SUMMER CREATIVE WRITING WORKSHOPS
I will be teaching a couple creative writing workshops this summer in Marblehead, MA. Last year I did a novel-writing one. I've also done screenwriting, advanced writing intensives, and beginner & intermediate workshops aimed at plotting, character development, and structure.
I'm currently taking suggestions for this summer's topics as well as your preferences for dates, times, and formats (i.e. do you prefer meeting over several weeks for a shorter period of time? Or for a longer period of time, over just a couple weeks?). E-mail me with your thoughts. I will have dates and course descriptions out by March 1st.
NEW THIS SUMMER - ONLINE CREATIVE WRITING COURSE
I will be offering an online creative writing course this summer! I will provide weekly lessons and exercises and then, as a group, we'll meet online at a designated time and at secure chat site to discuss the week's lesson and all-things writing. More info coming soon.

DEADLY LITTLE LESSONS has been nominated for the Teen Choice Book of the Year through the Children's Book Council. It's in such good company. Go vote for your favorite titles for 2012 here: http://www.teenreads.com/2013-teen-choice-book-of-the-year-nominees
KARMA CHAMELEON STORE
With the help of Spreadshirt.com, I've opened up a merchandise shop with book-inspired products. It's all very new, so suggestions of any kind are welcome. The most exciting part is that I'm donating my proceeds from the sales of the products to First Book, an organization that strives to provide children, regardless of their economic conditions, access to an ongoing supply of books. Learn more about First Book here: www.firstbook.org. And check out the shop here: http://lauriestolarz.spreadshirt.com/
KARMA CHAMELEON CONTEST RESULTS
Congratulations to Carmelita, Tia, Amber, and Ronette, winners of the Karma Chameleon good-karma contest! See their amazing stories below. Great work!!!
Carmelita's crisis team volunteer project: "I have been working with a family assistance crisis team. We help women, (and sometimes men), who are victims of domestic violence. I recently had one woman who was there before my shift with a broken nose, two black eyes and a few missing teeth. As I helped her fill out the report, she told me that her ex-husband did this in the store parking lot in front of her son. People ask me why I volunteer to help women who will often never leave their situations. I tell them that it often takes seven to eight instances of abuse before the woman will leave her abuser. She often has children with her abuser, which is another reason why she won’t leave. Other factors are financial or religious. I try my best to make a safety plan so women know how to protect themselves and what to do if they ever want to leave the abuser. I remember one night a woman and her son came in asking if they could go to a shelter. As I was making the report, I could hear the little boy's tummy rumble from hunger. The mom apologized for her son. I left the office, got my lunch, and gave it to the mom and her son. Two weeks later, the mom came back and told me that she was thankful for that night. I started crying because I didn’t think much about it. It's so important for people to know that when it comes to domestic violence, they are not alone."
Tia's gift-giving project: "I have a friend who was saying that her grandchildren weren't going to get anything for Christmas because she didn't have the money. I called her and asked what she wanted to get them. She said a new outfit. She gave me their sizes and I bought all six of her grandkids an outfit, a pair of pajamas, and a bath toy. I drove the gifts an hour away to her house, and dropped them off with wrapping paper and tape. I told her to wrap them up and give them to her grandchildren and to say they were from her."
Amber's food drive mission: "I just finished working on a food drive with a public charter high school that my father teaches at. This school is 100% military, located in Anderson Indiana. The town was devastated about ten years ago when the local GM factory closed down. The community crashed and left the people in need of jobs. The community is still not as grand as it used to be, but it is getting better every day. Every student at the school is required to do a minimum of 24 hours of community service each year. I helped the students get some of these hours marked off by holding a fundraiser. The school wanted to have a dance to have some fun without having to be in uniform. This event was a social and a dance and a fundraiser. We decided that instead of having the cadets/students pay to get into the dance that they would pay by bringing in a couple cans of food. After the dance, we wanted to keep getting cans, so we extended the food drive for a while to get more cans. Over about two weeks, the school was able to come up with a little over 1,000 cans of food for the local food banks."
Ronette's "Build the Library Book Club" project (at the 5:43 mark):
