Zuckerman's Famous Pig

This year we did a Charlotte's Web theme. We are ususally pretty last minute with Halloween costumes but this year I am very proud of myself for being prepared. I thought long and hard about a theme and order the costumes way in advance. I have been very anxious for Halloween to come. I did feel a little guilty about dressing Isaac head to toe in pink but I figured he was young enough that he wouldn't really care. And he was a really cute pig. Charlotte went as 'Charlotte' (the spider), Isaac is Wilber, Garrett is Zuckerman, and Sarah is Fern. Now I need to start thinking about next year. Who knew Halloween could be this much fun?

I luv Trunk-or-Treat. It has to be the most efficient way to collect candy, a plus with little kids.

Score!!! Let's PIG OUT!

August

Isaac leading the way. I luv it when they hold hands (even if it was your idea). Charlotte started nursery at church! Yay! No more going to class with Dad.Isaac is such a good big brother!

Garrett luv's to give Isaac the old man "cul-de-sac" haircut, even if it only last for a minute. Garrett insist that we take pictures each time. It is pretty funny. Next time we buzz his hair short I vote for the mohawk.

Isaac started pre-school and luv's it. On the first day he hugged me good-bye and went right in. He didn't even look back.

The Emerald City

Our Trip to Seattle

It all started on Mother’s Day. We had just arrived home from church, I was sitting at the kitchen table, Garrett was making me lunch, he sent Isaac over to give me a card. Inside the card was a series of questions to give me clues about my gift. He had to help me a little. Who knows the Chinese calendar, really? I was totally pumped, a kid less trip was just what the Dr. ordered. Departure May 29th.

Garrett was really bummed when the car rental guys told us that we could upgrade our reservation for a lower price. Ha! Ha! So we were stuck with a Dodge Charger. Sweet!

Immediately as we left the airport we were taken back by the tall trees and all the greenery; vines growing arbitrarily from the overpasses. We are acclimated to the dry climate of Colorado so this was a nice change of scenery. First stop, Pike Place Market. I never realized it until we were there but the market is built on the edge of a steep hill several levels up from the waterfront. Garrett was hesitant about the fish market as he has a strong aversion to fish and specifically the way it smells. I was surprised by the hustle and bustle of the market especially on a weekday. The streets were lined with vendors of every kind, produce, antique dealers, crafts, and restaurants. We did lots of window shopping picking up a few souvenirs here and there. Mmm, gotta love them Washington apples!

After a buyer makes their selection the fishmongers would yell out the order and toss up the fish to a guy behind the counter for packaging. Exhilarating to watch but Garrett wasn't ready to sample. We had lunch at the Bayside Cafe were I devoured the yummiest tuna fish sandwich. I'm sure whatever Garrett ate was good too.

The flowers were so fresh and fragrant. I wish I could have brought them home with me.

We walked the 10+ blocks from the market UP to the space needle. On the map it didn't look very far. Poor Garrett, his feet were still killing him from the running the Bolder Boulder just a few days earlier. We passed this cool outdoor art museum on the way there. My favorite structure was this silver tree behind us.

Do you like my hat? Okay, we're nerds.

The view from the top was breathtaking.
Mt. Rainer and Qwest Field home of the Seahawks. We were fortunate enough to have perfect weather while visiting, not one drop of rain and low 80's everyday. I guess people can live in Seattle for months without seeing Mt. Rainer. Lucky us, first day!

Garrett made the arrangements for the hotel my only request was to have a bathrobe. The Pan Pacific Hotel did not disappoint in anyway. You could even watch TV from the tub. I felt very spoiled. Great choice, Honey!

Most amazing dinner ever! I love to eat and anyone who knows me, knows that I'm not a pick-at-your-plate kind of girl. The fresh baked bread was amazing. Just before the main course the waiter asked if he could remove the bread, stating that it was pretty much "meaningless at this point" because the good stuff was yet to come. Wow, was he right. When he brought out our meal (fillet Mignon, creamed spinach, baked potato, & mashed potatoes) it looked delicious. Check out the size of the shrimp! I did convince Garrett to partake of one shrimp and he thoroughly enjoyed it! Crème Brulee was the perfect finale. Alright, maybe I am just a pig but I was on vacation, right? We did have leftovers of which Garrett gave to a homeless man sleeping in a doorway.

Saturday

We hit the road early to travel to Anacortes where we caught the ferry to the San Juan Islands. First time on a Ferry for us. Most interesting to experience different forms of mass transportation. There was a little league baseball team on the ferry headed to the island for a Saturday game. Just so out of my norm. I didn't bring a jacket. I checked the forecast and didn't want to be carrying a jacket when the day warmed up. Well, little did I know how much the cool ocean water puts a chill in the air. Thank you Garrett for talking me into purchasing a jacket at the ferry terminal. I wore it the entire day.
This is a shot of the open sea from the stern as we left Anacortes Ferry Terminal.

We went shopping and had lunch to kill some time before our whale watching tour. Which was a bust we saw a dozen sea lions, three porpoise fins, and two bald eagle. NO killer whales. And of course our boat docked just as the ferry was pushing out. I think the locals plan it that way. The next ferry wasn't for another 2 hours so that meant spending more money. We would have been a little upset but the island was a really fun place to hang.

San Juan island has a small town, New England kinda feel to it with prop airplanes, sail boats, and tall evergreens lining the bay. More great food and shopping. Our lunch was so good we decided to go back for dinner too. We ate at an outdoor grill set on a massive multi-level deck overlooking the bay. Perfect!
We had ice cream twice. Garrett’s idea but I went with it.
We didn't get back to Seattle until 11pm and downtown was hoppin'. When the weather is nice they must make they most of it because everyone was out.
Beautiful city skyline at night.

Sunday

We got a little lost searching for Café Campagne. To our credit the streets are a little crazy with lots of back alleys. The streets grids run parallel to the shoreline which is curved; I think we counted one intersection that had 9 streets crossing. The cafe had great reviews so we were determined to find it. The french toast just melted in my mouth and the fresh fruit was so juicy. Garrett's omelet, sausage, baguette, and potatoes were all so delectable that he had to rotate taking one bite at a time from each. We sure did some good eatin' on this trip!

Next stop on the agenda The Seattle Underground.

The Underground is a network of underground passageways that was originally at ground level during the 1850's. When 25 city blocks burned to the ground in 1889. The city saw this as an opportunity to correct the problem of daily flooding during high tide. So they decided to regrade the streets at a higher elevation. The shop owners couldn't wait 5 to 10 years for the land to be back filled so they built the new building with two entrances one on the first story and another on the second story. For the regrade, the streets were lined with concrete walls that formed narrow alleyways between the walls and the buildings. At first pedestrians climbed ladders to go between street levels. I think they said that there were 13 people died falling from the ladders so they built archways for people to cross. Crazy who thinks of this stuff.

The underground alleyways were used by merchants and pedestrian even after the regrade was completed so they put in skylights. These skylights can be seen from in the sidewalks above ground. Sorry to bore you with the history lesson but Garrett and I found this fascinating. Plus we had a hilarious tour guide who made us laugh non-stop.

This shot is blurry but I think it gives you a good idea of what it was like down there.

And of course, we had to visit The original Starbucks at Pike's Place. Seriously every time you turn around in Seattle there's another Starbucks, no joke. The line was too long at the original so we went across the street to get our carmel apple ciders.

Home sweet home. One last shot of Mt. Rainier.

As Promised- The Hizzie, then & now

We are pretty happy with the work that we've done to our home- although some things could still use more attention. As mentioned before we lost our 'before' pictures along the way. We're on our 4th computer since we've moved in, so needless to say construction wasn't too good for our tech stuff and transfering all our files from one unit to the next, something inherently goes missing. About 8 months ago we actually moved in (stuff out of boxes and now comfortable), and to our suprise, we found the 'before' pics- that was a good day! So, while we'd like to show progress pics, we gave up on picture taking when we realized the pics were gone. So instead, all you get are very contrasted BEFORE & AFTER's. Enjoy.

BEFORE: This is our living room the day we moved in. The carpet was pulled up before we took possession, but what you don’t see still stuck to the wood floor are the tack strips and staples where they connected the carpet at the carpet seams, hmmm. Notice the closet door and the half wall.
AFTER: We like it better this way. The walls are texured now, the floors sanded and re-finished, new base & crown, warmer color, the front closet now serves as a bedroom closet on the other side of the wall and the railing/banister opens the space up. Same ceiling fan- crazy, huh?

BEFORE: This basement was classified as 'finished' on the MLS! Tack strip everywhere, a hideous - uh, 'closet' at the bottom of the stairs (hidden), outlets at 4', and some vintage 70's 'decorative' milwork. The existing paint job left something to be desired.

AFTER: This was taken from a different angle, but you can see we made the most of the old arches. It took us forever to figure out what to do with this space. Can't see it here, but we eliminated the 'closet' and opened up the wall to the stairs. Added wainscot details and some accent lighting. Sarah hates this pic because it shows Garrett's lame excuse for a coffee table- but we're happy to report that it has since been broken (Isaac fell through it- somehow unharmed and we'll save that story for another post) and a new one is on the shopping list.

BEFORE: Ok, the kitchen. What do you do with this layout? This was one of our first projects because we litterally had to eat! That dark thing is an appliance, called a sink [a totally mobile, metal unit]- yep it was totally bought at Montgomery Ward (if you don't know what that is, ask your parents). It sucked using it even temporarily because it had no garbage disposal. We figured a different layout was in order. We had a stainless steel fridge delivered the next day- it was SO out of place! But we worked around her, got her some friends and made it just a bit nicer.

AFTER: We aren't too impressed with the 'build-a-bear' cabinets, but they sure are easy on the eyes. Don't be fooled, the kitchen only looked this clean from this angle. All the counter 'junk' is hidden behind the fridge! This new layout give the kitchen way more flexibility and size as well as provide the adjacent bedroom with a larger closet- I love a good win/win. Sarah demanded that she get credit for the idea to go with the U-shaped layout!

Easter Bunny

Our Easter was filled with all of the usual traditions, fun filled baskets on Easter morning, dying eggs, egg hunt, and new clothes for church.
Isaac and Charlotte are opposite when it comes to sweets. Charlotte couldn't get enough candy and Isaac could careless. Although he did enjoy hunting for the eggs.
Who's nap time is it?

Our Big Little Girl

Charlotte turned 1 on February 8th.

MMM. I've been waiting for this.

This girl has one sweet tooth! No messing around with her she knew exactly what to do and dove right in to devouring her cake.

Only The Brave

Three years ago we started out on the adventure of sweat equity. I guess that's what happens when you watch far too much HGTV and start to think we could do that. We thought our before pictures had been lost but stumbled across them last month. We ourselves had forgotten how scary the house was originally and now feel quite brave that we dared to live in such a thing.
