I am currently working on a large necron force since november 2011. Here are some destroyers I recently painted. I converted one into a heavy destroyer by positioning the gun arm horizontally and by adding a telsa carbine barrel to the right shoulder as a targeting system. The gun barrel was extended with a flying base rod.

So I've lost interest in this site for ages, mainly because I've been focusing my efforts into running the organisation www.beyondthepoint.co.uk with my friend, which focuses on exploring local historical remains from all eras.

Modelling hasn't faded however, and I've mainly developed a Necron army whilst I've been gone, plus a ton of other bits. I did pick up a 1/6 British infantryman from WW2 however, which certainly 'ain't a toy' but is at the same time - the intricacy is incredible. Check it out!

Today i went down to Caliver Books at Leigh-on-Sea. it's a wargaming shop that has now moved elsewhere, but the old Leigh store still exists for those that liked it, albiet being rather barren. Although it doesn't carry many products, it does have some boxes of old spare miniatures, which you can find some real gems in, plus, it offers good prices. It's only opposite from my bus stop, so I pop by without difficulty. Today i bought the plastic high Elf Prince mounted and foot kit, and an old GW book called 'Collecting and Painting Wargames Armies'. I got the lot for only £8! That's tonight's entertainment sussed! Codex: Sisters of battle in WD + New Vampire Counts Next Month

i know it's been a while, and I'm working on Island of Blood High elves at the moment. I also did a few 28mm ww2 vehicles and US Ranger GIs. For this article, I though I'd spread the news out first. Next month, we will be getting new Vampire Counts models, with rules for new units included in next months White Dwarf. We'll also be getting a new Sisters of Battle Codex which will be published in WD next month! I know all this from the ltest white dwarf - here's the pics, scanned from the back page...

Also, there are some new oop finecast models coming back. That 'Lammasu' does look cool, albeit 100% daft! I love the way GW are making generic animals and monsters available for your armies with this 'Storm of magic'...

Games Workshop - Greedy, Careless of the Hobby - Finecast - Poor Quality and a Rip Off

As you know, I was adamant on making a Finecast purchase, but I turned away empty handed. Citadel Finecast is expensive, it has much flashing and imperfections, and is of a cheap material. I understand that the price increases are simply for many products, and not just Finecast ones, but although the product is the same sculpt, it is in a different material, and this means that the same price as the old material (metal) cannot be charged on what is practically a new product. In the business world, business doesn't care if the model is a 'Stormcaller' sculpt, or 'Uruk-hai' sculpt, but it does care about what material it is, and how much this material costs. This means that just because a 'Gandalf' in metal is now the same 'Gandalf', but in a different material (resin), and this doesn't make it the same product. It is now an entirely new product, and should be labelled with the according prices of this new product, and not with the prices of an old product which was completely different, except for that it resembles the new one.

Men of Minas Tirith - Revamped from the Dust

Hey guys, a few months ago (back in September), I picked up a second hand GW case with some LotR minis in it. I decided to get to work at revamping the 'splodgy n'dodgy' paint job that was done on them. All I simply did was washed the armour with some black paint, overbrushed some Mithril Silver, and really just block coloured on the black, gold, skin, and brown. Took me no longer than half an hour!

EM4 Miniatures: Universal Plastic Spaceships Review

Hey, I know it's been a while, but you'll have my unmentioned Dark Eldar force upcoming, so i won't be short of stuff to write about! As for know, I bought a boxed set of 12 plastic spacecraft from EM4 Miniatures, for only £2.50! Awesome, it even comes with flying bases and a proper box! What a bargain! They are hard plastic (no flexible Italeri rubbish), and look pretty similar in size to a 28mm model (my DE Wych is there for comparison). Just think - that's only 3 school dinners for 6 boxed sets! I will paint 'em up soon, and may knock up some simple rules for them. Here are some pics...

WW2 Trip To France : Sword Beach/Grand Bunker

So, I've not posted in weeks! All for good reason though - I went on a trip to France. Some of these places were of historical significance concerning the Second World War. I'm gonna be posting features of this trip to act as not only a wargaming/modelling reference, but also out of sheer interest.

To begin with, I will show you my one day trip to Sword Beach. Stopping off, on the journey back to England, we detoured and set for Sword Beach, one of the five D-Day beaches, this one invaded by the British, with help of some French Commandos. Despite having a walk around the beach, eyes on the sand, but no luck (if you get what I mean), I also went to visit the German Grand Bunker overlooking the beach. It was pretty big, but not 'grand' as such, although it did not disappoint by no means. It was a museum inside, and had some stuff outside, without further ado, here's the pics...

Sorry it's been a while - been busy. The american paras are nearly painted now, and I've been getting back into D&D again (since last September-October). I've also been real into the Orcs and Gobbos, with my O.G.Re project. I picked up a box of the new savage orc boyz and painted three of them up. I went to town on these bearing in mind that they were infantry, and I suppose the other 7 will hit hard! For the skin, I basecoated goblin green, washed them in watered down (and with a drop of washing up liquid to keep surface tension, allowing a more even coverage) dark angels green, and then layered on a 4:1 mix of goblin green to sunburst yellow. By the way, adding white to green simply pales it up, add yellow and then introduce white on the higher layers if you want a zany green! A great kit - and fun to paint - !

One Tip to Change your Hobby - Physical Metal

Here lies one of the biggest tips to rule them all. So big that it is in fact staring you in the face - why paint metal on a model made of the actual stuff? Yes - I'm talking about using the metal of the model, rather than paint it. Don't spray up your mini - you can base coat him later. To do this just take a piece of fine sandpaper/wet wet n' dry, and abrade the surfaces of your model which are meant to be metal 'till they are relatively flat. Then get an object like my trusty 'metal-ended' pen (it can be anything with an edged - not sharp - hard metal surface) and scrape in any direction. You should notice a magnificent polished finish is appearing on your metal model, like a superbly polished armour plate. Just water right down some black paint and wash it into the recesses of the to represent metal parts of your model. When it is half dry, rub your finger in the direction that is not against the recesses, once, on the washed areas - to naturally highlight and remove wash from the higher points of the model. You can glaze it to dull it up/colour it if you want from here, but otherwise - it's done! Very simple, time saving, and as real as the real thing!

I tried it out on an Uruk-Hai - a bit shiny for one, but never the less a great test piece. Came out awesome first time!

Anything like this will do! - Use any metal bit for different tasks!

Warlord Games American Airborne - B.A.R. Conversion

Just got the set of 12 american airborne paras, pretty good deal - £10 for set with extra bases! RTP £13 without bases! Comes with some M1 Garands, an M1 Carbine, M1A1 Thompson, 30.cal Browning HMG. I converted a Browning Automatic Rifle from an M1 Garand, cut off end, and attatch metal bits/paperclip wire rods.

Tamiya Scenery for D-Day WW2 Gaming Board

Yesterday, I went down to HobbyCraft and picked up some Tamiya scenery kits for my 'Never Surrender' game, and D-Day board...

Here is the Sandbags kit - has a lot of potential - heat them up and fold them! The only thing is, you only get around 3 average sized barricades per kit. 8/10

This is perfect for my gaming board, and has anti-tank obstacles, and stakes to make barbed wire fences/coils, but comes with no wire, or plastic wire. 6.5/10, but 'cos it was perfect for me, I'd say 8.5/10 in my instance only.

Rather good for some bombed french buildings, but only contains enough to build 1 medium sized building corner and two small wall corners/barricades. 7/10

So, it seems Tamiya are rather decieving - false. I suppose that these kits are more just 'casted resources' for the modeller, rather than scenery kits. At only £5 each, this was waiting for my gaming board...

Here is one average sized sandbag formation that I've built, and one anti-tank obstruction (so that's what they were!). Here is also a coil of wire (I wrapped it 'round a pipe') with two of the stakes glued together at either end.

I made these barbed-wire pointy-parts out of some thin wire wrapped around the chunkier wire, leaving the ends pointing out.

Here is a building with a carboard floor ripped for it, with paper-clip pipes and window frame. The smashed window is made from the bottom of a Blueberry Punnet, with clear plastic of course!

And here's the D-Day board with minis for size comparison, and all of the terrain I've built on it!

I am working on the Never Surrender full version rulebook now, but hopefully I can get out the free simplified version out straight after!

Project O.G.R.E. - Orcs and Goblins Revamp:

Hey guys, so, it's project OGRe, which is going to be a venture into the revival of my Orcs and Gobbos army. I started it just over 3 years ago, and was my second army, after Lizardmen, if you consider me not taking the Skull Pass minis as an army, just a start into the hobby and game, which is how I saw it, having had them before my Lizardmen. Of course, this army had alot to be desired, for instance, not a single regiment of Orc Boyz, different bases, only some highlights with drybrushing, and not being able to paint a metal model without the paint chipping, nor getting bright colours bright enough. Not leaving my WW2 models being, i will be starting the revamping of this army. It will include adding extra highlights, washes, all bases the same, repainting some models, and some adding to this army...

Which brings us to this orc boy project. I have had many orcs, which have been left to eat dust, in multiple pieces! Many second hand orc boyz (hell whoever owned them should never be allowed to keep his genitalia) and some from Black Reach (I never took to Orks), will be repainted/painted, fixed, and even converted from 40k to fantasy orcs (cut off the gun and add a shield for Choppa Boyz). I am making a start, and have 8 done:

So, I've been working on some WW2 stuff lately, with exceptions, such as Project OGRe (all will be revealed tomorrow!), and Ugluk, from LOTR. The D-Day gaming board is complete, with painted sand beaches (use Dulux paint, great matte priming finish, plus you've got paint to waste, prime models and boards with it). Later in the weeks an store will open, in which you can purchase my 'Never Surrender' WW2 skirmish rules set, which will be free, however, they will be simpler, and the paid version will come with colour pictures, and a Nazi Zombies rule set! The D-Day board also had some grass mat glued on top. The minis were painted in groups of five in around an hour and a half using washes, so that was good - a painting tutorial will be coming!

WW2 English and Nazis, plus D-Day Gaming Board

Heya guys, today I picked up a box of Warlord Game's Bolt Action British and German (why do wargaming companies always call them Germans, and not Nazis???). I'm currently working on some skirmish rules available as a free download! It is pretty fast to play (it actually is, I'm not just saying that), and focuses on the toss of a coin, as well as a dice roll to hit (rules available for free download soon!). I've built up six of each faction's troops, and I'm working on a D-Day gaming board! I've used a large box to raise the coast for the hill, some newspaper, cardboard, and brown paper for the slope down to the beach. I have also made some ruined buildings and gun emplacements out of some old packaging polystyrene. Gonna paint the Brits now, and I'll maybe start on the Nazis if time abides...

Warhammer Fantasy 5,500pt Tourney BatSum

   So I had the battle, and it was a good one, although the time ran out as it was just getting tasty, between round 3 and 4. There were many ways to score points, these including:
1pt for a hill captured
1pt for standard captured
3pts for general slain
5pts for army general slain

   Our team consisted of my 2,109pts of Skaven, James, another Skaven player (he loves hordes!), plus another two guys, some Vampire Counts and Ogres. That was 5,500pts. On the opposing side there was around 4,000pts of a stoic dwarven battle line, and another 1,500pts of Tomb Kings (that guys in for a treat in a few months!).

My 'Men of da Match' was certainly my Gutter Runners with Sniktch - Poisoned attacks, 2 attacks each, Snikcht at WS8, always striking first, and 6 attacks with weeping blades! It completely cut down the dwarven gun-line of 3 organ guns (which were very deadly) in scarcely 2 turns!

However the true man of the match for our team had to be James' 'Helen' the Hell Pit Abomination, which killed 12 slayers, 12 long drong dwarven pirates, and 12 quarrelers!

Also at the tourney, me and my cous, Alex Evans - a.k.a. Marsiblu, ventured into the world of mini photography, and small aperture shots, more to come...

Skaven Army List - Preparing for a Tourney on Saturday

I have a large-scale Warhammer Fantasy tournament battle at my wargaming club on Saturday, so I'm gonna use my Skaven list. I will take some photos, and give you a brief rundown on what happened. Essex Miniatures, My Unsung Hero: A Review

Hey hey guys (cough cough BTP), today I'm gonna tell you about the possibly known Essex Miniatures (http://www.essexminiatures.co.uk), which are, for some reason, based in Essex, UK. They do online and in-store orders, and stock a great range of paints, basing material, cool painted terrain, tons of books, resin buildings, and of course, shed loads of miniatures! So here's my story with this encounter...

So here's me, living in Canvey Island, Essex. At my wargaming club I see a cool bit of terrain, so I pick it up, and examine it. Upon it's underside, I found a sticker, with the address of the store on it. It struck me that this piece of terrain, from Essex Miniatures (I'd heard of it before), was located in the industrial estate around only a 5 minute drive from my house (though hopefully not too near!). I set out to find it, with a print out from google maps, but came home not at all victorious - I suspected the store had closed down long ago, or had moved, but checking out the website, it listed the same address, and was regularly updating itself! Setting out again, I found it's entrance (a generic wooden door, withe the industrial estate's generic small sign on it) - if Essex Miniatures are reading, then you need to make it bigger, and more interesting! Going inside, I turn on the light switch to the 'show-room/store front'. I am overwhelmed by hordes of miniatures, all in display cabinets, some painted, some not, some 25mm, some 15mm, some resin buildings, some books, some Wargames Illustrated, and even some free catalogs. I think 'to hell with that 25mm roman leader on horse', and turn my eyes to the more intricate and cheap/fun-2-paint 15mm models. They look awesome, and I think "Forget that 25mm 100 Yrs. War English Army, bring on the 15mm". They looked so much more fun and 'bitesized' to paint, and, it's only £2.29 for 8! That's not even that 'spare fiver' gone! I purchased 8 spearmen, 8 handgunners, and 8 foot knights, along with pvc cut bases, which were really fun to buy as well suprisingly. I find myelf in a hobby addiction, going back 3 times in 2 weeks - the 2nd time the day after the 1st! They even sold printed sticker banners! And so, my first 15mm army began, on 100 Yrs. war English! Now, down to the models...

Quality (material/casting wise) - 9/10:

So far, I've not seen a single bit of flashing or vent on these models, and the models come with little or no grease! The metal quality and type is not at all different from that of Games Workshop themselves, perhaps even better, due to no flashing!

Convertibility/Gluing Ease - 8/10:

These will be glued together/to their bases with no difficulty at all, and take all super glues. The metal is bendable, allowing pose changes, and they can be cut and converted with the relative ease of any metal model, allowing me to create full command sets. the spear tips (pointed poles) can be easily turned into a leaf shape by flattening with pliers. Priming is a piece of cake.

Quality and Detail of Sculpts - 6.5/10:

Here's probably the only downfall, and it's only visible on the older models (whatever scale). Some areas may appear a little rounded, or a little cartoony/heroic scale.

Painting Ease/Fun - 9.5/10:

This is why I love 15mm. 8 models can be painted in an evening, and are much more fun to paint than other minis. They come out very pleasing, I only use 2 layers per 'part', which goes great with the 15mm scale, and looks very crisp afterwards.

Affordability/Range - 10/10:

Like I say, 8 15mm models for only £2.29 - awesome! There is almost any historical mini you can think of here, plus some fantasy although I think those look a little '80's', and cartoony. Like i say, any hobby/gaming item - they'll have it, they even do painting commissions of any mini!

So, spread the word, buy one set! Try something different, for the better! Great 2 paint, start an army in a day, for the surplus of a days wages! I love 'em. More coverage on historical wargaming will be living on this blog, but for next time, it's the Deathmaster Snikcht...

You've seen 'em, those gritty, pro looking minis. Even when the guy tells you he only slappped on a wash to a 'splodged-blodge' of a mini did it look great, you still aren't so convinced. But it was, here I've splodged on one coat of each colour, maybe two layers on some of the areas, but those don't really show up. Then I simply took the Citadel washes, and splashed them on my model as if it was water, give it go! it takes no experience or skill, just, not all my minis are painted this way (I can still paint, it's just hordes of skaven which I want to get done quickly).

My Stormvermin are in progress, and here I have my free hand banner, but the other side is not complete. Undercoated with Dheneb Stone, highlight with Tamiya White - don't get it, too runny!

Golden Demon Bronze Skaven Clanrat

So I claim to have a Golden Demon Bronze trophy, well, the first feature of my blog will be that very miniature. Here it is...

It was basically painted with 'many-layered' layering. It may appear to have blends, but these are just where there are so many layers that it appears to be blended. The metal was painted by a metallic orange-purple layered, with two washes, and then a 'rust scrape' of mithril silver. It suprisingly to a considerably short time to paint, around 6 hours, unlike my previous failed GD entry (more on that to come), which took around 10 hours, partially due to painstaking trial and error blending, which I clearly never continued in my next run!
