  • Grab your current read.
  • Let the book fall open to a random page.

I am reading Joseph Monninger's Eternal on the Water.  It is an advanced copy from Barnes and Noble's First Look program.  The book is due to be published on Feb. 16, 2010.  It is a beautiful book that I definitely recommend.  Teaser, from page 216: It was not an order.  It was a request, a kind that private secondary schools made regularly of their instructors.

The Ghosts of Belfast by Stuart Neville

The Ghosts of Belfast by Stuart Neville: Book CoverThe Ghosts of Belfast is published in Great Britain as The Twelve.  This is an astonishing debut novel and I personally hope to be able to read quite a lot more by Stuart Neville.

Gerry Fegan is an ex-IRA hit man.  He is being haunted by twelve ghosts of innocent people that he killed. The ghosts want revenge and Gerry wants redemption. I found this book extremely compelling and often disturbing.  I also found it to be enlightening about a part of Irish history that I have heard quite a lot about.  This is an amazing work of fiction but I still feel like I understand more about the people who were involved in this time in history.

I don't want to give any more of the storyline away.  However, I think it's a book well worth reading!

So Tired

It's only one week into the new year and I am so stinkin' tired! What is wrong with me? I didn't overdue it during the holidays so I don't think I'm recuperating from them.  All this week, I woke up in the morning and just wanted to go back to bed immediately.  Obviously, that's not possible, though.  I was supposed to have 12,000 words written toward my 2010 writing goal by today.  I'm nowhere near that at just under 3,000.  This is SO NOT like me at all!

I'm so glad it's the weekend.  I'm going to inform my husband that I am sleeping in tomorrow morning and he can get up with our girls! :) It's been a while since he's done that.  Maybe he should take Sunday, too.

Musing Mondays: January 4, 2010

Today’s MUSING MONDAYS post is about New Year reading.

With the New Year here already, do you have any reading resolutions or goals (challenges aside) for 2010? Perhaps a new author? Genre? Want to read more non-fiction? Write more reviews?

PLEASE LEAVE A COMMENT with either the link to your own Musing Mondays post, or share your opinion in a comment here (if you don’t have a blog). Thanks.

First, I'd like to say Happy New Year to everyone! I hope 2010 is the best year ever for all.

Second, as for reading resolutions - I have a goal to read 52 books.  I'd like to blog about all of them and hope that I am successful in doing so.  I am going to finish a challenge I started in October 2009 - to read 101 books in 1,001 days.  Other than that - I decided to forgo challenges this year.  I just want to read for the sake and enjoyment of reading rather than the sake of a challenge.

Finally, thank you to the many people - in my real life and here online - that give me book recommendations.  As a lover of the written word, I am always interested in a good book or a new (even if it's just to me) author.  :)

Happy Reading in 2010! :)

All the Books I Read in 2009

At the end of 2008 I was amazed that I had read a total of 43 books.  My goal for 2009 was to read 52 books.  I am happy to say that not only did I meet my goal - I surpassed it! In 2009 I have read 68 books! I kept track of all of them; giving them grades and personal reviews! :) Like last year, this was for myself but also for my daughters.

My goal for 2010 will once again be 52 books.  This just seems like a reasonable number when factoring in everything else in my life.  A life that I am exceedingly grateful to have! I hope my daughters and my husband know and feel just how much I truly love them.  I also hope that my daughters grow up realizing that it is very healthy for women to stay true to themselves and honor their interests.  My family does - and always will - come first but the books I read and the thingss I write are also very important to me.

WriYe in 2010

After completing NaNoWriMo in November (and winning it with 53,700 words) I went in search of another writing challenge. I found this one called WriYe which means writing year and was born from (but not by the same people) NaNoWriMo. Basically, you choose a word count that you want to achieve during the twelve months of a calendar year and go for it. Thankfully, it's acceptable to adjust your word count if necessary. I chose to do 500,000 words and already I'm wondering if 365,000 may have been more sane. Time will tell, I suppose. I'm anxious to get started, though. I discovered that I like having a deadline to meet. The challenge begins on January 1st and runs through December 31st and anything written goes. I'm anticipating getting a lot done in 2010. Of course, I still say I'm getting published next year, too! :)

Success & Failure

So to speak. I had taken on four reading challenges for 2009. I have a 50% success/failure rate. My challenges were: A-Z by author, A-Z by title, to read 52 books during the calendar year and to read 10 books which fall into the Erotica Romance genre.

Well, I am reading book number 68 for the year. I have also read the 10 Erotica books. However, the A-Z author and title challenges will not be completed. Honestly, I am perfectly all right with this. I got so tired of trying to choose books to read according to what I needed for a challenge. Blah. In 2010 I am going to read what I want - for the sake of reading and not a challenge. I will aim for the 52 books in a year again though because I think that's a nice goal.

In the big scheme of things - reading is never a failure but always a success.

Prioritizing & Scheduling

There are a number of things that are important to me. And some of these things, like scrap booking and journaling - even though they are important - have been put on a back burner in my life for one reason or another. I’m not proud of this and would like to rectify this in 2010.

First, I want to make a list of what is important to me. First and foremost, my family - my husband and my daughters - are THE MOST important people to me ever. They are a priority in my life every single day. Other things that are important to me are: writing, reading, exercising & staying healthy and scrapbooking/journaling.

Family & Reading: Every single day
Writing (which will include journaling & blogging): 2,000 words/day 5 days per week
Exercising: 1 hour 4 days per week
Scrapping: 2 - 3 days per week.

So, as anal as it sounds, I am going to literally start scheduling my days. I feel like I have to in order to achieve the things that are important to me and still be a great mom, wife and friend.

I also very much want to have two dates per month with my husband. I’d also like to see my friends - and have a girls day - at least once a month. I’m really happy that my friend G and I are starting our book club again, too. I have some ideas about a few people who might want to join us, as well. Anyway, if I could do book club and a girlfriend outing (with those friends not interested in book club) on the same day once per month that would be awesome!

So yeah, I've discovered that scheduling is necessary as a busy mom still trying to keep my own interests alive. :)

Gingerbread Cookies part 2

We baked the second batch of gingerbread cookies the other day. The batter and cookies from scratch were a little better tasting than the dough from the box but not much. I don’t know if the recipe we had just wasn’t the greatest or if the ingredients were slightly old. Perhaps the boxed batter was just better. I don’t know. My oldest daughter declared both her Daddy and I (and our gingerbread cookies) winners. She’s right too because we have her and her and her little sister for our daughters. :)
