In my original report on the Hull site I considered this station to be one of the worst the Met Office operates.. I doubted it could actually get any worse but time has obviously proven me wrong. The above image is stripped from the local radio station sending a reporter to try and find this “site” (I use the term very loosely) that so regularly reports both regional and national highs. A quick update regarding how bad this is getting and a sad indictment of the unacceptably poor Met Office operating standards.

As I plough my way through to completing my review of every Met Office operational site, I regularly discover yet more are opened, significantly relocated or reopened. The end of this section of the project never seems to be reached with the numbers left to review stubbornly remaining in double figures. I genuinely have no concerns regarding how many the Met Office may wish to operate providing those used for climate recording (all of them it seems) are improving in quality as one should reasonably expect. Sadly they are not and Rosehearty’s reopening is yet another example of the status quo never really changing.

Firstly a confession – my original report of Chillingham Barns involved a case of mistaken identity – partly! The site I previously reviewed was in fact definitely Chillingham Barns which, by the date of my publication on the 17/7/2025, had in fact closed down. It was replaced by Chillingham Barns Number 2 just 16 days prior thus the daily “extreme” I noted to the original site was, I presume, from the new number 2 site. The cause of this move and possible consequences should be quite interesting to follow.

Those who have followed my posts from the start may recall my review of Craibstone number 2 from the early days of the Surface Stations Project. I personally felt the new Craibstone 2 site was a good reliable one, well established and maintained by its owner the SRUC – Scotland’s Rural University. My experience of studying weather stations leads me to expect the highest standards from agricultural and associated research institutions and they rarely disappoint. Whilst aviation sites fundamentally exist to assist short term micro scale aviation requirements, agricultural sites record weather in support of climate analysis over wide area representation and long term time scales. Craibstone offers a remarkably good contrast between aviation and agricultural sites given that one of the worst possible aviation sites was under 2km/1.25 miles away – the risible DYCE.

As well as the report below, the Sunday Telegraph editor has also weighed in, declaring ‘We’ve lost the war against climate change. Time to scrap net zero’ which is called ‘a futile gambit’. Of course the so-called war has never existed except in the heads of those who think carbon dioxide, nature’s vital ingredient for growth and energy, is the problem. The costly policies brought in have had no effect on it. The squeeze on living standards and business activity is unsustainable, says this study.

A new report has warned the United Kingdom is set to face a £40 billion annual bill by the end of the decade as its drive towards net zero energy continues, says Emerging Risks Media.

In a new study The Prosperity Institute say the costs come from the integration of renewable energy systems into the national grid, but these systems are uncompetitive in a free market.

The report explained: “Britain currently has the highest industrial electricity prices and the fourth-highest domestic electricity prices in Europe. While high gas prices contribute to wholesale costs, this paper argues that the dominant driver of elevated electricity bills is the cumulative impact of policies designed to accelerate renewables deployment and achieve Net Zero.”

Balancing is out of control as more renewables enter the system claims leaked report with staff demoralised, says Energy Live News.

Engineers responsible for keeping Britain’s lights on have warned they no longer have control of the electricity system as renewable generation, batteries and local power sources expand faster than operators’ ability to monitor them.

The warning appears in a confidential 82-page report commissioned by the National Energy System Operator and revealed by the Mail on Sunday.

Tiree is the most westerly island of the Inner Hebrides with an area of just over 30 square miles and a population of approximately 700. The island is known for being relatively dry for the area with average annual precipitation of 1275mm / 50 inches which equates to under half of, for example, the English Lake District. Although subject to regular Atlantic gales it is deemed better sheltered than other isles and is one of the sunniest of all Scottish islands. Tiree is also noted as a “Historic Station” by the Met Office and this is where things get very dubious.

This doesn’t quite fit the current obsession with carbon dioxide, which makes a nice change. However, the usual ‘greenhouse gas’ assertions are still there in the background, but the idea that trying to reduce them could change the weather looks as weak as ever. The argument now is that Europe would have warmed more pre-1980 if the aerosols, which climate models underestimated, hadn’t got in the way.

Europe’s increasingly intense summer heatwaves may be partly linked to one of the great successes of modern environmental policy: The removal of air pollution, says Brussels Signal.

New research by scientists at the Barcelona Supercomputing Centre and the UK Met Office, reported by The Telegraph, suggests that the sharp reduction in sulphate aerosol emissions since the 1980s has not only allowed more sunlight to reach the Earth’s surface, but has also altered atmospheric circulation in ways that can intensify and prolong heatwaves over Europe.

The study, published in Geophysical Research Letters, examined why European summer temperatures have risen significantly faster than climate models had previously predicted.

It found that the decline in sulphate aerosols was a major contributor to the additional warming observed since around 1980.

Hemyock is a small village approximately 12km/7.5 miles north of Honiton in east Devon. This site may now be recently closed as there is some uncertainty as to the well being of the owner of this amateur site that has been a long term adopted weather station by the Met Office. Despite being in the owners rear garden it is unusually situated in its own enclosure and has clearly been well maintained and observed over a long period by them. This report highlights the unfortunate shortcomings of such amateur sites and also, more importsntly highlights yet again highly questionable location practises by the Met Office.

As well as being notoriously cloudy, Britain needs its electricity much more in winter than summer, but solar power works exactly the other way round, due to inevitable seasonal daylight hours variations. Everyone knows that of course, but current leaders insist on ignoring such realities in pursuit of their net zero climate fantasies. As well as the loss of good farmland, how long the national grid system can survive these policies without ever failing has become a serious question. The costs linked to avoiding blackouts are rising all the time.

Last week, Ed Miliband approved One Earth, Britain’s second-largest solar farm, says the Telegraph (via Climate Dispatch).

Spread across the Nottinghamshire-Lincolnshire border, it will have 740 megawatts of capacity and could power 200,000 homes. It followed approval for two more enormous solar farms, Peartree Hill in East Yorkshire and Dean Moor in Cumbria.

Britain is now carpeting farmland with glass panels at a startling speed, in pursuit of very ambitious solar power goals. All of which sounds worthy, even sensible, until you remember one salient fact. [Talkshop comment – nothing ambitious, worthy or sensible at all there].

A World Bank study ranks Britain second-to-last in the world for practical solar potential (only Ireland is worse); we are relatively dark, cloudy, and northerly.

Although there are still around 18 UK official operational Met Office weather stations for me to review, I will also now continue reviewing those sites suitable for inclusion in the construction of an alternative historic temperature record. So far the Rothamsted site is an obvious contender and a number of other current sites are good candidates. In this report I will reiterate the conditions required for inclusion, some of the means to overcome inevitably missing data and relate to investigations of closed sites in similar manner to the investigation of Raunds. Apologies for a slightly “drier” post but it is important to rationalise exactly where I am going with the Surface Stations Project. This is intended as much as a discussion and suggestions piece so any readers please feel free to comment or contribute.

According to the Met Office website ” Weather stations are found throughout the UK, typically spaced about 40 km apart, allowing for effective tracking of weather systems such as low pressure and frontal movements.” The above is a location map of all the Met Office weather stations that fall within a 40 km radius circle centred on the centre of London which just happens to be within a few metres of the St James’s Park weather station location. Within this 5,026 square kilometre area there are 14 weather stations – a remarkably high concentration compared to the rest of the UK and massively more concentrated than their claimed “typically spaced about 40 km apart”. This is a study of why this is so very important to feed a narrative for the Met office..

Records are now being “SMASHED!”, the climate has gone “BONKERS” and of course everything is “UNPRECEDENTED” like never before. We’re told: ‘Current climate models struggle to include microbial activity because of its complexity.’ Also: ‘Marine microbes play a central role in how carbon moves through the ocean.’ Putting those two remarks together suggests a rather large gap in the understanding of how the oceanic carbon cycle is working. Walney Island is a road bridge connected island in the Irish Sea just off the mainland at Barrow-in Furness. This area has in the past been variously in the counties of Lancashire, possibly Westmorland though now comes under Cumbria. The area has a long naval tradition that also developed into aviation with Vickers Aviation eventually becoming BAE. Airships started using a Walney aerodrome as early as the First World War with the runways built in 1940. Although the main runway (17/35) is currently only 3,317 feet/ 1013 metres there are tentative plans to extend and develop the site into an international airport.

No, I don’t think it’s a fully reasonable post in the way it’s presented.

The post (and similar Met Office communications) implies a straightforward “apples-to-apples” comparison between June 2026 and the 1976 summer at the same locations. However:

  • Station continuity is a real issue. You (and the Surface Stations Project work associated with Tallbloke) have documented numerous cases where Met Office stations have moved, changed instruments (e.g., from mercury thermometers to PRTs), or had significant siting changes over decades. A 3–4°C difference could easily be influenced by these factors rather than purely climatic ones.
  • If many of the quoted stations were not in their current locations/exposures in 1976, then the comparison is misleading without heavy caveats about homogeneity adjustments, site history, and metadata quality.

Solar railways could soon become commonplace in Europe, following a successful trial in Switzerland, says Euronews.com.

Europe’s infrastructure is embracing the renewables boom, with one company determined to transform the continent’s railway lines into mini solar farms.

Last year, Swiss start-up Sun-Ways unveiled the world’s first-ever solar railway after rolling out 100 metres of photovoltaic (PV) panels in between active tracks in Buttes, a village in the Val-de-Travers district.

Originally planned as just a three-year trial, the railway was fitted with 48 specially-designed solar panels with a combined power of 18 kWp.

Introduction

There is a widespread belief in the climate science community, both among mainstream and sceptic researchers, that the lapse rate (i.e. the observed decrease of air temperature with altitude in the troposphere) is caused by either greenhouse gases or convective overturning. The lapse rate plays a key role in the radiative “greenhouse” theory of climate change, since it is used to calculate a putative warming effect of increased greenhouse-gas (GHG) concentrations on the surface. The theory claims that heightened GHG concentrations raise the effective radiating altitude of the planet, which results in surface warming due to applying of the lapse rate over a longer vertical distance. However, this purely “geometric” explanation of the GHG warming is at odds with standard thermodynamics, which postulates that a system’s heat content and temperature can only be altered by either diabatic (heat exchanging) or adiabatic (pressure modifying) processes. The geometry-based warming hypothesis could not have been maintained for decades, if climate researchers had a proper understanding of the true physical nature of the tropospheric lapse rate. This briefing paper aims to correct the current misunderstanding on this topic using textbook-level atmospheric physics.

When discussing the lapse rate, it is important to distinguish between causative factors and factors controlling its magnitude. This article addressed the root causes of the lapse rate in a convective troposphere.

The new Bisterne weather station was recently installed in the grounds of Bisterne Manor which lies about 7.6 km/ 4.5 miles due north of Christchurch and is within the bounds of the New Forest National Park. The site has hosted a rain gauge since 1902 and is what would have been a “traditional” location for a late Victorian weather station though apparently none was ever installed. This is thus a review of a very new Met Office site that would not normally be available for public scrutiny lying within private grounds.
