Drakyn Upgrades Complete

This year I set aside the month of April to upgrade and implement changes to my work environment, processes and tools – both as a writer and a woodworker. Metaphorically, it was a time to sharpen the saw. In reality, there were days when the entire upgrade process seemed like a gigantic make-work project. The apparent light at the end of the tunnel was both dim and distant.

The changes are summarized on the Drakyn web site.

Drakyn Workshop Renovations

Like every job, the Drakyn workshop renovation has grown in scope and time to completion.

The four inch PVC specification for new ducting grew to five inch metal.

Outrageous shipping costs from Canadian suppliers forced the selection of several new US vendors, which had the nice side effect of opening up a wider selection of products to choose from. I like to "Shop Canadian", but there is a limit to how far I'm willing to let my pocketbook suffer. The dust collection upgrade to the shop is going to cost less and have significantly better specs than the original design.

Rather than push saws and other equipment around the shop, I elected to create a 3D model of the workspace and the tools using SketchUp.

New equipment and materials are still arriving and the shop is in chaos.

I can't find my pencil and my brain is too busy with CFM calculations to do any writing.

Drakyn Workshop Updates

I'm taking a few days to design and install a new four inch dust collection system for the Drakyn workshop. I have outgrown the old one. In retrospect, I don't believe the old system was at all adequate for anything other than cleaning up the mess after the job was done. It simply could not draw enough air from the larger, high velocity tools.

In preparation for the new system, I am going to take this opportunity to reorganize the shop and do some Spring cleaning. My wood storage system is completely out of hand and is taking over sections of the shop.

Phase I Complete

I have a backlog of articles to write, images to gather of past and current projects and let's not forget a novel to finish writing and numerous projects in the workshop to get out the door.

Phew!  I'm just getting started.

Drakyn Site Launches Today

The new Drakyn web site launches today at 6:00 p.m. EST.

It is a somewhat eclectic site which features discussions about fine woodworking, intricate wooden clocks, diabolical puzzle boxes, custom furniture and the process and challenges of writing a new novel. (I did say it was "eclectic".) These are the things that I'm passionate about.

Come visit www.drakyn.com to join the discussion and see the new Drakyn woodworking designs are they are unveiled.

New Drakyn Web Site Almost Ready

Only a few days until launch of the new web site at http://www.drakyn.com!

I have retired from the IT industry after nearly three decades and I'm really excited to be starting out on a new adventure.   Drakyn represents a personal Renaissance for me, growing in new directions in fine woodworking, design and writing.

New original designs are in progress for a unique line of fine wooden puzzle boxes and intricate wooden clocks.  The Drakyn workshop will also be accepting orders/commissions for custom furniture.

Drop by the new site and say Hi.
