My Writing Journey

Writing – Do Not Disturb/”Mama and Papa Blues” Music Video

(Graphic created on Canva by Dawn Pisturino)

Good morning!

I’m taking a summer blogging break so I can work exclusively on my memoir. I’ll be back in late August. Thank you for your patience and understanding. If you haven’t done so, please check out my books on Amazon. Your support is very much appreciated.

And check out my latest music video, “Mama and Papa Blues.” Years ago, in college, I took a music class that taught the basics of musical composition. One of our assignments was to compose a tune based on the blues scale. That was harder than it sounds because the blues have a special quality that has influenced jazz, soul, rock and roll, and country. I WROTE THE LYRICS. The music was generated on Suno. The visuals and audio were imagined and merged by me using A.I. generative software. Enjoy!

Thank you!

“A soulful blues song based on the legendary work of blues artists Little Walter and John Lee Hooker.”

2:08 minutes duration

[Verse]

Mama slung hash at Joe’s Soul Food Grub,

Washed her laundry in an old wooden tub,

Made love to Papa in the heat of the night,

Left for work in the cold morning light.

Papa worked the railroad. Gone all day.

Gone all week  Never went away.

His back was bent, and his knuckles gnarled.

Working the railroad was long and hard.

[Chorus]

The Lord took them both to heaven

In a slow, horse-drawn coach.

Laid them both to rest,

Beyond reproach.

The Lord took them both to heaven

To give them their reward.

The blues no longer keep them down.

Life is easy. No longer hard.

“Tonight Will Be The End” Heavy Metal Video

(Graphic created on Canva by Dawn Pisturino using the Suno image.)

Happy Sunday!

I challenged myself to write lyrics for a heavy metal song, ended up writing Christian metal lyrics, and generated the music on Suno. It took me about eight hours to put the video together using A.I. generative software. Sunday seemed like the best day to post it.

I WROTE THE LYRICS.

“A Christian heavy metal video based on the Book of Revelation.”

04:35 minutes duration

[Verse]

Staying one step ahead.

Demons in my head.

Running through stormy night,

Dark angels taking flight.

Wind howling in my ears,

Stirring up all my fears.

Hot prickles in my flesh,

Struggling to catch my breath.

[Chorus]

Run for your life, my friend.

Tonight will be the end.

God’s rules won’t break or bend

For anyone.

Run for your life, my friend.

Tonight will be the end.

God’s rules won’t break or bend

For anyone.

[Verse]

Hell opens at my feet,

Catching me in defeat.

Night terrors by the hour,

Demons have all the power.

No savior comes to call,

Letting me scream and fall.

Swallowed by flames I learn,

Sinners will always burn.

[Chorus]

Run for your life, my friend.

Tonight will be the end.

God’s rules won’t break or bend

For anyone.

Run for your life, my friend.

Tonight will be the end.

God’s rules won’t break or bend

For anyone.

[Bridge]

Damn all the cursed in hell.

Dead men will tell no tale.

Damn all the cursed in hell.

Dead men will tell no tale.

[Verse]

Dark angels laugh out loud,

Pleasing the hellish crowd.

Devils rip souls away,

Waiting another day.

Smothered by smoke and flame,

Lawlessness is to blame.

Rebels resisting God,

Punished for being proud.

[Chorus]

Run for your life, my friend.

Tonight will be the end.

God’s rules won’t break or bend

For anyone.

Run for your life, my friend.

Tonight will be the end.

God’s rules won’t break or bend

For anyone.

[Bridge]

Damn all the cursed in hell.

Dead men will tell no tale.

Damn all the cursed in hell.

Dead men will tell no tale.

[Verse]

Staying one step ahead.

Demons in my head.

Running through stormy night,

Dark angels taking flight.

“The Violin Waltz” Music Video

(Graphic created on Canva by Dawn Pisturino using the Suno image)

Good day, everyone!

Waltz tunes are particularly romantic, so I wrote the lyrics for a dreamy, romantic fantasy waltz.

I WROTE THE LYRICS. The music was generated on Suno. The music, visuals, and audio were imagined and merged by me using A.I. generative software.

“A dreamy, romantic ballroom fantasy with lyrics.”

1:35 minutes duration

[Verse]

Castles at dawn, shrouded with mist,

Ladies in gowns, courted and kissed.

Princes and kings, studded with rings,

Dancers still dance to violin strings.

[Chorus]

Whirling and swirling, twirling around,

Feet flying freely, not touching the ground.

Necklaces flashing in bright candlelight,

Young lovers dancing, extending the night.

[Verse]

Stars disappear and dark fades away.

The old sun appears, another new day

Lights up the sky with shiny new things,

But dancers still dance to violin strings.

For the fun of it, I submitted two of my song lyrics to the American Songwriter Lyrics Contest. I don’t expect anything.

I hope this video brought you peace and joy. Have a bright, productive, and prosperous day!

“Shakespeare Meets Star Trek” Video

(Graphic created on Canva by Dawn Pisturino.)

Good morning, fellow bloggers!

I thought it would be cool to interject a few lines from Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet into Star Trek. There’s an episode of the original Star Trek in which Uhura and Captain Kirk are forced by an alien entity to kiss. It’s not a pleasant episode, and Uhura is crying and freaking out. I decided to flip it around and make it an innocent, romantic kiss, a spur-of-the-moment impulse. Right away, my husband, who’s a die-hard Trekkie, accused me of “f**king up Star Trek.” He found the episode on YouTube and made me watch it. I started laughing and responded, “Yeah. I remember that episode.” Then, because my A.I. program gave Uhura a British accent and I agreed, since she was reciting Shakespeare, another die-hard Trekkie jumped all over me, saying, “Uhura is African, not British.” I responded that I’d spoken with several Africans with cultivated British accents.

The script was written by William Shakespeare and me. The visuals and audio were imagined and merged by me using A.I. generative software. Despite its perceived flaws, this has been one of my most popular videos. But feel free to criticize it! Thanks!

1:02 minutes duration

I’ve been concentrating mostly on my memoir this year, so I haven’t been submitting poems or short stories as in the past. When June rolled around, however, I began to realize that the holidays are coming up and I haven’t published anything on KDP this year. I decided to look into some simple projects I could complete quickly and publish on Amazon under my imprint, Horse Mesa Press. That’s how I decided on adult coloring books and children’s storybooks. It keeps my KDP account active. I feel like I’ve accomplished something. I might earn a few dollars (or cents). And I’m learning new skills, as I wrote about in my last post.

Cozy Hedgehog Mummy Sewing Days: A Cuddly Mummy Coloring Book for Adults & Kids (13+ age range)

Seti and Tut and the Lost Treasure Story and Activity Book (3-8 years age range) – Ebook and paperback

Cozy Christmas Treats: A Cuddly Bunny Coloring Book for Adults & Kids (13+ age range)

Sammy’s Sleigh Ride Story and Activity Book (3-6 years age range) – Ebook and paperback (the story was originally published on Spillwords Press)

I’m already working on a storybook for the 2-5 years age range to release in November. And, as I’ve already posted, I’m working on a writing journal for people with coping issues.

~

It’s hot and windy here. Everything looks brown and dry. From what I’ve read, climatologists believe Arizona is undergoing a period of permanent aridification. We worry constantly about wildfires and shrinking water supplies. Our monsoon storms usually begin in July, but I haven’t seen any evidence of any imminent storms. The hot, dry wind just shrivels everything up, so it’s been hard to grow things this year. And the free-range cattle were either sold, slaughtered, or shipped off elsewhere because we haven’t seen any since March.

Have a beautiful, peaceful Sunday!

“The Bluegrass of Kentucky” Music Video

(Graphic created on Canva by Dawn Pisturino using the Suno image.)

Good morning, Everybody!

I thought it would be fun to write lyrics for a bluegrass song. I did research on bluegrass music and what kind of lyrics it uses. I put a lot of thought into it because I wanted the lyrics to sound as authentic as possible without the music sounding too hillbilly twangy. I think Suno did a great job of generating the music for my lyrics.

My brother lived in Lexington, Kentucky, and is buried in a military cemetery down there. Whenever my parents visited him, they took my daughter along. My mom always took her into the bluegrass country to see the horses and the historic houses. I’ve been to Lexington and Covington, which is a really beautiful old town. Someone very dear to me is from Louisville. Kentucky is a beautiful state, and this is my musical tribute.

I WROTE THE LYRICS. The music was generated by Suno. The music, visuals, and audio in this video were imagined and merged by me using A.I. generative software.

“A lively bluegrass musical tribute to the state of Kentucky.
For my Kentucky Boy, D.P.”

2:01 minutes duration

[Verse]

Rolling hills in springtime, when grass turns blue,

Feel like paradise, even without you.

Folks here remember when you went away.

I could’ve followed but wanted to stay.

[Chorus]

Nothing heals my soul like the bluegrass of Kentucky!

The folks living here know they’re so darned lucky

To live in heaven’s gateway, ripe with morning dew

That turns the growing grass to a pale shade of blue.

[Verse]

The old barn is broken, an empty shell

That harbors secrets nobody would tell.

Folks say you went to Memphis, far away,

To work in the city and earn big pay.

[Chorus]

Nothing heals my soul like the bluegrass of Kentucky!

The folks living here know they’re so darned lucky

To live in heaven’s gateway, ripe with morning dew

That turns the growing grass to a pale shade of blue.

Over Fourth of July weekend, I made this video, completed my Cozy Hedgehog Mummy Coloring Book for Adults & Kids, and watched the fireworks set off by people across the valley. (My husband worked all weekend. My daughter, who has a part-time gig with Carnival Cruises, worked all weekend. We all worked in some capacity over the holiday.)

When I published my first six books, I just had to type everything into Atticus, and the Atticus application took care of the formatting and created all the files for MS Word, PDF, and the EPUB. But the app is not appropriate for coloring books and children’s storybooks. I taught myself how to format a Word document for an 8.5 x 8.5-inch coloring book or storybook, use A.I. to generate the illustrations, and upscale, enhance, and resize the images. I learned how to convert a PDF to an EPUB. I was going to cancel my Adobe Acrobat Pro subscription because I wasn’t using it much, but I’ve been using it like crazy lately. I haven’t perfected everything, but I’m getting there.

I hope everyone is having a great week!

Happy Birthday, America!

(Graphic created on Canva by Dawn Pisturino)

Happy 250th birthday, America!

In celebration of America’s Independence Day, I created this short birthday video (0:25 seconds) based on the first verse of America the Beautiful by Katherine Lee Bates.

Enjoy! Thank you!

(A.I.-generated video by Dawn Pisturino using videoexpress.ai and Clipchamp.)

Here are the complete lyrics.

by Katherine Lee Bates

O beautiful for spacious skies,
For amber waves of grain,
For purple mountain majesties
Above the fruited plain!
America! America!
God shed His grace on thee
And crown thy good with brotherhood
From sea to shining sea!

O beautiful for pilgrim feet,
Whose stern, impassioned stress
A thoroughfare for freedom beat
Across the wilderness!
America! America!
God mend thine every flaw,
Confirm thy soul in self-control,
Thy liberty in law!

O beautiful for heroes proved
In liberating strife,
Who more than self their country loved
And mercy more than life!
America! America!
May God thy gold refine,
Till all success be nobleness,
And every gain divine!

O beautiful for patriot dream
That sees beyond the years
Thine alabaster cities gleam
Undimmed by human tears!
America! America!
God shed His grace on thee
And crown thy good with brotherhood
From sea to shining sea!

Poetry Videos for Children

(Graphic created on Canva by Dawn Pisturino.)

Good morning, Everyone!

It’s impossible to love and share poetry without including children’s poetry. Mother Goose comes to mind. But many well-known poets also wrote a few verses for kids, including Robert Louis Stevenson, author of Treasure Island.

I found “Summer Fairies” in a vintage children’s anthology. Lewis S. Combes was only 8 years old when this poem was published in 1896. When I read it, I thought it would make a cute children’s video. Enjoy!

“Coffee and Tea” is a Mother Goose Nursery Rhyme. This video is my interpretation. I added an extra line at the end. Enjoy!

Both videos were imagined and merged (by me) using A.I. generative software. (I WROTE THE SCRIPTS.) Does the style look familiar? (Think Pixar.)

Completed Projects

A Cozy Christmas Treats Coloring Book for Adults & Kids will release in October. No text. The cover and coloring pages were generated using Gemini and ChatGPT.

Seti and Tut and the Lost Treasure Story and Activity Book (for children ages 3-8 years) will release in September. I created the characters and the story. I wrote and edited the text. The cover, images, and activities were generated using Gemini and ChatGPT.

My Works in Progress

My memoir about the time I spent in a cult – will try traditional publishing first (NO A.I. involved)

A mummy coloring book for adults & kids – target release September (No text. Cover and coloring pages generated using ChatGPT.

A writing journal for teens and adults with coping issues – October target release (?). NO A.I. involved. Public domain artwork.

On Friday, I will post a video for Fourth of July. I will post more music videos next week.

~

I’ve been pushing myself hard to get these projects done while I still have the creative energy.

I’m behind on visiting people’s blogs, but I’ll catch up.

Have a dreamy and magical day!

Welcome to My YouTube Channel

Hello!

I’ve had a YouTube channel for a while, but I only recently decided that it was time to upgrade my skills and use them. Social media has trained people to have shorter attention spans and to be more visual. Short, attention-getting videos are the trend. I WROTE THE SCRIPTS. The visuals and audio in both of these videos were imagined and merged (by me) using A.I. generative software. Thanks for visiting!

ADDED NOTE: Just to clarify – material that is A.I.-generated, such as images and audio, is not protected by copyright. However, my original lyrics and scripts ARE protected by copyright because they are MY original creations. Apparently, I will have to make this clear in every post.

“From My Last Years” by Walt Whitman

(Graphic created on Canva by Dawn Pisturino.)

Good morning, fellow bloggers!

Walt Whitman is one of America’s most beloved poets. In this short poetry video, I’ve tried to visually convey the poet’s belief that his last thoughts were seeds that would spread across America and grow. His most famous collection of poetry is Leaves of Grass.

0:29 seconds duration

From my last years, last thoughts I here bequeath,

Scatter’d and dropt, in seeds, and wafted to the West,

Through moisture of Ohio, prairie soil of Illinois– through Colorado,

California air,

For Time to germinate fully.

(1876)

Although he seems like an old curmudgeon from the Wild, Wild West, Walt Whitman was born on Long Island, New York, in 1819 and worked as a printer, newspaper editor, and school teacher. After he began pursuing a career as a poet and novelist, he published Leaves of Grass in 1855. During the Civil War, he nursed the wounded and dying in military hospitals. His famous poem, “O Captain! My Captain!” was dedicated to President Abraham Lincoln. Whitman died in 1892.

Don’t we all scatter seeds in the world’s garden that take root and grow? It’s impossible to live on this earth without leaving some kind of mark, even if it’s just an epitaph on a headstone.

~

My daughter picked up some part-time gigs for the summer, and one of them is doing ghost tours in an old cemetery. She has already seen a few things that can’t be explained. I’ve never been to a cemetery at night, and I’m going to visit her in October to take a tour. There’s always a lot of stuff going on in Galveston because it’s so historic and gets a lot of tourists. It should be fun.

Have a calm and productive day!
