This was a fascinating deep dive into one of the strangest and most charming aspects of old monster design. I love how you pulled together all these little language notes—some of them feel almost like throwaway lines in the manuals, yet when you line them up like this they hint at entire alien cultures and bizarre forms of consciousness. The idea of scent-based speech, communal insect intelligence, dolphins with telepathic languages, and monsters with “vegetable intelligence of animal nature” really captures that wonderfully weird early RPG imagination. It also makes me appreciate how much world-building was hiding in those brief monster descriptions. Great read—now I’m going to start wondering what a full linguistic study of dungeon creatures would look like.
