I have that same model that you have. I had gotten it from my grandfather after he passed away. I also got another GE that was still in the box. The one in the box was ok but had some issues. But the 3-5091A never really worked well at all. A few days ago I started looking at some of the cassette recorders again and decided to restore it. I took it apart and right away I saw there we issues with the drive belts (has 3 of them btw). The circuit board was loose (just a screw to tighten) But i'm trying to go for perfection here lol. So I drew my own schematic, that way I would know where every single wire went and what it was for. I desoldered all the wires, even with the schematic I wanted it to be easier to put back together so I used paint markers to color the holes where the wires of that color went. It's a 1 sided solder board so I made the marks on the non solder side. Got all the wires removed and the board out. What I did next was to pull the tape mechanism out and then removed all the old belts. I began to clean every single spot of grease off the moving parts that were accessable. I would press a button so it would slide revealing more areas to remove the grease. I went through both sides with a ton of q-tips and rubbing alcohol. Once I had that done I regreased every single area that had moving parts with silicone grease. I probably pressed each button about 50 - 100 times lol, when I was done you could feel how smooth it was to press the buttons. I then put on 2 of the belts which are only accessible with the mechanism out. and got it back into the casing. That was all today. Next i'm going to be replacing all the capacitors on the circuit board, then clean out the volume dial. I can't wait to see how this works after all that. It was nice to read your post and see people that still have love for these old units.

I was at this convention, and as I understand it NETLA - "The New England Time Lord Academy" made their first convention appearance at this con - they formed at an earlier convention (The "Starlog Festival" back in April of 1985) - But they had a table and membership recruitment. a LOT of people joined that day. (There was a smaller group of Dcotor Who fans called the "Boston Tea-Tardis" but they were kind of a clique of a bunch of fangirls with only a handful of male members..) I remember Kent and myself running hours of tape through the capstans! Good fun! Throw at 'em the phrase "...Bobby!? what a burp! Better use rope! Rope?! Yes, tie it around your neck!" It all came about us re-recording over and over, never re-cueing the tapes until all the recordings and conversations would get all garbled. That Bobby phrase came from a mixture of Godzilla and the Brady Bunch show. The burp was the cry of Godzilla, and Bobby? Now that'll do Bobby.

I haven’t been able to find the Throwback versions in any stores near me lately. I actually really enjoyed it, so it makes me sad to think they may have been discontinued already. So nice to see real food ingredients on the label, even though they’re still processed. Using real sugar instead of HFCS, and a healthy oil like olive oil for a bad oil like canola makes a huge difference in quality. The Throwback versions actually tasted savory and good, and we’re something I’d have about once a week, while the new ones just taste sweet and are otherwise bland, and I prefer to avoid them altogether.
