* in progress

I buy bouquets of flowers
cheap ones and put them in empty glass
jars, of imported Egyptian olives

They add colour and interest
to a life that has faded like a stain
of toothpaste on the bathroom floor.

It takes me about two hours
to forget they are there.
I get used
to no longer looking
at the world
to ignoring what is there
to hiding from anything that isn’t
black coffee or milky arak

Let’s say

I am a defeatist
and I ran away from a life by the sea and missiles
and from people who prefer death over the dangers of peace.

And let’s say I can’t manage
to strum in a rasgueado style
and instead I just end up
disturbing my neighbour’s peace

And let’s say I scratch my belly
and the skin feels healthy and pleasant and soft and also swollen
and I think I am full
of sorrow or of idleness
as if they are not the same thing.

I Might Go to Bed

I might go to bed
not knowing which song is playing on the radio,
or tomorrow’s expected temperature.

I made a strong resolution
not to water the flowers in the glass jar,
to let them dry out
instead of just wilting.

There is a book
waiting for me next to my pillow
and it is all the certainty I have
left in this life.

Like the Ganges or this forest
in the Belgian Ardennes, like the time
I first had sex, this book
is certain even if I’ll never read it
again.

When I Think About Rome

When I Think About Rome i think
about the ancient struggles

we carry with us each day
and all too often into bed

too. I remember so many stories
of emperors and counsels and how we hurt

each other with words and silence. I remember
the taste of dough and coffee and a map congested of sights

and palaces we wanted to visit and could not
seem to find a common way to reach

together. When i think about Rome i
want to go back in time

to the first time i saw you
sitting on the naked log in the green field

before any word have been spoken
before any road been walked.

Together

We fit together
like two pieces of a puzzle
so different from one another
that we are locked together
having no existence
without the larger picture.

Is there anything
else existing in this life?
