The Darts have released Halloween Love Songs just in time to spook up your springtime! The music is a fast-paced mix of surfish Munster-ific retro organ-and-guitar and crashing drums with vocals reminiscent of The Black Belles and, at times, Lords of Acid, and would be perfectly home at a beach party hosted by the Boulet Brothers. And I mean all of that in the best way you can mean it. 

Or as singer/songwriter Nicole Laurenne put it: “During a 2024 interview with Rock n Folk magazine in Paris, I jokingly mentioned that the world needed some new Halloween songs – that the holiday deserved so much more than just “Monster Mash,” and no one seemed serious about filling that void. So I got serious about it. But I also didn’t want an album that was just monster-costumes-on-the-playground. So, Side A is chock full of tasty, candy-colored Halloween kitsch, to be played while trick-or-treating as the sun sets, blasted over a school’s public address system, and headlining every seasonal sing-along. But Side B is the soundtrack for after dark, when the bonfire is raging. It’s for sweaty middle-of-the-night dancing, making out on a bed of empty candy wrappers, and spinning through an all-nighter apocalypse.”

While we disagree with Miss Laurenne that “the world needed some new Halloween songs… and no one seemed serious about filling that void” (check our posts from recent years to the contrary), we certainly are always happy when somebody makes more, and have happily added this album to the ever-growing collection!

In 2010, I stumbled across gravecast.com (don’t try – it’s long gone), a blog in which one Morbius J. Kromwell (aka Martin L. Collins) created and released thirty soundscapes for Halloween over a period of months. I eagerly downloaded each new one as it was released and they’ve been part of my Spooky Season listening for the past 15 years.

Last year, out of curiosity, I went looking to see if any of the tracks were still available online and discovered that, in fact, they were not. However, I connected the Gravecast site back to a Halloween blog by Mr. Kromwell (https://morbiusjkromwell.wordpress.com/) where he talks about each track, and from there connected his real name to the site and reached out about adding his tracks to the Cult of the Great Pumpkin/Sinister Sonics archive on SoundCloud. He was kind enough to let me do it and now you all get to benefit from the results – you can listen to/download 28 of the 30 tracks at https://soundcloud.com/savagesinister/sets/treats-from-the-grave (SoundCloud removed 2 tracks for potential copyright issues), and if you’re curious about any given track, you can find details on Mr. Kromwell’s blog (link above).

A little afraid, but in a FUN way! I would always think of each mask as a live character, and what they would talk like if in a haunted house. I would scare myself on purpose to make things even more scarier! Haha! To me, this EP brings the scary, magic feeling of classic 80s/90s Halloween shops back to life! All my stuff is influenced by SPOOKY SOUNDS FX cassettes and nerdy Horror soundtracks, so both tracks have a lofi 80s feel to them.
