At first, I thought this was about Escape From Witch Mountain, a lil 1975 Disney “gateway to horror” film as I call them them: things get dark and kids were treated as people who can handle dark material.
This movie is not that movie. Clearly. So, am I ?!paying?! to find The Witches Mountain? Yeah, I am. Because I trust your curation, sense of humor, and perspective is interesting and usually pretty fun. I’ll report back post viewing (I know breath is being held for my opinion!).

Ha no worries! Comments, emails, whatever is fine by moi, although I forget to respond to emails probably 95% of the time. I really appreciate this! Especially since I when editing I felt like I could have gone way deeper into things. Maybe for a future episode or something more one of these days? Even just a tour of my bookshelf hehe. It's a subject I find completely/endlessly fascinating, so I'm happy to blather on about it wherever and whenever...glad to know it's good to listen to as well!

Stacie, in 1998, I was on plane flying from my home country Australia to LA. On one side was physicist & the other, the sax player from Spearhead. Great conversations, but when it came time to the inflight movie, they chose Con Air & I, knowing about the Spice Girls phenomena, but hadn't heard a full song, chose Spice World. They rolled their eyes & I settled in for a great, fun time. I agree with everything you said about the movie. EVERYTHING!! You're the first person I've heard do that masterpiece justice. I owe you a debt of gratitude.

I may have seen this in the theater when it came out, there were a TON of bigfoot documentaries coming out when I was a kid in the 70's, and we went to a lot of them, as well as ones about other cryptids like the Loch Ness monster, the yeti, etc. as well as ones about the Bermuda Triangle, UFO's, people looking for Noah's Ark etc. Many were made by the same company, Sunn Classic Pictures, and would re-use footage from their other films, and they would make a "new" movie by cobbling together parts under a new title like "Mysterious Monsters etc." I don't know if this one was one of theirs, but the logo for the company was pretty distinctive.

Was the documentary you mentioned that you couldn't remember possible "Sasquatch" that come out on Hulu a few years ago?

I saw that one in theatre as a wee lad and liked it ; now that I saw it again on a French blu-ray, I'm more to the tune of that review. Funny how most eighties movies feels more dated than some from the forties… Oh, and I enjoyed "Ghost Ship" and, as someone said, I thought the twist was quite smart for one. Not of the "we need a twist at the end so we'll shoehorn one even if it does not fit the rest of the story" persuasion…

Speaking of slashers, I just described the new release "Primate" as a perfunctory 80s teen slasher but with a rabid chimp (portrayed by a guy in a suit) as the serial killer. Of course the suit is supposed to be a real pet chimp that's been bitten by a rabid mongoose on the loose, but you've made me think of a twist that would have put it over the top. If it had actually been a real person impersonating a chimp who'd gone rabid (hiding the family's real, non-rabid, chimp), that might have been really amazing -- a mask/costume and wackadoodle murderer (the kills are rather animalistic and gorey) in one.

Nice to see mention of Kip Niven; got to work with him on several projects in the 2000s; and remember him from the 70s (ALICE, MAGNUM FORCE, DAMNATION ALLEY, EARTHQUAKE, NIGHT GALLERY 'The Girl With The Hungry Eyes').

Also recently met Thomas Ackerman, DP of NEW YEAR'S EVIL (and BEETLEJUICE, SCARY MOVIE 4 much later)

Whenever I see a movie that has a live band playing, it makes me think of NIGHT TRAIN TO TERROR, which keeps cutting back to a band throughout the movie--except they're playing the exact same rock song, over and over, forever, like it's Tipper Gore's version of Hell!
