So I’ve been thinking a long time about going to blogspot and going private. I wanted to do this before the baby came, but placenta brain took over and I completely forgot! So now I’m finally going to do it. So if you want to follow our adventures, send me your email and I’ll send you the invite. The new site will be srmedley.blogspot.com

First Dr. Visit
Keegan had a 5 day appointment with Dr. Katie to see how he was doing. I’m happy to report that all is well! He was moderately jaundiced, but not enough to worry about. Dr. Katie thinks he has my skin tone, which is more olive toned, so she was even less worried.

He was a good boy for the most part. He didn’t like getting naked and then placed on the cold scale, but he survived. I’m happy to report he was 20 1/2 inches long and back up to his birth weight plus a tiny bit! Instead of 7 lb 11.1 ounces…he’s 7 lb 11.2 ounces! The doctor was very impressed. We got a photo to brag about and because I had to take a photo and keep him on that scale 20 extra seconds, he sprayed all over the scale before we could get his diaper on.

Amy measured his head, his length and finally his weight. His head is in the 30th percentile, length 40th percentile and weight 50th percentile. His next appointment is his 2 week appointment on 5/21/09.

Happy Time
We found something Keegan likes and will actually keep his eyes open for.

What is it you ask?

Happy Gilmore!
I know he can’t really see the TV, but it was so funny to see him turn his head and just sit there and watch Happy Gilmore all night while laying on Rick’s lap. Our son has good taste already!

Oh Boy!
So I was hanging out downstairs blogging when Rick took Keegan upstairs to change his diaper. I hear this loud noise followed by “Shelly! Will you come help me?!” I had a feeling as to what I was about to walk into, so I had the camera on and ready. This is what I found…

So now I totally understand why you have to do laundry just about every day when you have a baby. We have 3 changing pads and I’ve already washed them all twice…he’s only 8 days old! This is obviously not the first time this has happened.
The other night he did the same thing to me. I had just given up on waiting for him to explode in his diaper, so I moved the dirty one and was placing the clean one when…Squirt! I managed to catch most of it on the outside of the clean diaper and all over my hand when suddenly my other hand is getting wet. I look up and Keegan is turning his head side to side wondering how in the world he is getting wet?! That was my turn to yell, “Rick! I need help!!” It took two of us to clean him and the mess up!!
Softball Guy Wins
Fabian invited Rick to play as an alternate in a softball league.
Low and behold, the first week available, Rick gets called up.
There was some confusion when Rick arrived, the team captain asked too many people to play on the team, so the captain asked Rick to go sign the roster this week and next time he would be ready to play.
Since Rick rode with Fabian, he decided he would go put his cleats away and just watch the game. When he came back, he was standing behind the dugout when he heard players yelling, “Who’s Rick? Where’s Rick? You’re up Rick.”
So Ricked looked at the captain and says, “You told me I wasn’t playing today.”
Captain replies, “I made a mistake, you’re up.”
Rick grabbed a bat and ran out to the plate. The umpire said, “You need a jersey.”
He ran and grabbed a jersey and was buttoning it up when the ump says, “I’m calling a strike if you’re not in the box in 2 seconds.”
So with 2 buttons done up incorrectly, he stood in the box.
The pitch was delivered and Rick swung wildly at strike one, giving everyone a good chuckle.
The umpire says, “You only need to swing at the strikes, not the balls.”
Rick said, “I’ll take that into note, but you rushed me; my jersey isn’t done up. I’ll try to do better.”
The wild swing Rick made must have given the pitcher ultra confidence, because he threw a meatball right down the center of the plate. Pissed off…Rick made great contact with the ball ripping it between the shortstop and the third baseman. With Rick feeling like he had something to prove to all of these high flying softball guys, he ran for his life legging out a double into a triple. This made for a close play at third base. There was no third base coach to tell Rick whether to slide or keep standing, so Rick decided to slide – YIKES!
Needless to say, Rick reached the base safely but got a little dirt on his knee. You see, Rick was the only one dressed in shorts and a t-shirt looking like he was going to a BBQ rather than to play in a softball game. Rick thinks the softball crew is a little eccentric and says, “chicks dig scars.”
I say that’s stupid.
Rick proved his worth to the team by going 2 for 3 with 4 RBI’s and was a good team player. He passed the tryout and came home with a pretty present for me.

Now to make something ugly a little more appealing…

05/07/09
1:00 am – I wake up to go the bathroom, nothing unusual here. I also feel a contration, again not unusual.
2:00 – I have continued with the contractions and with each one feeling like I need to go to the bathroom.
2:15 – I decide to go downstairs so that I don’t wake Rick. (Rick needs to be up at 6:15 for SLCC softball tournament)
3:45 – I decide to start timing my contractions on paper while I continue to catch up on Bones (all while on my labor ball.)
4:30 – by this time the contractions are more like every four minutes instead of every five minutes apart.
5:00 – definitely more intense and getting closer; starting every 3-4 minutes.
5:15 – by this time they are every 3 minutes at least, I decide to labor in the shower for a little while.
5:45 – out if the shower & thought I heard Rick awake. I tell him I think tiday us the day & we are going to have to go to the hospital.
6:00 – Rick makes some phone calls for work coverage; I call L&D to let them know I’m coming.
6:15 – we run to the school to do a little softball set up on our way to the hospital. I also called Mom to give her the heads up.
7:00 – we make it to the hospital.
7:15 – 4 cm, 90% with a bulging bag; I get to be admitted. Luckily I get room 2 – a tub room!
7:30 – make it to our room and discuss our labor plan with our wonderful nurse Sandy.
8:00 – Rick and Reed go to breakfast. I was going to go walk with them but changed my mind after walking down one flight if stairs and contracting in public.
8:15 – take advantage of the tub.
9:00 – things are tough. Good thing we took a class and Rick is a pro at counter-pressure.
9:15 – my water breaks all over the floor. Rick calls the nurse; I’m checked and ready to push.
9:15-9:30 – staff scramble to find someone to deliver my baby. I have to breathe through the contractions – no pushing allowed.
9:32 – I can finally push! Dr. Jessica Pittman (resident) will deliver with Dr. Denney as the attending.
9:45 – Keegan James Medley is born.
That is the brief timeline of my labor and delivery experience. No one expected me to go that fast, including me. So when my water broke I made Rick get on the phone to call my mom and sisters. My mom was on her way, Wendy wasn’t even close, and Jenny who works downstairs (and didn’t know I was there because my email didn’t go through), was able to leave work and run up to take photos and witness Keegan’s birth…my mom got there about 10 minutes after Keegan was born.

39 weeks
My appointment today was not so happy, only a tight 2 and still 80%…boo. On a positive note, Sam did strip my membranes. According to her, some women go into the labor the same day she strips, others she can do it 3 times in a week and nothing. It will probably be the latter one for me!
Dr. Draper was out sick, according to the midwives, he sounds awful! “He sounds like he has the swine flu.” I was advised not to go to labor today…no worries there.
I was told that at my next appointment we’ll talk induction dates…I sure hope I don’t go another week! If I do, I already told her we’re skipping the scale part!!
