Bad Education – written by and starring Jack Whitehall – follows Alfie Wickers, the worst teacher ever to (dis)grace the British Education system.
SERIES ONE Abbey Grove School is populated by some of the weirdest teachers ever: Fraser (Mathew Horne) the hair-brained Headmaster, Miss Gulliver (Sarah Solemani) the biology teacher with a heart of gold, and Deputy Headmistress Miss Pickwell (Michelle Gomez), who displays all the charm and sensitivity of a Third Reich dominatrix. Alfie’s class have been written off by the rest of the school - but Alfie’s determined to take them under his wing. From disastrous parents’ evenings to cringe-worthy sex-education lessons, from life-threatening self-defence classes to school elections full of dirty tricks... Bad Education is school life as you’ve never seen it before.
SERIES TWO Alfie Wickers (Jack Whitehall) returns as the self-styled maverick of Abbey Grove, attempting to teach his class something - anything - that requires zero effort. The staff room politics are tricky: Miss Gulliver (Sarah Solemani) is now seeing one of their female ex-students, Miss Pickwell (Michelle Gomez) is giving President Putin a run for his money and Fraser (Mathew Horne) mistakenly gives all of the school’s funds to ‘The Nigerian Minister of Finance’. This term sees a furiously fought swimming gala, a drugs awareness day that ends in Alfie’s utter humiliation and Fraser staging Abbey Grove’s own Take Me Out.
SERIES THREE Exams are looming so it’s time for Alfie to actually start teaching his class, but the path to A*s never did run smooth. Adding to Alfie’s stress levels is the appointment of his dad, Martin Wickers (Harry Enfield) as the new deputy head and his increasingly disastrous love with his girlfriend, Miss Gulliver (Sarah Solemani). Fraser (Mathew Horne) starts the summer term with a strike on his hands after badly investing the school’s money. Thrown into the mix is an evening of after school clubs, a competitive sports day, Alfie and his class sitting a Biology exam and the end of term Prom.

Bad Education was probably the best BBC3 comedy (excluding Him and Her in joint first) ever made.
If you've not seen it, then buy this box set. If you've seen the movie and liked it, then this box set will blow your mind - as the film was no where near as funny as the series.

We'd only managed a few episodes on TV & wanted to see the whole series. Gets a bit too unrealistic in the 3rd series, could be good without going so far.

Unfortunately, streaming is quickly killing disc technology. It is unlikely this series will make it to region 1 or A for distribution since few Americans watch the BBC. You either need a region 2 player or workaround or try to find it on a British streaming service.
The series follows a British Secondary School class as it is finishing up their version of high school. All of the actors are convincing as being young and going through the trials of adolescence. Jack Whitehall plays the perfect incompetent teacher who works harder at fitting into and befriending the class than educating it.

„Bad Education“ von Jack Whitehall ist eine in Deutschland zu Unrecht wenig bekannte englische Comedy Serie. Wer auf britischen Humor gepaart mit Schimpfwörtern der „unteren“ Schublade steht und nicht gleich verschämt in die Ecke geht wenn verschiedenste englische Slang Bezeichnungen für das weibliche oder männliche Genital fallen, der ist hier richtig. Das alles gemischt mit Schülerstreichen und typisch englischen Nazi Witzeleien, in denen die schwarzgekleidete Direktorin Prickwell als „SS Officer“ bezeichnet wird, oder Seancen im Klassenraum abgehalten werden bei denen Kontakt mit Hitler aufgenommen werden soll.
Die Handlung dreht sich um den unbeholfenen, überforderten Lehrer Alfie Wickers, der ganz das Gegenteil zu seiner professionellen Kollegin und Möchtegern Freundin Rosie ist. Seine Schüler haben ihn durchaus gern, machen sich aber auch über ihn lustig und nehmen ihn nicht immer ernst. In diesem Personenumfeld bewegt sich die Handlung, die zwischen bissigem Humor, aus dem Ruder laufenden Situationen und -manchmal- flachem Klamauk changiert.
Die 18 Folgen haben Höhen und Tiefen, die weniger guten Folgen kann man verkraften. Highlights aus meiner Sicht:
Die erste Staffel, darin "Sex Education" und „Politics“ .
Die 2. Staffel ist durchwachsen, das Christmas Special ist ein Highlight.
Die 3. Staffel hat Höhen und Tiefen, die finale Folge "Prom'" ist ein versöhnlicher Abschluss aller Staffeln.
Hier und da finden sich in der Serie kleine Highlights, wie z.B. ein „Mumford & Sons Tribute“, gemischt mit einer „Slipknot" Persiflage, zusammengeführt zu „KnotSlip&Sons“.
Das alles mag gar nicht so sensationell klingen, ist es auch nicht(!), der Charme der Serie liegt im Cast: der Klassenkasper Mitchell, die strebsame Chinesin Jing, eine lüsterne Schülerin Chantelle (sehenswert!), der Obermobber Grayson, der offen schwule Stephen, der dickliche Joe, ein absurden Wortspielen verhafteter Direktor Fraser und und und… Alles absichtlich(!) stereotyp gezeichnete Figuren, die liebenswert auf ihre Art sind. Insbesondere „Mitchell“ und „Grayson“ sind durchgehend brilliant gespielt.
Ich will nicht Zuviel verraten, aber nach 18 Folgen enden alle Staffeln mit einer finalen ‚Prom Night‘, und die Klasse geht auseinander. Wer nicht sentimental wird, weil er diesen Schülerfiguren nie mehr begegnen wird, die im letzten Moment ihrem Lehrer ihre Zuneigung gestehen, hat kein Herz.
Insgesamt gebe ich 5 Sterne, nicht wg. des Scripts, sondern wg. des Casts.
Und zum Preis: 50 Euro Neupreis ist das DVD Set nicht wert, es gibt kaum gutes Bonusmaterial oder sonstiges. Wer die Box gebraucht bekommen kann, sollte zuschlagen. Mehr als 20 Euro würde ich nicht bezahlen.
PS:
(I) Es gibt noch einen Film ‚Bad Education – The Movie‘. Dieser Film ist bei weitem nicht so gut, er mindert den Eindruck von Bad Education. Man kann den Film durchaus schauen, aber er ist nicht wirklich gut, neben ein paar witzigen Momenten. Wer die Serie liebt, wird vom Film enttäuscht, zumal er von der Continuity gar nicht in den Serienablauf passt, außerhalb des gewohnten Settings spielt, viele unnötige Figuren einbringt, die den Charme der Serie einfach nicht widerspiegeln. Finger weg vom Film, er wirkt im ganzen eher wie ein Fremdkörper.
(II) Die Serie kann man nur mit Untertiteln schauen, denn auch für geübte Englischsprecher ist es teils schwierig, Akzent/Slang oder schnell gesprochenen Dialogen zu folgen, und man muss das ‚Urban Dictionary‘ zu Rate ziehen, um ein paar Witzeleien zu verstehen. Das hält sich aber in Grenzen, und mindert den Sehgenuss überhaupt nicht.

I found this show on netflix, and had to order the complete series and the movie. I live in the US, so I had to convert the discs to play on my pc/tv... but worth it.
If I had to compare this show to anything, it would be a blend of Community with the IT Crowd. Hilarious, with absolutely perfect casting.
If you're in the mood for a laugh, dont hesitate and just buy this now.
