Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) is a harmful traditional practice aimed at forcefully amputating part of a child or adolescent’s clitoris or/and genitalia with a razor blade (often without anesthesia) to prevent sexual pleasure and ensure women’s faithfulness once they marry. FGM affects millions of girls and women worldwide. It is recognized internationally as a violation of human rights and has no medical benefits.
Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) refers to procedures that intentionally alter or injure female genital organs for non-medical reasons.
FGM is practiced in parts of Africa, the Middle East, and Asia, and also among migrant communities worldwide.
Today, millions of women living in Europe, North America, and other regions are affected.
FGM persists due to deeply rooted cultural traditions, social pressure, and misinformation.
It is often falsely believed to ensure purity, marriageability, or religious compliance—despite having no basis in religion or medicine.
FGM can lead to serious health complications, chronic pain, loss of sexual sensation, childbirth difficulties, and psychological trauma.
Beyond physical effects, it often impacts self-esteem, intimacy, and overall quality of life.
Female genital mutilation (FGM) comprises all procedures involving partial or total removal of the external female genitalia or other injury to the female genital organs for non-medical reasons.
The three major types of FGM, and their subtypes, are:
Partial or total removal of the clitoral glans and/or the clitoral prepuce (hood).
Ia: Prepuce only.
Ib: Clitoral glans with prepuce.
Partial or total removal of the clitoral glans and the labia minora, with or without removal of the labia majora.
IIa: Labia minora only.
IIb: Clitoral glans and labia minora.
IIc: Clitoral glans, labia minora, and labia majora.
Narrowing of the vaginal opening by creating a seal through cutting and repositioning the labia minora or labia majora, with or without removal of the clitoris.
IIIa: Labia minora.
IIIb: Labia majora.
The Mission of
Clitoraid
Clitoraid is a non-profit organization dedicated to ending Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) and restoring health, dignity, and sexual wellbeing to women who have been affected by it.
Clitoraid works on two essential fronts:
prevention through education and healing through restorative surgery.
Clitoraid supports and promotes clitoral restorative surgery performed by trained medical professionals in safe, ethical clinical settings.
These procedures are designed to help women regain physical sensation, reduce pain, and support emotional recovery.

What is clitoral restorative surgery?
Clitoral restorative surgery is a medical procedure designed to reconstruct clitoral tissue that was damaged or removed during FGM.
This intervention is based on modern surgical techniques and scientific research showing that a significant portion of the clitoris always remains intact beneath the surface.
