3 new baby quilts

So , I am back blogging after a long silence . Hello .

Here are some baby quilts just finished & ready to be delivered to their tiny owners .

This is a quilt made up from the scrap remnants of my Leah Duncan

Meadow quilt

This cross quilt uses carolina chambray in black & 2 florals

The backing is from a collection by Brenda Riddle for Lecien & the + block & binding is Rosey by

Tanya Whelan

I purchased a collection of Denyse Schmidt's modern solids

with this simple design in mind

I downsized the pattern to cot size & backed it in the most sublime limey citrus

All 3 quilts were quilted by my friend Leone in the loops

I have cut into a fat quarter collection of Meadow by Leah Duncan

The blocks for a new quilt are almost peiced but the scraps were too pretty to consign to the scrap bin

so instead, I sewed up a small zip pouch and a minimal design for a small quilt

I'm wanting orange peel quilting here I think

Last week I went along to a trunk show at Fifi's Fabricology to see & hear Camille Roskelly

I have always admired Camille's fresh, clean quilt and fabric designs .

It was so much fun to see her work up close & get to meet her.

Such a talent & all round sweet girl.

Aren't we lucky !!!

Here is a little improv baby quilt

It's a bit texty + pink + grey

quilted in the wavy Bernina stitch

backed in a Dear Stella grey & white polka dot

& bound in one of my favourite textured solids

another blue quilt

This quilt is called "Flock of triangles"

from the book Quilts by Denyse Schmidt

it is my new absolute favourite

1) its blue 2) it's simple 3) it's quilted in straight lines

4) I love the backing , an Ikea print

I cut the triangles as directed in the pattern by cutting squares & sub cutting into triangles .

I had many bias edges !

These pieces were resewed far too many times & this quilt is quite wonky in places.

I still love the finished quilt wonky as it is :)

quilted in a "chicken wire " pattern

the hexagons were cut using this template

I used lots of fabrics but focused on some Anna Maria Horner Dowry & True Colours

plus some Botanics by Carolyn Friedlander

backed in widescreen by Carolyn Friedlander which has become my first choice in backings!!

108" wide & all my best colours

improv baby

This little improv pieced baby quilt was commisioned for a baby girl in Victoria

The pictures aren't perfect . This quilt has such a gentle , subtle look that doesn't translate well in these photos.The original inspiration comes from a quilt I had pinned from Blue Elephant Stitches.

I love just about everything I see there !!

I used a wavy stitch on my Bernina to give some quilty texture

The dollie blocks are from the book Material Obsession by Kathy Doughty & Sarah Fielke

a quilt design called The Burbs

The backing is a Liberty Tana lawn & it has a scrappy binding from past quilts .

zip pouch was whipped up to feed my current love of pink & black

This time a quilt made from all the handprinted fabrics that I've collected over the last few years

backed in a delicious nani iro gauze

I've been finishing up several small quilts that have been hanging around for a bit

including this little HST in 2 shades of grey +white +black & a little bit of pink

it measures 43"x 54"

is quilted in straight lines & bound in black & white stripes by Lecien

the solids are all by Art Gallery fabrics & quite silky

The backing ( oops forgot to photograph) is a soft chambray in pale grey by Robert Kaufman

I am working on a commissioned improv baby quilt & another from some pretty vintage fabric .

I'm also binding the hand printed textiles quilt ... so lots of pics coming up

The weather is foul February here ..... humidty + heat

I see all the snowy pics from the northern hemisphere & wish myself north , very far north .

angelina's quilt

This quilt was chosen by the child for whom it was made , she looked through my fav quilt pins & chose this quilt for her bed .

The original design is by Diane Melms whose work you should definitely check out.

Diane graciously allowed me to reproduce the quilt in a single bed size , the original measures 28"x22"

the wavy line quilting is perfect & done (beautifully) by Leone Ward

Some neon pink binding had been lurking on the shelf just waiting for such a quilt & backing is brilliant pink in Corsage by Alison Glass

This quilt will come with me to Sydney next week & find it's new home .

summer sewing

Our Liberty Love knows no bounds

these boxer shorts were sewn for my youngest daughter who is crazy for Liberty & animals

so it seemed this fabric was made just for her , it's called "Queue for the Zoo"

she has worn Liberty for a long time , this little dress was made from a print called Claire-Aude in pale blue

the little Briar Rose quilt is quilted & bound

ready to be sent off the baby girl great-grandchild of a dear family friend

I struggle to stay motivated in this ghastly humidity , bring on Autumn please !!

It was a challenge , hence the looong time it has been in the finishing

I am working on this strippy quilt

it grows by a strip a day

the original design by Diane Melms which measured 22"x28"

will be modified to single bed quilt size

It was becoming slightly overwhelming & it so good to see some progress.

been travelling

Long pauses here in smallquiltville , we've been on a long trip to London and France.

It was bliss , but all done now and back to our fairly uncomplicated daily rhythm

I have been slow to get back to some sewing mainly because of the oddity that is jetlag

Asleep at 7.30pm & wide awake at 2am

Yesterday I started back on Angelina's quilt , the bright strip stacks on neutrals

Visiting London also means the other L word

Liberty

I collected some pinks to share with my quilt group

I was given ( Jan & Vanessa xxx) Sarah Fielke's Hand Quilted With Love while away and want to use

some of the pinks to

make a baby sized version of The Bass Line

So there is plenty to be getting on with plus a brand new hospital & birth suite to get back to work in !!!

I'll do holiday snaps in a new post for those can be bothered .... I seem to be obsessed with trees & flowers !

My chicopee "birds to the nest " quilt is back from the quilter

clamshell quilting by Leone Ward that I'm absolutely loving

backed in a pale grey solid

I used 2 packs of Chicopee charm squares & some taupey grey linen

this one is a keeper

here's a sneaky shot of my wisteria in bloom

it's the other thing that's making me happy this week

I have been lucky enough to be part of a small group of quilters who meet each Thursday morning

Ruth Helen Lyn Leone Katherine + me

Leone is our very clever long arm quilter

A few weeks back she had delivered some finished quilts & here they are !

The quilts are untrimmed

This is Lyn with her gorgeous pinwheel quilt

quilted in the loopy style

large scrappy framed blocks cut into 4

+ long roundy quilted lines

churndash love

I have been pinning away at many churndash images

& finally got started on mine

I'm using a mix of 3 chambray fabrics & some Denyse Schmidt prints

+ a Free Spirit solid Citrine sashing

almost done , just need outer borders added

The chambray is super soft & such subtle blue-grey shades

on the downside it frays like a beast !!

Next up is this bright stack + a mix of pale neutrals

I'm intending to make a version of this quilt by Diane Melms

Diane was generous enough to allow me to use the design for a young friend who fell in love with it on my Pinterest page

Can't wait to get started

hand printed textiles in my quilt

I have been hoarding small cuts of my favourite hand prints to make a simple quilt for myself

I have selected a palette of grey blue teal white & cream

my favourites

and cut 10 & 1/2 inch squares

some squares needed cobbling together from smaller scraps

mostly linen cotton blends but some quilters cotton added to the mix

I have used prints by

beaspoke @ spoonflower

a Finnish print from Japan

echo by Lotta Jansdotter

& a Japanese linen solid

I'm now looking for a backing fabric worthy of so much independent talent

edit : I have splurged on some nani iro double gauze dots for the back

can't wait for it to arrive :)

I had 3 quilts to hand over to the quilter

so I got busy & made binding & backing for them

the black & white print & stripe will go on

the mad improv log cabin in the last post

Pink stripes & a sweet print from Aneela's Posy line

the wonky stars will be backed in the same Posey print & coral pink polka dots

can't wait to see them all quilted

a wee bit of pink

I have been sewing away the days & have some quilt tops to show you

This is the pink version of the Herringbone quilt

It is an orphan at the moment

I'm sure it will find a baby girl to keep warm before long

I'll quilt it in wobbly straight lines I think

I pulled all the pretties from my Liberty stack to make the 16 patch baby quilt from

Liberty Love by Alexa Abegg

the picture looks quite washed out , it is very pretty in the flesh

I'll get a better pic when it is quilted up

This little girly quilt was made on commission for my sister to give to a friend

using a fat quarter set of The Simple Life by Tasha Noel

Lastly , here is the improv log cabin all sewn up

It is at the quilters having the loopy treatment

It is lap size , for Zaac's sofa

We have spent a rainy long weekend in Byron Bay

& I have made a start on a knitted baby blanket

herringbone

Another baby quilt top is finished

I have admired this pattern for ever , the doing was quite simple

I used a fat quarter pack but a jelly roll would be even simpler

I'm all for simple

4 prints + a solid

sewn into strip sets & cut on a 60 degree angle

half left facing & half right facing

sew into vertical rows

matching all those vexing little seams

sew rows together & trim top & bottom

add a border & it's done

2 things I don't like about the way I put this together

1) I didn't like the waste of fabric ... there is a fair bit

I have seen another method of staggering the strips which would create less waste

2) the top & bottom edge was a bit wobbly after trimming

Having said all that I think I'll do a pinkish one

This is my new huge Liberty & linen tote for fitting absolutely everything I need

It measures 19"x 15"

The handles have a 12" drop so tucks comfortably under the arm.

It was constructed using the quilt as you go method onto bag batting .

ps the cake is a banana , walnut & chocolate loaf
