The question of awareness is an important one, I agree. And the lack thereof frustrates me to no end. However, I don't think everyone in Israel worries or even thinks about the future of the Israeli state all that much. Also, I firmly believe peace starts with each individual, even though in general, I think it'll be decisive for this planet's future whether we'll be able to change global political discourse from ego-(state-)centric views and old-fashioned political concepts towards new, more capable models and stances.
And, of course, I hope both "the belly" and "the house" are doing fine ;-).

Just another quick note: I think that it's sad but actually true that the majority of Germans have never met a Jew, or at least not knowingly. It certainly was a first for me when I came to Israel in 2005, even though the Jewish community in Hamburg is not that small. There is a lot of insecurity and fear around the issue of "being Jewish" in Germany, because of 20th century history being what it is, and that's not only for the Jews but also for whose who are old enough to remember the war or who lived with the baggage of it in the 50s, 60s and onwards. It'll probably be better for the generation that was born after 1989.

Just a note on the German railway (DB): It is NOT always on time, and the service people are considered really unhelpful and unfriendly. It has become some sort of a running gag, even. I'm so glad you had a different experience.
Thanks for highlighting the baggage of that means of transportation, because it's easy to forget, and I don't think the DB has done a thorough investigation of the company's involvement and benefits during the time of the holocaust.
Did you see the "Stolpersteine" in Berlin, Munich and Stuttgart? They are small copper flaggings embedded in the sidewalks in front of building where Jews used to live before or during the war. They have the names, date and place of birth, and the date and place of their eviction and/or death on them to make the remembrance as personal as possible. You'll find them all over Germany.
