We had a wonderful time at church today. There were a number of great songs from the Christmas program in our ward. I loved the version of "Go Tell It on the Mountain" that the choir sang. These songs are great, but I love to hear our kids sing even more. This evening, Rebecca was singing "When Joseph Went to Bethlehem." I loved it. And you can't beat Ruth's rendition of "Fringle Bells."<br />
<br />
Hope you are singing the songs of the season.Jaredhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18153835670539255998noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-929181024127348600.post-30844870479460378552013-11-06T07:58:00.001-05:002013-11-06T07:58:44.336-05:00Part of Being TwoRuth is two years old. She doesn't act two years old all the time, but she is a two year old. One way it is true, is when I try to leave for work. She doesn't want me to leave. I have to detach her from my neck or legs and pass her off to Mary. If I don't give her to someone else, she runs out the door after me.<br />
<br />
It is all about being a two year old around here.Jaredhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18153835670539255998noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-929181024127348600.post-90139785601683912152013-10-29T23:21:00.000-04:002013-10-29T23:25:04.181-04:00Ruining a Halloween TraditionWe don't have a many Halloween traditions. And our observance of the few "traditions" is less than 100%. But, it has been axiomatic that if we are going to carve our pumpkin, it would be after Halloween. This year, Mary promised the kids that we would carve the pumpkin before Halloween. Not only did she promise, she delivered.<br />
<br />
Behold, our jack-o-latern:<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgG4712EAue9WsZuzpVqPP6mltnmfQ7LsaHx__pYXPRODP3On-1k1GA9nBqo4ozf81VMXJlNpnn0r0tiW7u1yhazHLTjUo-UWv9FMzAToljqkA8XJEaEIGueAGYCf1jO9N6tlfglxCfC7wq/s1600/IMG_5558.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgG4712EAue9WsZuzpVqPP6mltnmfQ7LsaHx__pYXPRODP3On-1k1GA9nBqo4ozf81VMXJlNpnn0r0tiW7u1yhazHLTjUo-UWv9FMzAToljqkA8XJEaEIGueAGYCf1jO9N6tlfglxCfC7wq/s320/IMG_5558.jpg" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhRe9Q6VqsdMKe-E6g5fl_4mjKCmJ5wkwBLsSYWZ66fnOD8H6RQnzUlendzAIBs-XH_FbAhkwZLcq3kBmkv65V-kiVYmPt3y4wCJcQ0WzAxn-e7GfabAPCRPIcq8QbYrb3e3-AwmfezfKwl/s1600/IMG_5562.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhRe9Q6VqsdMKe-E6g5fl_4mjKCmJ5wkwBLsSYWZ66fnOD8H6RQnzUlendzAIBs-XH_FbAhkwZLcq3kBmkv65V-kiVYmPt3y4wCJcQ0WzAxn-e7GfabAPCRPIcq8QbYrb3e3-AwmfezfKwl/s320/IMG_5562.jpg" /></a></div>In order to understand the final product, a word on the process. Each child drew one part of the jack-o-latern's face. This gave us a bit of a Picasso effect without the artistic touch of said master. Oh well. I love it. And we will actually have something before Halloween.<br />
<br />
Could this be the start of a new tradition?Jaredhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18153835670539255998noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-929181024127348600.post-55502892368072459752013-10-27T00:33:00.001-04:002013-10-28T00:17:54.913-04:00OlderCaleb fell asleep downstairs tonight. Unfortunately, on Sundays she does not usually get one due to our church schedule. This leads to a little extra grumpiness on Sunday nights. In a response to this, we have tried to have earlier dinners. If the kids behave, then we will put on a movie after dinner. Ruth likes some movies and this will help stave off some of the craziness. This Sunday, we ate early because Grace and Mary had a meeting back at church. I put on Ruth's favorite movie, "Despicable Me," after dinner. We sat in the rocking chair and watched the movie together.<br />
<br />
It was time for a nap after the first 30 minutes of the movie, though I am not sure when Ruth fell asleep in my arms.Jaredhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18153835670539255998noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-929181024127348600.post-32267054184725171262013-10-19T07:08:00.000-04:002013-10-28T00:19:09.765-04:00The Great DivideTime for important questions: where do you land on the great divide? One of my personal favorites is disaster baby. I think it comes part and parcel with being the youngest child. She sees what all the other kids are doing and wants to do it. Unfortunately for us, she is highly successful at doing it as well. For example, we have had kids that could climb counters. We have kids using counters to get to things on high shelves. They get up for something. The difference for Ruth is that she is a climber. She gets up on everything. I am constantly getting her down from the counters, the table, the changing table and anything else she can scale. And climbing is just the start of the list. She gets into things, destroys things and constantly looks cute. I guess that is what being 2 is all about.<br />
<br />
Here is what two looks like.<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj-pCTdY3lnSXrWARAn0biN9ZO2r_Ka6H4jJmpLs5injoPuAl9CaMrYXp-6pzRbHVk34X5MOBgbCelQrdfYVUfBYapVpltVW5GBtqfwyw2Qms5hZDV8V88w6_9cFCZtxQkgrKompzXs85nP/s1600/IMG_6867.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; She is just built that way. This year, she has spent time running. She runs for exercise but not necessarily for time. Most years, she runs a couple of 5Ks and one 10K. She recently ran a 10K in 50:14 which is her personal best. If she can knock off another 25-30 seconds, she will be running sub eight minute miles. Even though she isn't running for speed, her consistency has helped her drop her time. Her hard work is really paying off. It has been a runner's high for her this year. <hr>On the other hand, there are some things that you can't really fight off. One of those things is the fact your children keep growing. Recently, Grace has surpassed Mary in height. Wonder how Mary has taken it?<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjI0CBvx94RjeVpDA7CYbqX4ZnVzt1PaLP7CGRx-oOhO1YrXion3Nal7UX8ejWFzfjNL10VNLCBKd9QVjFf79JTwlWfUJw9V1twiEgxWAy5Zdhihu_36iJnwlt3UgWuH34_IhgYgwZQVHOf/s1600/IMG_7015.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjI0CBvx94RjeVpDA7CYbqX4ZnVzt1PaLP7CGRx-oOhO1YrXion3Nal7UX8ejWFzfjNL10VNLCBKd9QVjFf79JTwlWfUJw9V1twiEgxWAy5Zdhihu_36iJnwlt3UgWuH34_IhgYgwZQVHOf/s320/IMG_7015.jpg" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg0WOsePD1BuWJybjMiMiuPPtfk3aSjLvPM3-w-2-h1SviZEiMDScRixkKXGavrrxRVBYdyoV2bLRsBoFIYzshYDj-MtzFI-XhyHxLdQkn2GuVAtAgrnOdKh-z_T-nzr0pqYZA-s9rHhU5r/s1600/IMG_7018.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg0WOsePD1BuWJybjMiMiuPPtfk3aSjLvPM3-w-2-h1SviZEiMDScRixkKXGavrrxRVBYdyoV2bLRsBoFIYzshYDj-MtzFI-XhyHxLdQkn2GuVAtAgrnOdKh-z_T-nzr0pqYZA-s9rHhU5r/s320/IMG_7018.jpg" /></a></div>Mary is squatting slightly in these photos, but Grace has recently grown a bit.Jaredhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18153835670539255998noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-929181024127348600.post-29436959991887555902013-10-15T08:30:00.000-04:002013-10-15T08:30:02.526-04:00Adventures in EatingWe went out to dinner last night. When we walked in the restaurant, Ruth saw a server with dessert. There was a lot of whipped cream on this dessert. Ruth thought it was ice cream and asked if she could have a bowl. Mary told her that she would have to eat her dinner before she could have ice cream. Mary then asked Ruth, "What are you going to eat for dinner?"<br />
<br />
Ruth looked in her eyes and said, "Ice cream." <hr>I asked Ruth was she wanted for breakfast this morning. She said she wanted "Life Cheerios." She told Mary the same thing. <hr>Rebecca wanted her leftovers from last night for breakfast. This means she ate a little bit of a chocolate Frosty, most of her macaroni and cheese and a bit of a bowl of plain oatmeal with craisins.<br />

You talk with your children, plead with them, cajole them and pray for them. Sometimes you just aren't sure that you are equal to the task of helping them realize their potential. I am still early in my parenting journey, but I have definitely worried about my kids. I worry how they will turn out and what they will remember about their childhood. My parents still have the same concerns and they have been parenting a lot longer than I have. So how do you know how you are doing as a parent?<div><br></div><div>One way that I measure my parenting is how I hear the kids act and speak when they don't think I am around. Recently, I overheard Grace telling Caleb that he is part of our family and he can do hard things. When I heard her say that, I was so happy. At least one of my parenting messages was getting through to Grace. I have realized I have to celebrate the victories whenever they come. </div><div><br></div><div>Tonight I celebrated a different victory. As Ruth was falling asleep, she got out of bed, curled up on the floor, put her arm around the basketball in the girls' room and fell asleep. She was holding the basketball in her sleep. </div><div><br></div><div>Now that is a sign of a kid that is being well raised. </div>Jaredhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18153835670539255998noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-929181024127348600.post-82455716754736264092013-10-13T21:29:00.001-04:002013-10-13T21:34:25.045-04:00An Observation on NicknamesOne of Becca's nicknames is Boo Boo. They have Monopoly at their house and Mary introduced Grace and Caleb to it. Caleb fell for it and asked for the game on his birthday. Joshua has had a hard time pronouncing Monopoly. He started with Monokuly. But he came up with a new one yesterday. He called it Moneyopoly. I think that captures the true essence of the game, don't you?Jaredhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18153835670539255998noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-929181024127348600.post-66476173142989785062012-08-11T10:29:00.001-04:002012-08-11T10:29:27.294-04:00Some People's KidsWe have been on vacation for the last few days. We returned from Colorado on Wednesday night. It was a great vacation, but due to the TV situation at our family reunion and my sister's house we did not watch much of the Olympics coverage. That has led to Mary and I watching the Olympics for the last three nights.<br />
<br />
Do you want to know how else wants to watch the Olympics at night? It is Joshua. Every night since we have been home he has crept down the stairs to sneak in a little extra Olympics coverage. We have known that he was on the stairs, but it has happened every night. I guess he likes the Olympics, but I was wondering what gave him the audacity to come downstairs after his bedtime. What kind of child would do that to watch the Olympics?Jaredhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18153835670539255998noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-929181024127348600.post-52070219509733253372012-06-04T08:58:00.001-04:002012-06-04T08:58:02.115-04:00A Bumper StickerI saw this one on the way into work:<br />

<br />
They are outside running around our block (or at least the equivalent for our area). Sally should be proud of me. Sometimes you just end up behaving like your mother. Jaredhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18153835670539255998noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-929181024127348600.post-45646272357564364952012-03-11T22:53:00.002-04:002012-03-11T23:13:16.661-04:00Parlor TricksJoshua, Rebecca and Ruth attended a lot of basketball games the past few months. Caleb played for the in town league and Grace played on an in town and a travel team. Many Saturdays, we had three games. Add in the two tournaments that Grace played in and the youngest three know their way around many gyms. The funny thing about bringing them to games is how their personalities come out. Joshua loves going to the games. He loves it because he wants to play with his friends. And no matter what gym we go to, he finds a friend and plays with someone. Rebecca loves the chaos of the gym. She knows her parents will be distracted by cheering or coaching, so she gets to run around. She climbs up and down stairs, bleachers and even closed bleachers. She craves a little more unsupervised time in her life. (Even though it is not a good thing for her.)<br />
<br />
I always thought that was all they were doing at the games. I recently learned how wrong I was. They have both spent the time in the gym working on some children tricks as well. What kind of tricks? Parlor tricks, of course.<br />
<br />
Joshua has learned the number of all 30 kids on the three different teams. If you give him a number from one of the teams, he can tell you the player's name. I guess he has a thing for numbers. He just picked them up because we don't really talk about Grace and Caleb's teammates in terms of their jersey numbers.<br />
<br />
Rebecca has taught herself how to dribble. Three week's ago, Rebecca, Caleb and I went to Caleb's game. Since I am a coach, Rebecca knew she was in for a serious lack of supervision. Halfway through the game, she came over to the sideline by me. I looked down and she was dribbling the ball. I think I have seen her get four or five dribbles in a row, but I think that is pretty good for a two-year old.<br />
<br />
It is fun to watch what the kids pick up.Jaredhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18153835670539255998noreply@blogger.com2
