everyone you’ve ever known, met, heard of, or read about. Plus you, too. Of course, if you knew that, we wouldn’t need a new word, would we?

And we spend far too much humanizing animals, anthro-morphing the world into our own image. But that only works if we are gods, right, and with so many insisting on a great separation between the Creator and the Created, between breath and dust, me and That, us and them, earth and heaven.

So, no visual representations either. Because they’re just way too culturally biased, aren’t they?

Absolutely stupid to use an existing word, like “it”. Calling a thing It is the same as calling it “Thing”. Negative.

Where does that leave us? Can’t use that word, either. “Us” is far too volatile a term. It changes meaning with the mood, weather, time of day, and latest meal. Who could possibly define that?

I’d tell you what the word is, but then I’d have to kill you. Or you would have to kill me.

Because at that point, there would only be one of us.

Whose name would we take?

I love weddings.

Conversate.

There is so much to say,
but I don’t have the words.
If I could explain the way it seems to me,
I’m not sure you could hear it.

That’s OK. You need to listen to your own voice,
the one that talks to you
when you’ve stopped talking,
when your mind takes a minute
in that space between breath
to sink back into the ocean
from the crest of the wave
you think is what makes up the entire sea
because it’s got your face on it.

So much to say.
So little time.
What a joke. There’s all of everything.

Give up what you think is freedom.
That word is just another prison.

Unbound

So many miles and so much time
from that first step to this:
a constant walking, seeking for what?
A clue, a job, a mate, a guru.

You have come so far and accomplished exactly nothing.
Whatever you have done, the things you accumulate:
conquests, properties, titles, degrees, friends, followers, legacy
only matter to those left behind.

The things don’t matter.
They are like your body: terminal.

It all ends, doesn’t it?
Does it matter how, or when, or under what circumstances, really?
Does it matter how the material stuff is dealt with?

You’ve changed clothes or form or station or being or at least location.
If there’s anything left to you at all.
Jury’s still out on that one,
but every time we send someone to check they don’t come back.

Aren’t you tired yet?

There’s nothing to look for out there.

You’re already home.

Here it goes

If I know, the universe knows. If the universe knows, you know. Everybody knows. Everything knows. But they don’t know they know. You and I don’t know either. We don’t even know each other.

But of course we do.

We just have been taught to forget.

The Easy Winners

I am not communicating any message.
There’s not really much to say.
Something more than just a sound bite tweet or DM
is possible but it must be
face to face.

I’m not sure Google translate will be allowed.

How could we not see under the armor of clothes,
beneath the skin and bones,
deep there inside at the subatomic level,
there is no us and them?

Under the names and titles,
beneath the family trees and broken branches,
deep inside your person marrow,
what is you and me?

I am not communicating any message.
There are no words for it.
It is beyond language and dance and music and …

If we both show up,
are we both here or somewhere else?
If all four enter and just one leaves,
which one’s the winner
and what’s the prize?

You can’t win if you don’t enter. So go ahead.
But you have to be present to win.

Head Lines

The truth is I’m not saying anything.
There’s no intelligent design behind these words,
how they morph into sentences, pages, and books;
it’s a false front. There’s nothing behind.

The truth is I don’t know anything.
About anything, really.
Anything that matters.

Not to me. There’s a LOT of stuff that apparently matters to me,
more than anything else in the world:
health, relationships, friendship, loyalty, decency.

But what’s that really worth, anyway? On paper?

If you pick away at the surface long enough
(and we all pick)
you’ll find what’s underneath
is all surface too.

Nothing doesn’t have an outline. It doesn’t have depth or breadth.
But it has everything else.

Shrinkage

Every word I learn makes me want to say less.
There is no end to the ways to become smaller.
What good it to say a thing you know is true
when you can’t recognize reality?

Every sound I hear makes me want to stop singing.
There are too many voices in my head.
When your monkey mind is a troop of great apes
and you really dislike Charlton Heston.

Every sentence I speak cages me in its spaces.
One mind cannot process all these requests.
How does a system designed to manage a trickle
cope with an uncooperative flood?
