Working Nights

I was coming back from driving a fare to the airport. The light at the big intersection turned an abrupt red. I mashed down on the brake. There was a terrible moment when I realized what was going to happen. Funny, but until then I actually preferred nights to days. Zigzags of early morning darkness crumpled like unworthy prayers in the fist of an angry god. It was such a long time ago, almost 40 years, the summer after freshman year of college. I don’t think about it that much anymore or about the dead leaves that were always falling.
