Kick Off Your AthFest with Monterey Pop

The Monterey Pop Festival took place 45 years ago this week on June 17-19, 1967, inventing the rock festival, kicking off the Summer of Love, and generally blowing the minds of an entire generation. This week's Athens rock festival known as AthFest is part of this proud tradition, which was first documented by filmmaker D.A. Pennebaker. His film "Monterey Pop" is widely acknowledged to be the best rock documentary ever and the originator of the form that continues today.

In honor of AthFest, 6X6 is collaborating with Ciné to present this hallmark of counterculture at a special event on Wednesday, June 20th at 7:30 in the theater, free with an AthFest wristband or a reduced admission price of only $5.00. Come immerse yourself in the moment when everything changed, including the introduction of Jimi Hendrix, the Who, Janis Joplin, and Otis Redding.

In addition to the usual 6X6 and Ciné fun (drinks, popcorn, door prizes) we are privileged to have esteemed speaker JoE Silva from the WUGA radio show Just off the Radar to help us understand why this movie is so special. Waiting for the Piano Lesson

Set your metronomes: part 1 of the non-awaited and rapidly created 6X6 movie production "Mazurka," will be shown this week on Wednesday, April 4th at 8:30 PM in the Ciné Lab. The story of two siblings, their quests for love and serenity, and the best song ever, this production features a cast of Athens characters near and dear to us all, including Darin Beasley, Jim Willingham, Christina Cotter, Mike Landers, and many more musicians and music lovers. Your video responses to the Mazurka call will also be featured along with the usual ridiculousness. As always, fast, fun, and free -- please note that we will be starting later than usual, allowing you more time to practice.

We are quietly pleased to announce the impending birth of the 6X6 movie production "Mazurka," the story of two siblings, their quests for love and serenity, and the best song ever. As always, 6X6 seeks to co-parent with the world, so we are also announcing a call for submissions for possible use in the movie, as well as in the associated 6X6 Mazurka event on April 4, 2012. We seek submissions in three categories:

Ayers Occupies Ciné

The next chapter of 6X6 partners with the Ciné gallery to present the work of photographer Jeremy Ayers and his vibrant, textured, and topical images of the Occupy Wall Street movement. A natural extension of his daily practice of chronicling the streets and strangers of NYC with his camera and unique visual sensibility, Ayers was ideally positioned to dive into the populist occupation and outcry back in its inception in the early autumn 2011, becoming an ally to and photographer of the movement through the publication Occupy!, a semi-regular, forty-page broadsheet newspaper produced by n+1, the acclaimed print magazine of politics, literature, and culture.

Ayers will share slides and talk about the Occupy movement and his images on Wednesday, March 7 at 8:00 pm as a closing event for his exhibit, currently on view in the Ciné gallery. Plan to come and get a taste of what the wide world is doing out there in the big streets of the city, through the eyes of Athens' original hybrid talent, style icon, and gentle spirit.

Get ready for the first 6X6 Media Arts Event of 2012, featuring the innovative musical collaborationist Kai Riedl. He will be sharing music from his latest collaborative project with Electrophoria and the premiere of his new generative audiovisual work. Additional video projections will feature the work of Nick Gould, Ken Henslee, Lauren Fancher, and Lisbon artist Jan Van Bruggen. Kai Riedl is a musical collaborationist who seeks new approaches to cultural diplomacy through art, embracing geographic and creative constraints while connecting audiences and performers through electronic media.

Riedl's pioneering abstract rock music group Macha gained international acclaim for its stylized multiculturalism, which integrated Indonesian music styles and instruments. Riedl appears on many recordings by Athens bands, including the "supergroup" Tuatara (with members of R.E.M and the famed poet Coleman Barks). He also coordinates visits and performs with a variety of international musicians -- including distinguished artists from India and Indonesia -- at the University of Georgia.

Riedl recorded and produced Javasounds, a twelve-volume series of traditional Indonesian music, over the course of six years and multiple trips to western and central Java, Indonesia. This monumental work became the basis for "Our New Silence," through which Riedl and a collection of diverse local musicians built upon portions of the multi-track recordings to produce new works.

Riedl has received two research grants from the Center for Humanities and Arts at the University of Georgia, as well as a Project Development Grant from Ideas for Creative Exploration (ICE), an interdisciplinary initiative for advanced research in the arts.

Fast, Fun, Free Film Festival Panel

Not Exactly Dave Marr but Close...

6X6 is changing the program up in November -- instead of experiencing media work from around town, state, and globe, we'll be hanging out with with our friends in the other Athens film interest groups for a fast, fun, free film festival panel. "Meet the Festival Organizers: The Inside Scoop on Film Festivals and Film Festival Programming" will take place during the usual 6X6 scheduled time of 7:00 pm on Tuesday, November 1 at the Ciné lab.

We are delighted that we've been included in this entertaining and educational event, which represents an exciting new direction for 6X6, in which we will join co-presenters EcoFocus Film Festival, UGA Filmmaking Union, Film Athens, and Ciné. Not only will we hear from top-notch panelists such as Charles Judson from the award-winning Atlanta film festival, Harry Musselwhite, executive director of the Rome International Film Festival, and our own Sara Beresford, director and lead programmer of the EcoFocus Film Festival in Athens, we'll also be enjoying the chance to see our longtime pal Dave Marr (singer, film critic, Flagpole city editor, Ciné programming committee member, and raconteur) attempt to keep this highly qualified panel in line and help us get the inside scoop on how festivals work, from planning, to programming, to getting your work selected.

Oh yes, just when you thought it was safe to go back to your normal life without the challenge to submit to 6X6, we're back and more insistent than ever. But don't be fooled into thinking that submission is difficult or that you have to be in a state of completion to participate. In fact, the first event of the third 6X6 series is perfect for those of you that hunt, gather, mull, collage, rearrange, and play with stuff without ever really needing to stop. Tresor Trové: Lost and Found, Flotsom and Jetsam will take your original found materials or works that you have repurposed, reshaped, recombined, or derived from found materials, including photographs, film, video, sound, and live performance. Fragments are fine, especially sound and video. Submissions may be shown as stand-alone works or recombined with other submissions and live performance. The Way Things Go With 6X6: Special Collaborative Event with Athica

Things will be going our way at 6X6 next Wednesday, May 4 from 7-8 pm at Ciné Lab when we team up with Athica to show a program of videos selected in collaboration with their current exhibit "The Way Things Work," a colorful and spectacular exhibit about our cultural systems, which features large-scale installation, indoor and outdoor sculpture, drawings, videos and sound art by 11 national and international artists.

Co-curated by exhibit curator Didi Dunphy and 6X6 coordinator Lauren Fancher, the video program includes works by Robert Ladislas Derr, Julia Oldham, Eve Bailey, Christian Croft and Andrew Schneider, Celeste Fichter, Maud Haya-Baviera, Gareth Hudson, Plan b, and Katharine Tolladay.

Faithful followers of 6X6 will enjoy this departure from form: no longer will we be constrained by 6 pieces, 6 minutes, or 6 anything (unless we feel like it). Come be a part of it; as always, 6X6 is fast, fun, and free.

Escape to 6X6 Wednesday April 6th

Escape to the final episode of the second 6X6 series on Wednesday, April 6th at the Ciné Lab from 7-8 pm. Escape will feature a special 36+ (6X6) person worldwide collaborative video/image/sound/performance, "Escape from Destiny," including Athens' own musicians Dale Wechsler on violin and George Davidson on saxophone. A summation of the 6X6 raison d'etre, "Escape from Destiny" uses digital collaboration on a grand scale to create a fast, fun, free, real-time experience, engaging the audience as collaborators as the performance unfolds.

Each digital collaborator received a "blind" assignment, and will not discover the shape of the whole piece until it is performed live at the event. Other local contributors to "Escape from Destiny" include Jennifer Hartley, Mike Landers, Michael Lachowski, Lamar Wood, Mary Willoughby, Caroline Barratt, Christina Cotter, David Noah, Peter Fancher, Kate Schoenke, Ian Darken, Michael Meindl, Jeanne Ann Davidson, Christopher Childs, Ray Lee, and Gwenn Carter. They are united with contributors from Italy, England, the Netherlands, Ireland, New York, Florida, Arizona, Ohio, and Tennessee.

The program also includes five other video/sound/performance works in the theme of Escape, curated by Lauren Fancher, who is also the 6x6 Program Coordinator and the instigator of "Escape from Destiny."

About the Curator
Lauren Fancher has a background in studio art (BFA, UGA) and instructional technology (MEd, UGA), and currently has a focus on interactive design and digital media. She is active in the instructional technology, library, and digital arts communities as a writer, presenter, and artist, as well as serving as the coordinator of the 6X6 Media Arts Events series held at the Ciné Lab in Athens.

60 Minutes or Less: Participate in 6X6 Escape

One and all are needed to participate in a special collaborative work planned for the 6X6 Escape event on April 6, 2011, in which participants will receive an assignment to contribute exquisite corpse-style (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Exquisite_corpse) to the completed work. Complete the form to sign up and indicate which type of activity you'd prefer: photograph or other image, video, sound, or performance. You will receive an assignment that will take no more than one hour to complete, with the instructions on how to return your completed assignment by March 21. Your contribution will be incorporated into a collaborative piece coordinated by curator Lauren Fancher for performance at the April 6th event. Is That All There is to 6X6?

6X6 really left no stone unturned in its exploration of the theme Sentiment last Wednesday. Curator Matthew Buzzell brought together a diverse and thoughtful program of music, experimental sound and video, a touching short film, and the highlight of the evening, his friend the writer and poet Starkey Flythe, Jr., who read several poems with such southern emotion, wit and flair that he had the audience asking for more.

6X6 is oddly time sensitive when you think about it: six minutes, six works, 60 minutes. Curator Brian Hitselberger sorted through over 50 submissions, picking works from Leipzig, Germany; Oakland California; and Atlanta, Athens, and Newnan, Georgia. Hair ribbons, dancing, hand-drawn animation, stitchery, memories, and obsessive timing abound. A good time will be had by all, or at the very least, time will fly. He maintains a multi-disciplinary practice of painting, assemblage, printmaking, sculptural installation, and writing. His work has been exhibited regionally, nationally and internationally, and can be found in the permanent collections of the Elsewhere Collaborative, the Hargrett Library of the University of Georgia, and the print collections of the New York Public Library and Yale University. Last night curator Sabrina Cuadra helped the 6X6 audience relieve their pent up doldrums through a little discomfort therapy. With assistance from musicians/noise smiths Bryan Poole, Aaron Jollay, Stephen Cramer, Nate Mitchell, and Alice Serres, Cuadra encouraged the audience to scream when they "couldn't take it anymore." And scream they did.

There will be a lot to be relieved about once this 6X6 has its way with you: curator Sabrina Cuadra will help you have a cathartic meltdown this Wednesday, December 1 from 7-8pm at the Ciné Lab. Faster, funner, and freer than psychotherapy, Relief will feature works from Mexico, Spain, California, Texas, Romania, and little old Athens. Haircuts, soapsuds, deranged women -- when it's all over, nothing will ever bother you again. Or at least until the next 6X6.

About The Curator:
Sabrina Cuadra's work is a mixture of of performance art, sound art, and video art, influenced by her Argentine and Miami heritage. Under the moniker "Whistling School for Boys" she performs in rock show settings, combining light, color, found photos and footage with original music and audience participation, shining a light on the ordinary. She seeks to redefine artist-audience boundaries, shattering expectations that any audience might have. Since 2006, WSFB has had appearances at the New Art School's Rock vs. Art VII at the glorious underground pub Churchill's in Miami's Little Haiti, at Electronic SubSouth's first Women Of Electronic Music showcase in Gainesville, Florida, the Athens Popfest at Little Kings Shuffle Club, Flicker Theater & Bar, and ATHICA. WSFB has also projected videos during concerts by the Microphones, Everybody Everybody, 63 Crayons, Flash to Bang Time and Soul Spectacular dance parties in Athens. Her video collaboration with Connie Mae Oliver for Animal Collective's "Purple Bottle" has been viewed over 300,000 times on Youtube. Nobody leaves a WSFB performance without excitement and/or confusion.

We are relieved every time a 6X6 event avoids excessive regurgitation, and we do so by offering specific suggestions and/or unapproved medical advice. So, we think we might have a handle on some of those qualities surrounding relief, which is both something you can feel and something you can provide. 6X6 reaches out to the world and the world gives back; we have received submissions from every corner of the globe. This relieves Athens of the need to generate all of the art for 6X6, although in some ways we wish Athens would. In fact, perhaps you have been thinking: "I keep meaning to submit to 6X6." And since you haven't done so, you are feeling a little pang of something very much like lameness. The absolute best way to get relief for this uncomfortable feeling is to submit. We hope that each of you will express your thoughts on relief, and submit to the upcoming event, curated by Sabrina Cuadra, by November 21. The event will not relieve you of any money at all on Wednesday, December 1, from 7-8 pm at Ciné Lab.

About The Curator:
Sabrina Cuadra's work is a mixture of of performance art, sound art, and video art, influenced by her Argentine and Miami heritage. Under the moniker "Whistling School for Boys" she performs in rock show settings, combining light, color, found photos and footage with original music and audience participation, shining a light on the ordinary. She seeks to redefine artist-audience boundaries, shattering expectations that any audience might have. Since 2006, WSFB has had appearances at the New Art School's Rock vs. Art VII at the glorious underground pub Churchill's in Miami's Little Haiti, at Electronic SubSouth's first Women Of Electronic Music showcase in Gainesville, Florida, the Athens Popfest at Little Kings Shuffle Club, Flicker Theater & Bar, and ATHICA. WSFB has also projected videos during concerts by the Microphones, Everybody Everybody, 63 Crayons, Flash to Bang Time and Soul Spectacular dance parties in Athens. Her video collaboration with Connie Mae Oliver for Animal Collective's "Purple Bottle" has been viewed over 300,000 times on Youtube. Nobody leaves a WSFB performance without excitement and/or confusion.

A Tolerance for Milk Drinking

We looked at Consumption the other night with 6X6 curator Lindsey Klonoski and a willing crowd. Really, it is not a flattering picture. Jennie Thing's world is full of the wrappers, chewing, and whirling flotsam-ephemera of our cast-offs; Ash Sechler fetishized the esophageal blooms shaped by our swallowing mechanisms; Ted Kuhn pushed those mechanisms to the brink by drinking milk in excessive quantity, but he also shared it with the audience via the tiny glasses of a communion set; Paige Mostowy contemplated a set of personal visions of all or part; Jimmy DeRoth drew comparisons between sloth, weight, and fitness; and Tom Ketteringham engaged a young teen in a thoughtful dialogue that scared one witless. Why do birds suddenly appear every time trash is near? When we are consumed with an idea, are we still ourselves, or have we become that which is eating us? Eat like a bird and consume half your weight in art and ideas on Wednesday night, November 3rd, from 7-8 pm, when 6X6 Student Prize Winner Lindsey Klonoski scatters the bread on the waters at Ciné Lab with her selections, including works by 6X6 interns Paige Mostowy and Ted Kuhn, Jimmy DeRoth (Athens), Ash Sechler (New York by way of Athens), Tom Ketteringham (Bristol, England), and Jennie Thwing (Glassboro, NJ).

About The Curator: Lindsey Klonoski is a multimedia video artist in Athens, Georgia. Winner of the 6X6 UGA Student Prize earlier this year, she is in her fourth year of study at the University of Georgia earning a BFA in Digital Media. Klonoski grew up on Saint Simons Island, a small town on the easternmost coast of Georgia. Her art is driven by the nostalgia of this town, specifically the juxtaposition of its beauty and inviting appearance against the deeper layers of heartache, mystery, and mysticism that resonate in the rural south. Her work explores human nature and emotions, seeking to understand the disconnection between the two; simultaneously invoking lust and discomfort, confusion and enticement.

Consuming As Fast As We Can

Consumption is us, and the us-ness of us is getting to be a little overwhelming: big box stores, holiday junk, landfills of fast food containers and plastic toys. Still, we cherish the cast off remnants of our culture looping through YouTube and out into space. How is it that consumption is both the act of consuming and the act of being consumed? A Weakness for the Dice Games

Oh yes, it really was a fatal weakness that descended on 6X6 Wednesday night. But that was just the coordinator's tendency to over-engineer the proceedings. The audience had a fine time rolling the dice to determine which of the semi-finalist videos would get shown, allowing Chance to have its night all to itself. Once that ridiculousness was over, everyone settled down to watch the poetic, chaotic, and charming results.

What is at the intersection of random and chance? Is it the impersonal detachment of a godless universe? Or the improbable providence of a winning lottery ticket? Or maybe, for many of us, it's just the neat trick of remembering where we parked the car? Test your hypothesis Wednesday night, October 6th, when 6X6 returns to the Ciné Lab with a new batch of dicey propositions. Semi-finalists include works from Chicago, Canada, New York, Atlanta, Italy, Boston, and Australia. How random is that? Everything will get sorted out when the audience takes over.

The 6X6 Audience consists of seasoned professionals who understand the ins and outs of audience participation. They come, they buy beverages, they sit, they applaud, they volunteer, and they come back again. What a great group!
