Today, I saw a maple seed which I thought had fallen so that it was sitting vertically in the crack of short path just outside my fence. Upon closer inspection, I saw that the seed had actually sprouted in that crack, and it was pushing up the dry, brown "helicopter" wing part of the seed casing. How interesting!

Bucketful of sweetgum seedpods | February 10, 2026.

A whole bunch of sweetgum seed pods had been blown all over our walkway. Usually, most of them just nestle in the grass and only a few strays make it to the walkway. But due to the recent winds and the low temps maintaining a smooth layer of ice and snow in the yard, the pods slid and rolled to the shoveled walkway and got stuck there.

You can roll your ankle if you step on one of those pods, so I collected them this afternoon.

On the morning of December 23, we had a dusting of snow and sleet. I spied these paw-prints, indicating a critter had taken its exit, its passage temporarily preserved on our walkway. I took this photo around 1:30pm on that afternoon.

Earlier on this Monday – October 20, 2025 – I spied a pair of snoozing bees in my patch of blanket flowers. When I checked again after 6pm, they were gone. I'm hoping they warmed up and moved on.

We heard that, maybe, there was a chance of viewing Northern Lights here in PA on Labor Day night, Sept. 1 into Sept. 2. Well, we ventured out several times, but had no such luck. I did, however, get a nice photo of the Big Dipper looming over the local cemetery. So, there's that.
