But I want to pull out the Jesse Tree again this year, especially for my youngest.&nbsp;&nbsp;</p><p>I've misplaced my copy of <a href="https://manymercies.blogspot.com/2017/10/welcoming-christ-child-family-readings.html" target="_blank">Welcoming the Christ Child</a>&nbsp;(although I imagine it will turn up when I pull out all the Christmas boxes!), so I'm starting with the readings compiled from the old <a href="https://festalcelebrations.wordpress.com/category/jesse-tree-project/" target="_blank">Festal Celebrations</a> group. We still have our old ornament sets, but we don't have the tree up yet - so I thought I'd let the girls draw the stories as we go. They seem to do well when I keep their hands busy. I made these quick templates with 40 boxes, so they can draw a tiny new story every day. Here's hoping we get through all 40!<br /></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjzdkgmgIthN8VeZQZuWTaMmUVNbFwZlOMecF7cw6kaJ092yMnkPNJYAtTiO399iOnbYtTnvlPC0i5fmxdIG8NNYA5naNfu0wTDIh1IsTB6NIIK6umoOoiPWkDRNcQQ9y0yDLBDOvonsNbGFpHnHQSBhVSl57kZmoGt8qT9lUMZVSIyPxeZwH02qNdGues4/s3300/40%20boxes%20for%20nativity.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; We have several families who have not observed Lent before, so I wanted to make sure her meaning was very clear. (I think she's super fun, but I know some people think she's just weird!) I made the example above to demonstrate for my class in case we don't have time to cut out the legs in class, and will perhaps demonstrate tearing off a leg.&nbsp;<br /><br />I made a few changes, including the poem, to make clear that Lady Lent personifies:</p><p><b>1) fasting&nbsp; - </b>in addition to having no mouth, we will decorate her skirt with foods the kids eat during Lent after an activity about fasting.</p><p><b>2) prayer - </b>in addition to the crossed arms on her chest, I added the Jesus Prayer to the right side of the page to discuss in class.&nbsp;</p><p><b>3) almsgiving -&nbsp;</b>&nbsp;I added the last stanza to the poem to include "good deeds." We will also glue an apron onto her skirt, creating a flap we can lift to write our secret almsgiving plans. I used to do an <a href="https://manymercies.blogspot.com/2016/03/prayer-fasting-and-almsgiving.html" target="_blank">almsgiving planning activity</a> with my kids, in which I asked them to think of at least one act of kindness they could do each week for different people. When they were finished, we talked about giving in secret, and folded the papers in half to keep their plans private. My kids are all too old for coloring pages and toys now, but my 9 year old will still read a book during Orthros or at other times during the Liturgy. Recently, she's been reading the Action Bible, but I've had my eye out for some Orthodox books that might be more appropriate for her age. I love seeing St. Hermione's medical instruments, St. Saba's monastery, or the Byzantine map of Constantinople from the time of Pulcheria. That should be enough.]</i>&nbsp;</p><p>On Holy Thursday, or a few days before Pascha&nbsp;stuff them into a pot and pour&nbsp; 2 Liters of water over them, plus 4 TBSP of vinegar.&nbsp;&nbsp;<i>[Don't overdo the vinegar! It will break down the egg shell and make them look bad. Learned the hard way!]</i></p><p>It is important for all the onion skins to be submerged, so squish down the onion skins with a weighted plate. Bring this to a boil and then simmer for about a half hour.&nbsp;</p><p>Take the skins out.&nbsp;</p><p>Place hard boiled eggs in the simmering dye for about 10 minutes. <i>[Brown eggs make a deeper red. If you want to boil the eggs while you dye, you can do that too. It does seem like they take the dye better if it is simmering.]&nbsp;</i></p><p>When boiling the eggs, don't pile them up or let the water boil too rapidly or you will risk cracking the eggs. I usually boil a single layer (12 or so) on a low simmer for 10 minutes, repeating until I have enough.</p><p>Someone told me to polish them with olive oil to make them pretty and shiny, and I like to do that.&nbsp;</p><p><br /></p><p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhrrvaugKxeze5rx4g26TM8GbnWlsETFNBVRoKmtNEqCS-roI74n8ptNDzCcZd7NCldJ6v6eK2XmQRPSBWoqx2R_38_bsqxqdz7In4aE2cdcxGI8-IxQy5tagYLTtvCm7vRQ-jupNZ53EY/s1296/DSCN6480.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1296" data-original-width="972" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhrrvaugKxeze5rx4g26TM8GbnWlsETFNBVRoKmtNEqCS-roI74n8ptNDzCcZd7NCldJ6v6eK2XmQRPSBWoqx2R_38_bsqxqdz7In4aE2cdcxGI8-IxQy5tagYLTtvCm7vRQ-jupNZ53EY/w480-h640/DSCN6480.jpg" width="480" /></a></div><br /><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div>Laurahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00456283424247093909noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8524036180123456120.post-37103953527662505022024-04-26T08:20:00.000-07:002024-04-26T08:20:21.549-07:002024 HOLY WEEK PRINTABLES<p>&nbsp;I'm printing all my Holy Week resources today, and thought I'd share this updated list. I don't know why I keep making new ones, but I love this print so much I might also splurge on 2 yards for a table cloth. <br /><br />It's on spoonflower with and without the words "Christ is risen," both options in four different colors.&nbsp; <a href="https://www.spoonflower.com/collections/486102-spring-by-laurawilson" target="_blank">Check them all out here!</a>&nbsp; If you want to make a basket cover, choose from the larger prints (named "Easter") on a fat quarter. It usually takes two weeks for them to print and ship to you, and you will need to hem the edges. I'm going to use the smaller print (named Spring) for napkins and tablecloths.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi34fsrHJa5sjYTa9_6xU7YRsrTYeTRvmZMu_ua75V6-pUyKLjtDxjjsm2Ej9bsbu0mt-bKD5IOYc1CdEDYO-bh5ZZl8YWte0x9KG5kEEW0AZJXGL8TyZmKgdDSlLZBiqIHqCvyalgTZnQ/s500/blackspring.png" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="429" data-original-width="500" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi34fsrHJa5sjYTa9_6xU7YRsrTYeTRvmZMu_ua75V6-pUyKLjtDxjjsm2Ej9bsbu0mt-bKD5IOYc1CdEDYO-bh5ZZl8YWte0x9KG5kEEW0AZJXGL8TyZmKgdDSlLZBiqIHqCvyalgTZnQ/s16000/blackspring.png" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiy6PhAf-wcXrFFWZdo8zlE7ORYT3fr00PgGKyxAGQVTd4D43XbRLxq8M3UJJ6kwzpDLZuMez2rWRwtIoaGeAn0hpTdJP9G128EdgcQCnD1n3S29BDpOfPg-PZQ3iAb0RcDEw23sKk55tQ/s512/Easterlight.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="439" data-original-width="512" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiy6PhAf-wcXrFFWZdo8zlE7ORYT3fr00PgGKyxAGQVTd4D43XbRLxq8M3UJJ6kwzpDLZuMez2rWRwtIoaGeAn0hpTdJP9G128EdgcQCnD1n3S29BDpOfPg-PZQ3iAb0RcDEw23sKk55tQ/s16000/Easterlight.jpg" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjnt_-7e8weXuBXl7n2nbJRyxcKGa7ds9SY8RPuIJu9mvnYb7VQxtGp4XmxjRWeCbo6AxluYMNMZ4EdGO-4dLLAgebw5_ST14fzqdl7zQUj5ySXeQktGhg2auCwwnQh6YKRWCkyRGwxiaQ/s500/green+spring.png" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="429" data-original-width="500" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjnt_-7e8weXuBXl7n2nbJRyxcKGa7ds9SY8RPuIJu9mvnYb7VQxtGp4XmxjRWeCbo6AxluYMNMZ4EdGO-4dLLAgebw5_ST14fzqdl7zQUj5ySXeQktGhg2auCwwnQh6YKRWCkyRGwxiaQ/s16000/green+spring.png" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjneuf2PuL_aoWfV_FMXULJIsxyvmmyz-2nFEwQO__CIACdT6keC2xaIgMpdcn5oAzbxJ_Qqn2ShlaiQw4CsqbZ1mAiysgoJsnlshCzs3IkZgepkXw_1i-5p1TaBj320HUf_gYXB2d5P1g/s500/purple+spring.png" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="429" data-original-width="500" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjneuf2PuL_aoWfV_FMXULJIsxyvmmyz-2nFEwQO__CIACdT6keC2xaIgMpdcn5oAzbxJ_Qqn2ShlaiQw4CsqbZ1mAiysgoJsnlshCzs3IkZgepkXw_1i-5p1TaBj320HUf_gYXB2d5P1g/s16000/purple+spring.png" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">I'm having so much fun, I also put it on <a href="https://www.zazzle.com/springtime_easter_card-256542055501309243" target="_blank">greeting cards</a> and&nbsp;<a href="https://www.zazzle.com/springtime_easter_tee-235505604136629297" target="_blank">t-shirts</a> on zazzle.&nbsp; If you want to print your own Easter Cards, I made a less ink version below for you. (1 Thessalonians 5:17) He travels down the road, asking the people he meets if they can teach him about ceaseless prayer. When the monk teaches him the Jesus Prayer, he is overjoyed and begins his practice. He is filled with gratitude and joy.&nbsp;<br /><br />The book doesn't attempt to retell the story exactly, but clearly refers to passages from the classic. Older children might enjoy reading more of the encounters told in the original. This picture book offers younger children a similar sense of watching this wanderer search and grow in a life-long quest for prayer and love for Christ.</p><p></p><p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiiSmnfv-YWL-oeJyDqdHORrTcpZJXPfaYxG9kZH9puY6FfKkry7C2LsUSff8KvWRWrS7S8J-xQQQiZTDQQA-_9xqKYJ7ZqbxUi6vkwYRD9RzcInczUBZ_H-UDe4215_5uSw4_P9J7IEmFChhpwR08EThkFZ0sKREEN2BISOVxngO9gU6w6yGNNUEz_CYUC/s3024/PXL_20240305_151552036.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="3024" data-original-width="3024" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiiSmnfv-YWL-oeJyDqdHORrTcpZJXPfaYxG9kZH9puY6FfKkry7C2LsUSff8KvWRWrS7S8J-xQQQiZTDQQA-_9xqKYJ7ZqbxUi6vkwYRD9RzcInczUBZ_H-UDe4215_5uSw4_P9J7IEmFChhpwR08EThkFZ0sKREEN2BISOVxngO9gU6w6yGNNUEz_CYUC/w640-h640/PXL_20240305_151552036.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><br />I'm always particular about illustrations, and I just adore these by Diana-Elena Popescu. While there are many unknowns about this ancient office, we can see the church's theology in their lives and ministries.&nbsp;<br /><br />Someday, I would love to paint icons of many of these saints. In the meantime, I created this illustration&nbsp;featuring fourteen deaconesses commemorated as saints in the Orthodox Church. I put the most famous saints in the center, Phoebe and Olympia. They span from the first through tenth centuries, from Gaul and Rome, to Constantinople and Cappadocia, and to Syria and Alexandria. At least 10 of them were likely ordained with either with the prayers in the Apostolic Constitutions, or with the Byzantine rite for the ordination of deaconesses. There are three martyrs, two bishops' wives, many teachers and abbesses, and all ascetics.&nbsp;</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhL2aQsuXyXQ3QI8pu8agNRN7XzU1nqnjCOZMhyaSXijgsFmqWKBNsZHRaapdcEJpDX_vMzyRU4uMHxmU9TxOaU73-ayvgRl6tdAofpJFd23K1tkdmEIDY7HNVej1OPL3XKRjZImhwE2yedXXrUNahjcNfyk7dHyXdhmKmMegmi7c4_4xTsw1yw7J1YkUht/s1516/PXL_20231208_203208478.PORTRAIT~2.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-align: center;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1516" data-original-width="1516" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhL2aQsuXyXQ3QI8pu8agNRN7XzU1nqnjCOZMhyaSXijgsFmqWKBNsZHRaapdcEJpDX_vMzyRU4uMHxmU9TxOaU73-ayvgRl6tdAofpJFd23K1tkdmEIDY7HNVej1OPL3XKRjZImhwE2yedXXrUNahjcNfyk7dHyXdhmKmMegmi7c4_4xTsw1yw7J1YkUht/s320/PXL_20231208_203208478.PORTRAIT~2.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><p><br />You can grab the coloring page to print. Fortunately, I saved the instructions and will share them here for posterity with thanks to the Williams Family.&nbsp;<p></p><p><br /></p><p><b><u>Yellow Onion Skins Method&nbsp;</u></b></p><p><i>Originally from: http://williamsfamilyadventure.blogspot.com/2011/04/blood-red-easter-eggs.html My additions in brackets.</i></p><p>Gather lots of yellow onion skins. <i>[I actually keep a grocery sack in my pantry and collect them all year. Leave the sack open so they dry out and don't get moldy. If you don't have enough, buy a sack of onions and take all the skins off! That should be enough.]</i>&nbsp;</p><p>During Holy Week, a few days before Pascha <i>[on Holy Thursday between morning Liturgy and evening Passion Gospels],</i> stuff them into a pot and pour about 1.5 liters (or quarts - they are the same, pretty much) of water over them, plus one tablespoon of vinegar per cup of water. That is 4 tablespoons (or 1/4 cup) for a liter. I use white or pale vinegar. <i>[Don't overdo the vinegar! It will break down the egg shell and make them look bad.]</i></p><p>It is important for all the onion skins to be submerged, but, at the same time, you don't want to dilute the dye by using too much water. So squish down the onion skins with a weighted plate. Bring this to a boil and then simmer for about a half hour. If, say, I had less than the desired about of onion skins, I might keep on simmering for longer, to extract as much color as possible from the skins. But, like I said, I usually have more than enough onion skins, so a half hour is enough to produce a deeply colored dye.</p><p>Cook the eggs at the same time as dying them. <i>[I think you can take the skins out now, but I also think I've done it both ways.] </i>If you want, you can hard-boil the eggs first, and then dye them (I don't know how much longer the dyeing would take without the heat, but probably not a significant amount of time). Certainly, that would be the way to go if you draw or write on them with wax before the dying process (to leave an imprint in the dye). Otherwise, the wax would melt off into the dye.&nbsp;</p><p><i><b>My concluding remarks:</b></i></p><p>I usually make 40-50 eggs for our little parish, and the concern is to dye them without cracking. You can't pile them up or let the water boil too rapidly without risking cracking. I usually boil a single layer (12 or so) in the low-boiling dye for 8-10 minutes, repeating until I have enough.</p><p>One year I had a full gallon size bag of onion skins and doubled the recipe to make a very full pot. I don't think this is necessary since I don't like to layer the eggs while dying/cooking. Fewer skins will still go a long way.&nbsp;</p><p>Someone told me to polish them with olive oil to make them pretty and shiny, and I like to do that.&nbsp;</p><p>I keep them in a basket in the fridge until Holy Saturday morning, when I take them to the church and leave them in the fridge for the evening service. Pour into the prepared cake pan. Bake for 40 minutes in the preheated oven. Remove and gently drop the coin in to the cake. Flip the cake out of a pan to a cooling rack. Cool for 10 minutes, then decorate with white sugar and almonds or whatever.</div>Laurahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00456283424247093909noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8524036180123456120.post-91931681591904594832020-12-31T14:22:00.001-08:002020-12-31T14:22:43.813-08:00Righteous Tamar<p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg_Ou4pGwLc5Tzs99D8v75Pz3TJrgMuiGGqY2tVO0Rq9zgMssn92l4vHcsm7xfFMGUN1NexZIh5h5iHRgsQNsPU3vKS4slk4YBRGqsr8qaKJYHvG9rTxnAzzcLEjAH2LgBxbiqvayqZ5l8/s2048/Tamar3.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2048" data-original-width="1365" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg_Ou4pGwLc5Tzs99D8v75Pz3TJrgMuiGGqY2tVO0Rq9zgMssn92l4vHcsm7xfFMGUN1NexZIh5h5iHRgsQNsPU3vKS4slk4YBRGqsr8qaKJYHvG9rTxnAzzcLEjAH2LgBxbiqvayqZ5l8/w426-h640/Tamar3.jpg" width="426" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><span style="font-family: inherit;">&nbsp;<span data-offset-key="fmdu7-0-0" style="background-color: white; color: #050505; white-space: pre-wrap;">I'm researching St. Ephrem the Syrian's unique attention to </span><span style="background-color: white; color: #050505; white-space: pre-wrap;">Tamar</span><span data-offset-key="fmdu7-2-0" style="background-color: white; color: #050505; white-space: pre-wrap;"> in Genesis 38. Twenty-two women authors (including me!) with a variety of writing styles contributed brief reflections on scripture related to personal experiences of struggle and perseverance. Many of the entries are raw, and I found myself taking deep breaths as a I related to their words. It has been a dark year, but Christ is with us even here and now, urging us ever onward. This isn't a devotional book full of answers, but it is full of brave and true women confronting the darkness while clinging to and wrestling with scripture.&nbsp;</div><div style="text-align: left;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: left;">The book is organized into 9 weeks of devotionals, thematically arranged. Each week begins with a lovely gothic style illustration and a poem (especially feature the work of Allison Boyd Justus, who I dearly admire). It would make a lovely bedtime read (or morning, if you're one of those people!), especially suited to those in need of a light in the darkness.&nbsp;<br /></div><div style="text-align: left;"><br /></div><blockquote style="border: none; Church School Videos<p>Hey friends, I'm making some short videos for use in virtual church schools (or families to use at home in lieu of church school). I'm preparing two videos per month through May. September and October's videos are already up. Each video presents a lesson briefly based on Scripture readings through the church year, which families or teachers can share with kids. Each lesson comes with a variety of class ideas, including discussion questions, icons and hymns, activities and crafts. Feel free to use and share.&nbsp;<br /><br /><a href="https://wisdomchurchschool.blogspot.com/" target="_blank">Wisdom!<br /></a><a href="https://wisdomchurchschool.blogspot.com/p/resource-guide.html" target="_blank">Resource Guide<br /></a><a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xcrwgb_PQao&amp;list=PLrcny5bqcuvzpGXbZNtnigfM8gM98_w8l" target="_blank">Videos</a><br /><br /><br /></p> <div style="text-align: center;"><iframe allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture" allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/videoseries?list=PLrcny5bqcuvzpGXbZNtnigfM8gM98_w8l" width="560"></iframe></div>Laurahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00456283424247093909noreply@blogger.com0
