Moving millions of board feet of massive old-growth timber from inland forests to coastal sawmills, and eventually to California’s expanding cities, required extraordinary feats of maritime engineering. What began as simple river driving evolved into giant flat log booms and, ultimately, the world-famous ocean-going Benson rafts.<div><div><br></div><div>In the mid-19th century, loggers floated loose timber down river tributaries. On calmer stretches of the Columbia, logs were organized into flat, single-layer floating enclosures known as log booms. Bound together with perimeter boom sticks and swifter cables, these rafts were easily towed by steam tugboats downriver to mills in Portland, Vancouver, and Astoria. However, flat booms were unsuitable for the open ocean. Rough swells easily broke the cables apart, scattering millions of board feet of valuable timber into the Pacific.</div><div><br></div><div>To bypass exorbitant railroad freight rates and satisfy Southern California’s massive construction boom, lumber magnate Simon Benson perfected a revolutionary ocean-going log raft in 1906. Built along the lower Columbia River (primarily near Clatskanie, Oregon, and Stella, Washington), these giant cigar-shaped rafts were designed specifically to withstand the 1,100-mile ocean voyage down the Pacific Coast to San Diego.</div><div><br></div><div>A massive wooden frame resembling a ship’s hull was anchored in calm river sloughs. A crane operator layered thousands of logs in an overlapping pattern (like brickwork) so no single transverse seam ran through the raft. A heavy center chain ran the length of the raft, connected to radiating circle chains that wrapped tightly around the outside perimeter. Once the cradle sides were unbolted, high tide lifted the ocean-bound raft free. Crews often stacked finished lumber, telephone poles, and shingles on the flat top deck before towing.</div><div><br></div><div>Between 1906 and 1941, 120 Benson rafts successfully navigated from the Columbia River to San Diego, supplying lumber for major southern California landmarks. Only 4 were ever lost or severely damaged by storm weather.</div><div><br></div><div>The practice came to an end due to several factors. High-profile raft fires in 1941 made insuring ocean-going log transports difficult. Prolonged saltwater exposure caused wood warping and left salt residue that damaged sawmill blades and wood-fired boilers. She completed vocal, piano, and dance lessons and joined the choir at the Komische Oper Berlin as a teenager. Although she initially envisioned a stage and vocal career, director Max Mack persuaded her to transition to film. She made her screen debut in the short film <i>Whims of Fate</i> (<i>Launen des Schicksals</i>, 1912) and quickly established herself as a popular star of silent romantic comedies and dramas.</div><div><br></div><div>By the mid-1910s, Neumann was one of Germany’s leading film stars. Her popularity led studios to release a designated &quot;Lotte Neumann&quot; film serial in 1917. Taking control of her artistic output, she founded her own production company, Lotte-Neumann-Film-GmbH, in 1916. Through her company, she produced and starred in several films, including <i>Die Richterin</i> (1917) and <i>Schatten der Vergangenheit</i> (1919), making her one of the rare female film producers of the silent era.</div><div><br></div><div>Following the dissolution of her independent company in 1919, Neumann signed with UFA, Germany’s dominant film studio. Throughout the 1920s, she maintained high demand across European cinema. She starred in Ernst Lubitsch’s comedy <i>Romeo and Juliet in the Snow</i> (<i>Romeo und Julia im Schnee</i>, 1920). Other major successes included <i>The Brigantine of New York</i> (1924) and<i> A Woman for 24 Hours</i> (1925). She took on contracts in Austria, Italy, France, and Prague, making her an international screen favorite.</div><div><br></div><div>With the arrival of sound cinema in the late 1920s and early 1930s, alongside a lengthy, publicized divorce proceeding between 1929 and 1932, Neumann stepped away from acting. Her final onscreen appearance was in <i>Die Liebesfiliale</i> (1931).</div><div><br></div><div>She subsequently reinvented herself as a full-time screenwriter. She began writing under the pen name C.H. Diller (using her mother’s maiden name). In 1935, she married director and screenwriter Walter Wassermann, with whom she co-wrote numerous popular screenplays until his death in 1944. Neumann is credited with writing or co-writing around 25 feature films, including <i>The Beggar Student</i> (1936), <i>Sergeant Berry</i> (1938), and <i>Kora Terry</i> (1940). Her debut film for the studio was the comedy-drama <i>Telling the World</i> (1928) opposite William Haines. Her breakthrough came playing the tragic, mercenary Ann “Annikins” alongside Joan Crawford in <i>Our Dancing Daughters</i> (1928). The flapper drama was a massive hit and launched both actresses into mainstream stardom. Some of these photos were included in the magazine <i>Vanity Fair</i>. She was working her way from a dancer in prologues to chorus girls to bit parts in movies to becoming a star. These photos, taken by Hungarian-American photographer Nickolas Muray, show Loy in a peasant dress indicating her “exotic image” that she was cast as in the early years of her career.</div><div><br></div><div><div>Before becoming Hollywood’s quintessential “ideal wife” opposite William Powell in <i>The Thin Man</i> (1934), Loy was consistently typecast in late silent films and early talkies as an exotic, dangerous, or mystical temptress—an image reflected in this bohemian, rustic costume and theatrical pose.</div><div><br></div><div>During this pre-Code era of cinema, studio executives frequently cast her in exotic, “exotic-vamp” roles, a theme that Muray’s atmospheric lighting and styling beautifully captured.
